Nokia’s Play To app now available for Lumia devices, enables DLNA-connectivity
Posted in: Today's ChiliHot on the heels of its Camera Extras app, Nokia is again satiating Lumia owners’ hunger for expanded features with its recently released (and officially out of beta) Play To app for Windows Phone. For those unfamiliar, this essentially Espoo’s take on DLNA, allowing you to stream multimedia from your phone to any DLNA-equipped devices connected within your local network. As My Nokia Blog notes, the app has gladly arrived earlier than expected, and it’s free to download just like the company’s other Lumia-exclusive offerings in the Marketplace (a.k.a. the Nokia collection). So what are you waiting for? Hit up the Marketplace from your device to download it for yourself and let us know how it goes in the comments.

Gmail iOS App Finally Supports Notification Center and Persistent Login [Apps]
Posted in: Today's Chili Google just updated the Gmail iOS app, adding improvements that might encourage people to, you know, actually use it. The most important upgrade is support for Notification Center, which means you can now configure the app to show you alerts with message previews. For everyone who’s annoyed by needing to login into Gmail every single time you open it because your session has expired, the updated Gmail now has persistent login. Unfortunately, Gmail for iOS is still basically just a webapp, which means that offline access is still barely there. Little by little, though, it seems Gmail is heading in the right direction. Well, it’s hardly the release of a new summer blockbuster, but getting full length content from the New York Times in Flipboard is certainly going to excite news hounds that also appreciate fine UI design. A lot of content from magazines and newspapers is presented in abbreviated format in the slick app, but now Times subscribers will have unfettered access to the “paper of record’s” reporting. Even non-subscribers will be able to read some of the publications articles for free, just as they can through the site. Now all you have to do is wait for the switch to be flipped on Thursday and hope that other outlets follow suit.

Flipboard—the social reading app which is no longer confined to iOS—has just announced that New York Times subscribers will be able to read all the paper’s content through the app, on any platform, from this Thursday. That’s a big deal for the Times, Flipboard and readers alike. More »
BBC launches iPhone iPlayer app in the UK, adds 3G streaming to its mobile site
Posted in: airplay, apps, hdpostcross, ios, iPhone, ipod touch, IpodTouch, minipost, mobile, mobilepostcross, Today's Chili, ukWhile international viewers have had around a week to play with the new dedicated iPhone app, the Beeb has finally launched its iPlayer in its native UK. Replacing the browser-based player of old, it now allows you to stream both radio and TV shows through a 3G connection. The new app also adds HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) which allows itself to tweak the stream quality depending on your signal strength and hopefully allowing you to catch up on Top Gear uninterrupted. Like its overseas version, the new iOS app also throws in AirPlay streaming to Apple TV. Android and Symbian fans shouldn’t feel too overlooked; The BBC are promising to enable 3G to all compatible devices through its mobile web version very soon, with a dedicated 3G-friendly Android app being primed for the new year.

Mac App Store Hits 100 Million Downloads
Posted in: Apple, apps, Mac, mac os x, Software and Operating Systems, Today's ChiliApple’s iOS App Store has been a huge success since it first launched in July of 2008, with billions of downloads occurring over the past three years. So naturally, Apple decided to recycle the model for software built for its Mac OSX desktop platform, launching its own App Store in January of this year.
It’s doing well, to say the least. Apple announced on Monday over 100 million Mac apps have been downloaded since the Mac App Store debuted nearly one year ago.
“In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry,”Apple SVP Phil Schiller said in a statement.
The Mac App Store, a feature of OS X Lion, is structured similarly to Apple’s well-known iOS App Store. The iOS App Store has seen over 18 billion downloads and houses more than half a million apps. The Mac App Store is home to “thousands of apps” including things like Photoshop Elements and products from Autodesk.
The 100 million downloads figure only reflects individual app purchases. It does not include sales of OS X Lion or updates to apps purchased from the Mac App Store.
As Apple’s success with the app store model has grown, others have followed suit with their own versions. Last week Microsoft detailed its Windows Store, Microsoft’s marketplace for Windows 8 desktop and tablet applications. Although its policies and pricing scheme differs from that of Apple, it’s clear where the inspiration for the store stemmed from. Microsoft, however, boasts a much larger user base compared to Apple’s, with 500 million Windows 7 users worldwide compared to approximately 30 million Mac users.
With those sorts of numbers, it’s possible that Microsoft’s Windows Store could eventually prove to be more successful than Apple’s. But for now, Apple’s success in the app store arena is the one to beat.
