YouTube launches remote control support on new LG, Sony, and Panasonic TVs

While Google already announced support for pushing YouTube video straight to Google TV devices, the company is now announcing support for the same function on new Smart TVs from LG, Sony, and Panasonic. Owners of Smart TVs from these brands can now use the YouTube smartphone app as a remote control of sorts.

At CES 2013 next week, YouTube will be showing off mobile pairing with a number of new devices from manufacturers like Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic, and Sony. The online streaming video service also expects to have the same feature rolling out on other devices throughout the year, from manufacturers such as Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, and Western Digital.

This feature gives users instant access to videos and channels from the mobile app directly on their TV. They’ll be able to instantly watch videos they’ve found on their mobile devices, or queue them up to be watched as a playlist. The feature also allows multiple different users on the same network to add to a communal playlist, rather than just relying on one device for control.

We can only imagine this feature picking up more steam as it releases on more and more devices. The ability to queue up YouTube videos on your smartphone, and then push them to your television is something to be desired. Plus, watching YouTube videos is a group affair anyway, and it’s best experienced on the TV in the living room.

Drift launches iOS app for HD Ghost Action camera

While it might seem like Contour and GoPro have a hold on the action sports camcorder industry, they’re not the only ones making an impact. We already talked about a company called Drift, which makes the HD Ghost Action camcorder. Today, the company announced a mobile app for remote controlling the camera from afar.

drift-app

The app pairs with the Drift Datalink system found in the Drift HD Ghost action camera, and it provides remote control capabilities, allowing users to use their mobile device to set up camera angles, stream video playback, and share content instantly on different social media platforms.

The HD Ghost camera can communicate with mobile devices to a distance of up to 295 feet (90m) using its built-in WiFi network. When the app is paired to the camera’s Drift Datalink system, users have the ability to control their Drift HD Ghost remotely and set up and different types of shots within the view screen.

Users can also monitor the camera’s battery life, and the app filters content by media type for playback in the gallery, which makes it easy to find the videos you want to watch and share. The app is currently only available for iOS devices, with Android compatibility coming soon.

Development Of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition For Android Hits A Snag

04 Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition Development Of Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition For Android Hits A SnagWhile iOS gamers are probably enjoying the remake of Baldur’s Gate, it looks like Android users will still have to wait for their copy. According to a Twitter post by Beamdog’s Trent Oster, he revealed that they have hit a snag in the Android development of the game, stating that “We’ve hit a snag with BG resource handling and ship panel APK files. We’re going to be a while yet on Android.” Unfortunately when asked as to when Android users would be able to expect the game, no specific date was given meaning that Android users are in for wait, although hopefully not for too long (fingers crossed!) In the meantime it looks like if you’ve already completed Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition and you’re looking forward to the sequel, Oster revealed that the team is already working on it but unfortunately did not provide a time frame for its release. We can only assume that Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition will likely release for iOS first while Beamdog works on porting the first title to Android. It should also be noted that Beamdog has considered bringing the Enhanced Edition of Baldur’s Gate onto the PlayStation 3 console.

US Judge Throws Out “Appstore” False Advertising Claims By Apple

amazon appstore US Judge Throws Out Appstore False Advertising Claims By AppleSome of you guys might have remember that a couple of years ago, Apple and Amazon went to court over the “Appstore” name, with Apple claiming that the “App Store” was their trademark and that Amazon truncating it to “Appstore” was not good enough. Amazon then asked the courts to throw out the lawsuit against them and it looks like Amazon has finally gotten their wish, or at least a part of it. A US judge has ruled that Amazon’s use of the Appstore name is not false advertising which Apple claimed it was. It should be noted that this does not mean that the entire lawsuit is over and done with, but the allegations against false advertising is now out the window, although Amazon will still have to contend with Apple’s claims that the “Appstore” name is a trademark infringement.

According to Judge Hamilton (via Wall Street Journal), “Apple contends that because its App Store offers so many more apps than Amazon’s Appstore, consumers will be misled into thinking that Amazon’s Appstore will offer just as many […] There is no evidence that a consumer who accesses the Amazon Appstore would expect that it would be identical to the Apple App Store.”

Microsoft Accuses Google Executives Of Intentionally Not Creating Native YouTube App For Windows Phone

youtube1 Microsoft Accuses Google Executives Of Intentionally Not Creating Native YouTube App For Windows PhoneBefore Windows Phone started making a splash, the smartphone platform wars was mostly between Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, although in all fairness Google did roll out several official iOS apps that were pretty good, such as the recent Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and etc. However it looks like the war between Android and Windows Phone is starting to heat up and according to a recent accusation by Microsoft, they claim that Google executives forced YouTube to not create an app for the Windows Phone platform, thus making the YouTube experience on Windows Phone devices less than stellar.

Microsoft is also claiming that Google has prevented them from creating their own YouTube app that would offer the same features that iOS and Android users are enjoying, although it should be noted that this is not a new allegation, but it is now supposedly backed up by evidence which Microsoft claims was garnered from YouTube employees. This incident with YouTube is an add-on to the series of problems that Microsoft is having with Google, such as Google’s decision to end support for Exchange ActiveSync, and the announcement by Google that they had no plans for native apps for the Windows Phone platform which led to Windows Phone users petitioning Google for it.

Hackulous closure prompts rise of portals that allow bootleg iOS apps without a jailbreak

Hackulous closure prompts rise of portals that allow bootleg iOS apps without a jailbreak

The somewhat unexpected shutdown of Hackulous’ community, and the corresponding departure of related tools like Apptrackr and Installous, left iOS app pirates in something of a panic: many of those who jailbroke their devices expressly for ill-gotten goods suddenly lost one of their main sources. While they haven’t earned much sympathy, they’ve also triggered a surge in services that don’t require a jailbreak at all. Months-old pay service Zeusmos has seen a spike in popularity, but more recent upstart Kuaiyong is drawing the most attention. It’s offering others’ commercial releases through the web, for free — and on a scale into the thousands of bootleg installs per app, suggesting that it may be abusing enterprise policies rather than Zeusmos’ apparent reliance on developer slots.

There’s no immediate sign of a crackdown, but those app writers concerned about their revenue might take consolation in knowing that the risks might outweigh the rewards. iTunes syncing breaks the moment a pirated app reaches a device, and there’s no guarantee that every copy will be malware-free. Zeusmos also claims to be clamping down on questionable sources in an attempt to steer users towards homebrew apps. Even with those disclaimers, it’s still possible that Hackulous’ end may have created more problems for some developers than it solved.

Installous is dead, it’s not just you

Just a couple days ago, we received the news that that popular pirate app store for iOS, Installous, shut down along with the entire Hackulous team. Hackulous is regarded as one of the biggest names in the iOS jailbreak community, so seeing their doors close is certainly a huge victory for anti-piracy advocates, but that hasn’t stopped from other iOS piracy sources from taking Installous’ place.

Installous

No one knows why the immensely-popular pirate app store shut down without warning, but Hackulous claims that “stagnant” forums and the difficulty in moderating them eventually led to the team quietly shutting it all down. However, we have to assume that there were other factors involved in the shutdown, since we have a hard time believing that the forums for such a popular service were “stagnant” by any means. If anything, the forums could’ve been booming, and moderators had a hard time keeping up with duties.

installous

Unfortunately, for those who currently have Installous installed on their jailbroken iOS device will no longer be able to access the app at all — it immediately prompts you with a “Installous will now terminate” message, and simply goes back to the iOS home screen, deeming the app completely useless. It’s even been removed in the Cydia store, where it will still show up in search results, but will fail to install

SlashGear isn’t responsible for users jailbreaking their devices, and you do so at your own risk.

Jailbreakers will no doubt miss Hackulous, and the team’s one-stop shop for “cracked” or pirated apps and games on iOS was one of the main reasons that users jailbroke their iOS devices in the first place, but it looks like users will have to pony up that $0.99 for an app or game they would’ve gotten for free otherwise. Or they can resort to other sources, like Zuesmos and Kuaiyong, both of which don’t even require jailbreaking in the first place. But we’re guessing that it’ll be a long time before we see another pirate app store show up that will impact the iOS jailbreak community the way that Installous did.

Holiday Week 2012 Sees New iOS And Android Device Activations Rise To 50M Total, A 150% Increase

Flurry_appDownloads_Christmas_toNewYears2012-resized-600

App analytics platform Flurry has released its annual look at how many new mobile devices came online during the holiday season, and the results show a dramatic change from the situation a year ago. Over 50 million iOS and Android devices were activated during the period between December 25 to December 31, versus just over 20 million devices last year. Users of those and existing devices downloaded 1.76 million apps, a 47 percent increase over the 1.2 billion app downloads during the 2011 holiday week.

Flurry previously reported that 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas day alone, an increase which likewise shattered previous records. The analytics firm also looked at the breakdown by country of downloads over the week, and found that as per usual, the U.S. accounted for the vast majority of downloads during the holiday period. China and the U.K. followed up in second and third place, and increases versus baseline download rates were more significant in countries including Canada, Germany and France where Christmas is more commonly celebrated than in some other high-performing nations like China and South Korea.

While Flurry doesn’t break out iOS vs. Android activation numbers, some analysis by Fortune combined with information from Android chief Andy Rubin suggests Apple may have accounted for more than half of the new activations this year, with the advantage coming from sales of its iPad and iPad mini tablet devices.

New services lets users install pirated iOS apps without jailbreaking

Apple most likely sighed a huge sigh of relief when they found out that Installous, the popular jailbroken pirating app for iOS, shut down a couple days ago. However, it looks like there’s another threat to replace Installous. A new hack allows users to bypass Apple DRM and install pirated apps without the need to jailbreak.

App-Store

Zeusmos and Kuaiyong are two alternatives to Installous, and both have been gaining significance since the exit of Installous. The former has been around for a few months now, while the latter has appeared almost from nowhere over the past couple of weeks. Both of these services offer simple, one-tap installs of pirated apps and don’t require that devices be jailbroken.

Obviously, this opens up the arena for more even more users to install cracked ups, instead of just the relatively small fraction of users with jailbroken devices, and it’s now easier than ever to pirate iOS apps. While Zeusmos is available for free on jailbroken devices, it charges a fee for non-jailbroken users. However, the creator of Zeusmos says that the service is intended to solely code sign applications, and he doesn’t encourage any form of piracy — it’s merely a way to “try before you buy”.

The Chinese service Kuaiyong also offers a similar service: allowing you to install apps for free from your device without paying for them. It seems the service offers enterprise-licensed apps, which allow them to be installed on multiple devices. Both Kuaiyong and Zeusmos are terribly easy to use, and it makes pirating apps that much easier. And while these services aren’t as popular as Installous, there are bound to be new services emerging that will get everyone’s attention sooner or later.
