BBM Shows Signs Of Popularity In India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines

BBM Shows Signs Of Popularity In India, Indonesia, Malaysia, PhilippinesBBM for iOS and Android was released in October and so far we’ve seen some success from the app, such as it experiencing an impressive 5 million downloads within 8 hours of its launch, and with the app rising to the number 2 spot on the iTunes App Store shortly after its release, however it seems that the success of the app could be limited to certain regions. According to Distimo, they have been keeping an eye on the cross-platform version of BBM for iOS and based on their findings, it seems that over in countries such as India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, BBM has no problems holding its own against the likes of LINE, WeChat, KakaoTalk, and Viber.

However over in countries such as China, Japan, and Korean, BBM has yet to make a significant impact and are clearly dominated by the competition. In a way this isn’t surprising as BlackBerry devices have been popular in regions such as Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines (Thailand as well, but oddly enough they weren’t listed in Distimo’s survey), so it could be that former BlackBerry users who might have made the switch to iOS wanted to remain in touch with BlackBerry friends, or perhaps preferred the more familiar interface that is BBM, could explain the app’s popularity.

Luna Delivery Service Will Deliver Packages At Night When Youre Actually Home

With the holiday season upon us, we’re sure many of you have learned by now that the best way to do any of your holiday shopping this year is through online retailers. Misfit Raises $15.2M From Li Ka-shing’s Horizons Ventures For Its Activity Tracker, The Shine

    misfit shine

Misfit Wearables, the hardware startup that built a sleek activity tracker called the Shine, just picked up $15.2 million from Li Ka-shing’s Horizons Ventures in a big, new growth round.

Jason Wong, a director at the Hong Kong-based firm, will be joining the board. Misfit added that all of its existing investors, including Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Paypal co-founder Max Levchin and incTANK all participated and took their full pro-rata in the round.

Misfit was co-founded by former Apple CEO John Sculley along with Sonny Vu and Sridhar Iyengar, who were behind the medical devices company that had the first Apple blessed add-on for the iPhone, which was a glucose meter.

Misfit launched the Shine earlier this year; it’s a quarter-sized activity tracker that awards users points for walking, running and swimming among other activities. Unlike other wrist-bound activity trackers, the Shine can be worn anywhere — as a clip-on to your shoes or your shirt, or as a necklace. That form factor has made it surprisingly popular among female consumers, we’ve heard from sources close to the company.

Like competing products such as the Jawbone, the Shine pairs itself with a mobile app that shows day-by-day graphs of activity. It has a cool syncing behavior, where you place the Shine on top of your smartphone and little circles radiate outward from the device until your phone downloads the data it contains.

The company hasn’t shared detailed statistics on sales so far except to say that that they’ve shipped “hundreds of thousands” of units to more than 20 countries in the last few months.

They’ve also scored key distribution deals with retailers like Apple, Best Buy and Target, which will help on top of online sales through their website.

The funding is going toward new, yet-to-be-launched products that should come out next year. CEO Sonny Vu says that the Shine was merely a starting product and that they have a number of other wearable concepts in the works.

Facebook Exec In Charge Of Instagram Advertising Leaves For Snapchat

Facebook Exec In Charge Of Instagram Advertising Leaves For SnapchatWe have heard the rumors of how Facebook (and Google) had at one point in time attempted to acquire Snapchat, only to be turned down as Snapchat thought that they were worth more than what Facebook and Google were offering. We then heard the rumors that Instagram, owned by Facebook, was looking to introduce a private messaging feature to its services in a bid to compete with Snapchat. Kind of like if we can’t have you, we’ll compete with you. Now we’re not sure if this is a coincidence, but it seems that Emily White, a Facebook executive who was in charge of luring advertisers to Instagram, has left her position and will be taking up a new post at Snapchat as its COO.

Instagram did not seem too upset that she was leaving for what seemed like a potential rival, with Instagram’s CEO and co-founder, Kevin Systrom, saying, “I cannot thank Emily enough for her contributions to Instagram. She was tasked with getting the first ads.” White herself was quoted as saying, “It happened really quickly, but to have an actual COO role in one of many companies that is disrupting the communications arena is one I could not pass up.” Given that all these companies recently made the headlines, it’s hard to think of this as a mere coincidence.

Google Compute Engine made generally available

Google has made its Google Compute Engine generally available, more reliable, and less expensive. This will attract more developers and engineers to use Google’s cloud platform for running computations and apps on behalf of their customers. This in turn will lead to more of the public’s data and activities being processed through Google’s data centers […]

Microsoft Reportedly Increasing Windows Phone OTA Downloads To 100MB

Microsoft Reportedly Increasing Windows Phone OTA Downloads To 100MBWhen it comes to OTA downloads, most mobile operating systems will place a cap on the download to prevent users from accidentally exceeding the data cap allotted to them by their carriers. For iOS the limit has been increased to 100MB with iOS 7 (originally from 20MB), and it looks like Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform will soon be getting an increase in its cap as well. This is according to several reports where some users have claimed that their OTA limit has since been raised to 100MB as well, although this does not appear to be widespread yet.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft increased their OTA cap. Back when Windows Phone 7 was first launched, the cap was set at 20MB before being raised to 50MB, but now it looks like Microsoft will be bumping it to 100MB. For the most part, most OTA updates tend to be relatively small, but we suppose having the freedom of 100MB gives developers a chance to create bigger updates, or allow users to update their apps freely without having to wait until they get home or get to a WiFi location. In any case there is a chance Microsoft is rolling this out on a regional basis, so perhaps it might be a while before we receive it ourselves. In the meantime if you have received the update, do let us know in the comments below!
