In the past we have heard how Nintendo has reiterated their stance on not creating games for the mobile market, although we’re not sure why that is the case especially given how more of us own mobile devices than Nintendo-based handheld consoles. However given that the Wii U isn’t exactly a stellar success, unlike the Wii, perhaps Nintendo could be having a change of heart. According to a report by King 5, word has it that Nintendo could be looking to “experiment” with apps, and the good/bad news is that they will be starting with iOS first.
Speaking to King 5, Nintendo of America’s President and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime, “We’re also doing a lot of experimentation of what I would call the little experiences you can have on your smartphone and tablet that will drive you back to your Nintendo hardware. It’s largely going to be much more marketing activity-oriented, but we’ve done little things where there’s some element of gameplay – a movement, a shaking, something like that.”
Based on this, it sounds as though what Nintendo could be offering is a taste as opposed to a full-fledged gaming experience which they’re hoping will make gamers want to purchase Nintendo hardware. Granted this isn’t exactly what we want to hear, but we suppose it has to start somewhere, right? No telling when these little tie-ins will begin rolling out, but we can’t wait to see what form it could take.

While most developers have been more than happy to get their iOS 7 optimized apps out there, there are still plenty of apps in the iTunes App Store which have yet to be updated to be in line with either the iOS 7 look, or optimized for the latest operating system. Sometimes it’s because the apps are developed by third-party developers for companies such as banks, so the update isn’t necessarily in their control, but it looks like they will have to speed things up because in a notice issued by Apple to all of its iOS developers, starting from 1st February 2014, all app submissions and app updates must be optimized to run on iOS 7.
However this does not mean that apps need to resemble iOS 7 and adopt its flatter and more minimalist look. After all this is entirely up to the developers themselves, but in terms of features and compatibility, the app will need to play nicely with Apple’s latest operating system, and possibly with the 64-bit architecture that Apple introduced with the iPhone 5s and its A7 chipset. For those who don’t keep up with Apple’s new guidelines, well safe to say they can expect their apps/updates to be rejected. We suppose this is also good news for users who can expect to have iOS 7 optimized apps in the near future.

Earlier this month, Yahoo acquired a company known as SkyPhrase, a company which specalizes in natural language processing. While it was unclear as to what Yahoo had planned for the company, it was revealed in a video discovered by Android Police that it would seem as though Yahoo’s plans for the company would be to build their very own voice-controlled personal assistant, which unsurprisingly brings other assistants such as Apple’s Siri to mind. Unfortunately the video itself is rather short and doesn’t really demonstrate the app’s prowess, but based on what we can see, we can look forward to the usual features, such as travel, traffic, weather, restaurant locations, and etc.
Now the next question would be when could we be seeing this app launched? Will this be a completely separate app on its own, or could it be integrated into existing Yahoo apps? More importantly can we expect this to arrive on a variety of platforms? Given that Yahoo would be more or a Google competitor rather than an Apple rival, it would be safe to assume that this new feature of Yahoo could potentially be a rival to Google Now, but we suppose we will have to see its final implementation to get a better idea of it.

We know many Facebook users have been pestering the social network to release a “dislike” button, and while that might not be happening anytime soon (a “sympathize” button appears to be more likely), Facebook has since released what looks like a somewhat suitable alternative in the form of a “dislike” sticker. The stick is basically a thumbs down sign and can be accessed via the Facebook Messenger app under the “Likes” sticker set. While this sticker cannot be used to express dislike of a post, it can be used in chats which we suppose is better than nothing for now. The sticker pack is free for download so go ahead and check it out.
Facebook introduced stickers to its Messenger service a while back and seems to be competing with the likes of LINE which also offers it users sticker packs to express a variety of emotions, not to mention it also ties in with pop culture and the latest trends, where users can spend real money on purchasing said sticker packs. However as it stands, Facebook does not charge for their sticker packs yet, but we suppose if it starts to catch on, we wouldn’t be surprised if Facebook begins to monetize it. So what do you guys say? Will this dislike sticker do for now?

With the end of 2013 closing in, Apple’s annual App Store and iTunes numbers are in, and among them we find an eclectic mix of apps, albums, movies, books, and other varied content categories.
