BlackBerry Explains Ads For BBM

BlackBerry Explains Ads For BBMAs we reported the other day, BlackBerry appeared to be testing a beta for their BBM Android app that would introduce ads into the messaging service. Based on the description, it sounded like the ads weren’t intrusive as they would appear as Channel Updates.

This is versus more intrusive ads found in free games and apps where banners might appear at the top of the app or have a full popup ad display every now and then. The good news is that if you were worried that this could happen, you can rest assured as Jeff Gadway of BlackBerry posted on the BlackBerry blog detailing how BBM’s ads will work. (more…)

Sony Socialife News Reader App Now Open To All Android Phones

There certainly isn’t any shortage of news reading applications, both Google and Apple offer their homegrown apps on their mobile platforms, apart from the hundreds of developers who have made similar apps. The Sony Socialife News app has always been exclusive to the company’s Xperia devices as well as VAIO PCs, but now it has opened up the app for all Android devices, regardless of who manufactures them. Any device running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or higher is compatible with the application.

Sony says that this app has been designed for high-speed viewing. It pulls in news from a wide variety of sources, including social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, it even pulls in YouTube videos. Through the Add Feeds function, users can easily add more sources or can surf through Sony’s affiliated news partners for content that might interest them.

Users can also add RSS feeds and blog posts to the app. It allows bookmarking of social media posts and news articles for easy reading at a later time. Bookmarks are synced across multiple devices so users can always pick up right where they left off. A homescreen widget is available as well which can display the users’ particular content of choice. Socialife News will play host to official content of the FIFA World Cup as Sony is an official sponsor of the event. The app is available for free via the Google Play Store.

Snapchat Competitor, Puffchat, Found To Have Security Flaw

Snapchat Competitor, Puffchat, Found To Have Security FlawHave you ever heard of the app Puffchat? Well if you haven’t, don’t worry. Basically Puffchat is a competitor to the popular Snapchat app, which for those unfamiliar allows users to send multimedia content such as photos and videos to other Snapchat users, which will then be deleted from the system after a brief period of time.

This is great for sending sensitive material that you don’t want to get out, although so far the running joke is that Snapchat is more of a platform for sexting, if anything. That being said, Puffchat has been discovered to be not as secure as Snapchat. In fact it seems that it is so insecure that anyone with a little computer knowledge will be able to access supposedly deleted photos and messages. Yikes! (more…)
