Apple Participates In Smartphone Anti-Theft Voluntary Program

Apple Participates In Smartphone Anti Theft Voluntary ProgramSmartphone theft is on the rise and lawmakers are doing whatever they can to help discourage thieves from stealing more smartphones. This has resulted in certain lawmakers pushing for carrier and smartphone manufacturers to equip their phones with kill switches, thus ultimately rendering the phone useless if a theft were to occur, which in turn would hopefully discourage thieves.

While we’ve yet to see the widespread adoption of the kill switch (it has been proposed in the state of California), Apple has recently decided to throw its name behind a new initiative along with a handful of other Android OEMs that basically see smartphones manufactured after 2015 include a series of anti-theft features. iTunes Radio UK Release Possible Soon

iTunes Radio UK Release Possible Soon

Late last year Apple released iTunes Radio, its first free ad-support music streaming service. iTunes Radio is only available in select markets right now, Apple has been taking its time in expanding it outside the U.S. Recent reports indicate that Latin America might be the next destination for this service. Before that happens, it is likely that iTunes Radio UK release will take place first.

It was reported back in October last year that iTunes Radio will be launched in the UK come “early 2014.” The first few months of 2014 have already passed and so far the service hasn’t gone live across the pond. A new report reveals that Paul Wright, Apple’s director of iAd based in London, is meeting with media marketing agencies in the country to discuss advertising on iTunes Radio.

Getting advertisers on board the iAd platform for iTunes Radio hints at a possible launch in the near future. Another major indicator of the impending launch is the fact that users have seen iTunes Radio appear sporadically on their devices in the UK. Since iTunes Radio heavily depends upon ad revenue to keep the music playing, it makes sense for Apple to secure ad dollars prior to launching the service. Apple has not commented on this report, so an exact launch date is not yet known.

Pioneer Aftermarket Receivers To Get CarPlay Support

Pioneer Aftermarket Receivers To Get CarPlay Support

With iOS 7.1, Apple made its way into our cars. The firmware activated a feature called CarPlay, which is essentially an iPhone powered dashboard for the car. It can be used for a variety of vital tasks such as phone calls, messaging, mapping and even playing music. Several big name auto manufacturers have already committed to support CarPlay in their new vehicles. Though that doesn’t mean anyone who wants to use CarPlay will have to purchase a new car. Aftermarket receivers will get support too, and Pioneer is going to be one of the first to update its receivers.

Through a software update, five of Pioneer’s existing units will get CarPlay support. The update will be released this summer. Pioneer’s receivers capable of supporting CarPlay are from its 2014 NEX series can cost between $700 to $1400. Other manufacturers like Alpine are also working on aftermarket receivers for this feature, so customers will be spoilt for choice.

Apple has also confirmed that Pioneer is going to sell aftermarket receivers with CarPlay support. Some might find this unusual because Apple is a company that rarely lets anyone handle the hardware for its software, but as competition mounts, the company just might be looking to beat others to the punche.

Alpine to Bring Apple CarPlay to the Aftermarket this Fall

Alpine has been making car stereos for the aftermarket for a number of years. The company has now announced that it will be bringing a new console unit to market later this fall that will allow you to add Apple CarPlay to your car. CarPlay will be offered as a factory option in some cars from major makers like Ford, GM, Honda, and others, so it’s good news that there will be an aftermarket option as well.

CarPlay lets iPhone users plug their smartphone into the car and then see content and controls on the car’s own screen. The idea is that it will be easier to see things like nav apps on the larger screen and drivers won’t need to take their eyes off the road, along with car-specific experiences for navigation, phone calls, messages, and music. The system also offers full Siri voice integration for voice control.

There is no word on what tech the Alpine CarPlay console will have. Presumably, it will feature more than just CarPlay integration with a normal radio and CD player, but that is unconfirmed. The Alpine unit is expected to cost $500 to $700 without installation.
