Yahoo makes major cuts in services as Mobile ramps up

This afternoon the folks at Yahoo have announced their intent to end services with Yahoo Deals, Yahoo SMS Alerts, Yahoo Kids, and the feature phone versions of Yahoo Mail and Messenger. While the smartphone versions of both Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Mail will (of course) continue to roll forward, both the feature phone versions and legacy smartphone versions of these apps “will be going away”, as Yahoo reports. This is all part of Yahoo’s move into the mobile universe they’ve been vocal about this week more than once.

This set of updates includes an April 30th shutdown date for several of the services listed. If you’re using Yahoo’s “Upcoming” service, you’re out on the 30th – the same goes for Yahoo Deals and Yahoo SMS Alerts. Those amongst you that’ve been making use of Yahoo Kids will be kicked as of April 30th, and users under 13 hoping to continue using Yahoo services will beed to do so with Yahoo’s Family Accounts program.

If you’d like to gain access to Yahoo’s Family Account’s program, you have only to head down to the Yahoo Family Accounts Program webspace where you’ll learn more about all sorts of family-friendly services including Yahoo Movies – which will NOT be shutting down, incidentally.

With the launch of the newest iterations – and major changes – to Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Weather shown off this week, the company is cutting out the dead weight. Feature phone (J2ME) devices will no longer have support from Yahoo – time to join the future! Yahoo Mail apps for iOS, Android, and Windows 8 as well as Yahoo Messenger apps for iOS as well as Android will be updated through the future – grab on tight!

Yahoo interview tips future with full mobile engagement

This morning Yahoo heads Marco Wirasinghe and Lee Parry spoke in an interview about the future of the company – specifically on how they’ll be making a major push for mobile device engagement starting immediately. Wirasinghe works with Yahoo as their mobile and emerging products director while Parry is senior director. Both made it clear today: Yahoo is headed to a place full of high-level engagement for mobile users, apps first.

If you have a peek at Yahoo’s release this week of Weather and Mail mobile apps, you’ll find their overall aesthetic to have been completely electrified. While Yahoo hasn’t struck the graphic design world as a place where the greats go o strut their stuff, this weeks’ releases have proven the company to be having a rebirth of sorts. In their chat with VentureBeat, Parry and Wirasinghe have outlined how Yahoo will move forward.

“You’re gonna see us do a lot more things that are visual, rich, and have engagement that’s absolutely delightful.” – Wirasinghe

Speaking specifically on the way Yahoo will be handling mobile design, Wirasinghe let it be known that they’ll be continuing down the trail they’ve begun forging with their releases this week.

“[Mobile] is an evolving exercise for us. When it comes to design, we have to look at the medium, the device. We have the content, which varies from each daily habit, and we have to think about the user experience behind all of it. … It really comes down to taking full advantage of the really great screens.” – Wirasinghe

Finally it was Parry that added the Easter Egg that will be striking a thousand fires this week. He mentioned not just Google Glass, but Apple’s supposed wrist-based computer as well. While this quote is by no means confirmation that Apple is making said watch, Yahoo’s willingness to work with both companies in the near future is encouraging!

“It would be crazy not to be looking at Google Glass or Apple’s watch.” – Parry

Have a peek at our Yahoo tag portal for more information on the ever-changing world of the search giant and competitor to the likes of Google. We’ll be watching Yahoo’s involvement in the mobile landscape with great intent!

Nokia Sweden Might Have Accidentally Confirmed Instagram For Windows Phone

Nokia Sweden Might Have Accidentally Confirmed Instagram For Windows PhoneOne of the apps that Windows phone owners are lacking on their devices would be Instagram. While there are Instagram alternatives for Windows Phone, unfortunately they aren’t as popular, especially if your goal is to follow celebrities or friends with Instagram accounts on your phone. Will there be an Instagram released for Windows Phone? Well as it turns out, it seems that Nokia’s official Facebook page in Sweden might have accidentally let the cat out of the bag, claiming that Instagram is on the way but no date is available. The comment has since been deleted, and while it might be said in error, a tweet back in March also by Nokia Sweden has suggested that the app is in development. Take what you will from this, for all we know Nokia’s customer rep has the wrong info, hence the deleted comment, or they might have spoken out of line which led to the comment being deleted. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information, so stay tuned for updates.

DNP Google's One Today app for Android lets you donate $1 to select nonprofit organizations

Google may be raking in the dough, but that doesn’t mean the company is lacking a social conscience. Yesterday, the software giant silently released its One Today app for Android. Available in the US by invite only, the setup features a daily profile on a different nonprofit project and gives you the option to donate $1 to its cause. Payments require a Google Wallet account and gifting is currently limited to a buck per day. If you’re looking to raise more capital for a specific cause, you can challenge friends via social networks to donate and then match their donations (up to a point). After all, this is about bringing networks of people together to bolster the spirit of giving. Check out the adjacent source link to apply for an app invite.
