If you suspect that you might be suffering from arrhythmia, or erratic heartbeat, you might want to get that checked. It could be nothing and could be a mild inconvenience, or it could lead to something a lot more serious and while heading to a doctor is probably the best solution, there is a way for you to check it yourself first to see if you are imagining things or if something serious is going on. This is thanks to an app developed by medical researchers for HealthSTATS International along with the University College London.

The app, AFDetect, will make use of your phone’s built-in camera and flash light to detect a person’s pulse, which is then analyzed to see if you are suffering from a problem called atrial fibrillation. One of the advantages of the app is that you will be able to test yourself at all times of the day if you choose, compared to ECG tests conducted in the hospital where it can be a lengthy and sometimes expensive process, and where doctors might miss the irregularity if your heart palpitations do not occur when you are at the doctor’s.

Of course hospital equipment is definitely a lot more accurate at diagnosing, especially given that this pretty much relies on your phone’s camera and flash, but like we said, this should do in a pinch and for times when you just want to do a quick check. The app is available for Android and an iOS version is expected to arrive in January.

Last we heard, Android is currently dominating the smartphone market and it looks like that is a trend that does not appear to be slowing down, thanks to Android’s open source system that allows a variety of manufacturers to create devices without having to pay any licensing fee to Google. With that being said, shouldn’t developers be more interested in developing for Android since it has a much larger user base? While that is one way of looking at it, it seems that according to data compiled by Business Insider, it was found that in terms of monetization, another great incentive for developers, iOS offers a return rate which is five times that of Android overall.

Basically for every $1 earned by iOS developers, Android developers only earn $0.19, but if we were to look at paid downloads and in-app purchases, the gap isn’t as wide with Android developers earning $0.43 to every $1 iOS developers make. In fact it was found just last month that ads on Apple’s platform actually yielded returns 1,800% higher compared to the same ads found on Android, which according to advertising firm Nanigans, “Audiences cost more on iPhone, and the reason is that it’s worth it.” What do you guys reckon?

While BBM is pretty established as far as messaging apps are concerned, it does have some pretty stiff competition in the form of WhatsApp, LINE,Viber, and etc., all of which have established themselves on iOS and Android operating systems for years. Well it looks like BlackBerry could be making up for lost time as the company has recently announced that they have managed to partner up with several Android manufacturers who will ensure that the BBM app, as far as Android devices are concerned, will come preinstalled on said devices.

According to BlackBerry’s press release, these OEMs are from the Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East region, with names that some of you guys may or may not be familiar with such as, Be, Brightstar, Celkon, EVERCOSS, IMO, Micromax, Mito, Snexian, Spice, TECNO, TiPhone and Zen. While BlackBerry would undoubtedly benefit greater from partnering with companies such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony, who are some of the bigger names in the Android industry, we guess this is a good start and perhaps in the future more Android OEMs will be hopping aboard the BBM bandwagon.
