Smartphone App And Accessory Lets You Check Your Cholesterol Levels

Smartphone App And Accessory Lets You Check Your Cholesterol LevelsOur smartphones can perform many tasks these days, anywhere from tracking our running distance, speed, calories burnt, to detecting wind direction and more, so we guess it does not come as a complete surprise that our smartphones will also be able to check our cholesterol levels for us. This is achieved through an app and an additional smartphone accessory that the average person can use to check their cholesterol levels at home by themselves without having to make constant trips to the doctor which can get expensive, not to mention time consuming. Of course we expect that if anything is out of the ordinary, that’s when you should drop by the doctor’s, but for regular monitoring, this could do in a pinch.

Created by researchers from Cornell University, this accessory sports a reagent test strip in which you will need to draw a bit of your own blood to place on it. The reagent strip will then change different colors depending on your cholesterol levels. What makes this different from how it is normally done is that it takes advantage of your smartphone’s camera and flash to help illuminate and capture the color of the strip, thus doing away with the need for a health-care professional and specialized (read expensive) equipment.

Lara Croft: Reflections Revealed To Be A F2P Card Game

Earlier this year, Square Enix registered a trademark for the Lara Croft: Reflections name. Unfortunately at that time, it was unknown as to what the title could be about, save for the fact that it could be Tomb Raider-related. Some have speculated that the game could be a Tomb Raider game designed for the Nintendo 3DS or the PS Vita, but as it turns out, Lara Croft: Reflections is in reality a free-to-play card game, presumably joining the likes of Blizzard’s Hearthstone, which is also a free-to-play card game that is based on the Warcraft franchise.

As it stands, Lara Croft: Reflections is being tested in Australia and New Zealand at the moment, although we’re not sure if there are plans to bring it to the US and other parts of the world once the testing is complete, but presumably it will and will most likely make its way stateside come 2014. Like we said this is a free-to-play card game meaning that while the game is free to download, chances are Square Enix will be charging gamers for in-game purchases. In any case if you’re wondering what’s in store for you when the game is released, you can check out the preview video above that was put together by the folks at TouchGameplay.

PKPKT Is A Bluetooth Game That Lets You Pickpocket From Bluetooth Phones

Want to commit a crime without actually doing it? That’s pretty much what PKPKT is looking to achieve. The game, despite for iPhones in mind, lets gamers “steal” from one another through the use of Bluetooth. The concept is similar to pickpocketing, hence the name PKPKT, where you will be able to “steal” money and items from nearby players who have the game and who might have left their Bluetooth on. Once the stealing has been successfully completed, gamers will be able to chat to one another through the same Bluetooth connection.

The good news for those worried about privacy is that the identities of the gamers are hidden, so you won’t be able to tell which phone stole from you. According to Jeremy Schoenherr, the game’s designer, “All that data lives nowhere except the two devices involved […] The app exchanges no personal information (there’s no link to Facebook, Twitter, etc.) so users can feel safe playing the game.” Schoenherr is also looking for ways to evolve and expand the game to make it more enjoyable long term.

As it stands PKPKT is a free download via the iTunes App Store, so if you’d like to put your iPhone’s Bluetooth to use, this is a pretty innovative game worth checking out. In the meantime you can get an idea of how it works in the video above.
