Power Sleep App Will Use Your Unused CPU Cycles For Science

When you are sleeping, chances are you have plugged your phone in to charge for the night. However since you are sleeping, it also means that your phone is not being used, meaning that there is a lot of unused processing power. But what if you could “share” that processing power in the name of science? Would that be something you might be interested in? If you are, perhaps you might be interested in downloading a new app by Samsung called Power Sleep. The app itself is pretty straightforward as it is more or less an alarm clock. However underneath the alarm clock facade is a method in which unused CPU cycles would help to create a supercloud computer which will be made accessible to researchers all over the world.

This is a joint effort by Samsung and Cheil Worldwide in which the app would use unused CPU cycles to help compute protein calculations that will be used to help find a cure for diseases like Alzheimer’s. Now if you’re worried that your phone might end up processing more data than you would like, fret not because the app will only compute data that is under 1MB, meaning that your phone will not be overly taxed by highly complex calculations, but at the same time you can rest easy knowing that while you sleep, your unused CPU cycles are being put to a good and noble use. The app is free and available via the Google Play Store, so head on over for the download.

Office For iPad Could Be Arriving Sooner Than We Think

Office For iPad Could Be Arriving Sooner Than We ThinkFor years we have been hearing how Microsoft could be developing a version of Office for the iPad. Given the popularity of the iPad and how Microsoft’s Office suite is just as popular and used by students, office workers, and government officials around the world, the combination of both hardware and software does make sense. However last we heard, Office for the iPad would only arrive once the touch-friendly version of the app for Windows is released. Well the good news is that perhaps we might not have to wait too long after all, thanks to a report from ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley.

According to Foley, she has heard from her sources that Office for the iPad could be arriving sooner than we think, and that it might even arrive ahead of the Windows 8 touch-friendly version as well. “According to one of my contacts, Ballmer OK’d the suggestion by the Office team that they’d bring Office for iPad to market as soon as it was ready, even though that would likely mean before the Windows 8 version.” Foley also states that she has heard that the app would see a release within the first half of 2014, while previously her sources informed her that its release would be in the Fall of 2014, so for those looking forward to some familiar productivity apps on their tablets, this is definitely something worth keeping an eye out for.

Viber Acquired By Rakuten For $900 Million

Viber Acquired By Rakuten For $900 MillionFor those unfamiliar with the Japanese market, Rakuten is basically Japan’s answer to Amazon, which by its implication would suggest that the company is pretty huge and a force to be reckoned with in terms of online services in Japan. Now according to a press release from Rakuten, they have announced that they will be acquiring Viber for a whopping $900 million. According to Rakuten’s chairman and CEO, Hiroshi Mikitani, “I am tremendously excited to welcome Viber to the Rakuten family. Viber delivers the most consistently high quality and convenient messaging and VoIP experience available.”

Viber’s CEO, Talmon Marco, sounded just as pleased by the acquisition, saying, “Sharing similar aspirations with Rakuten, our vision is to be the world’s No.1 communications platform and our combination with Rakuten is an important step in that direction.” Viber is thought by many to be a rival to Skype in terms of providing free VoIP calls on mobile devices. The platform boasts over 300 million users worldwide which was instrumental in helping to draw the attention of Rakuten. While Rakuten might be a name familiar in Japan, the company hopes that with the acquisition of Viber, they will be able to expand beyond Japan’s borders and we can’t wait to see what the company will do with their latest acquisition.

Taco Bell’s App Will Speed Up The Order Process

Taco Bells App Will Speed Up The Order ProcessIf you’re not the type of person who wants to find parking, get down from their car, and stand in line to place their order at a fast food outlet like Taco Bell, we guess the drive-thru is a good alternative, at least until recently where Taco Bell has announced that they are currently in the process of testing an app that will allow customers to place their order and make their payment before even leaving the house, allowing them to cut out a good chunk of the ordering process and just head on over to their nearby Taco Bell to pick up their order.

Speaking to the LA Times, Taco Bell’s mobile lead, Jeff Jenkins, said, “With the popularity of millennials and smart phones, we saw this [mobile ordering] coming, and decided to build the ground work a couple of years ago for mobile […] Mobile is going to be the biggest sort of innovator, shake-up in the quick service industry since the drive-thru.” Once the order has been placed, customers can choose where they want to pick up their order and based on their phone’s GPS, the food will only start cooking once it has detected that you are near. From there customers can also choose if they’d rather pickup their order in-store or via the drive-thru, depending on which queue is shorter.

Even I Would Read the Bible If It Were This Pretty

Even I Would Read the Bible If It Were This Pretty

Despite having grown up in the Bible Belt, I’m not terribly religious. Sure, I still go to our quaint little Episcopal church with my mom on holidays but, if you asked me what happens in the Book of Revelation, I’d be dumbfounded. Unless I had an app like this.

iPhone App Keeps You Updated On Drone Strikes

iPhone App Keeps You Updated On Drone StrikesWould it be somewhat morbid if you could download an app that would basically track drone kills conducted over in the Middle East? After all reading about the death and carnage caused by war in the newspapers alone is a little disconcerting, let alone being notified in real-time whenever there are drone strikes. Then again we guess there are some who are curious and want to be updated all the time, and now there’s an app for that called Metadata+. Developed by John Begley, this app has been in the works for several years now but has constantly been rejected by Apple, originally claiming to be not entertaining enough, before it was told to Begley that his app might have content that users might find questionable.
