Dropbox Releases Update For iOS 7

Dropbox Releases Update For iOS 7Just last week, Dropbox unveiled what looked like a potentially new design for iOS 7. The good news for Dropbox users is that if you did not already set your apps to be updated automatically, you can hit up the iTunes App Store and download the update which will bring your version of Dropbox up to the latest version where not only has the app been redesigned to fit the overall flatter and minimalist theme of iOS 7, but it has also introduced a host of small tweaks that should hopefully make your Dropbox experience better.

For example Dropbox has integrated the support for AirDrop, allowing users to share links and files easily, and have also reportedly increased the speed of the app as well, such as photo loading and video playback. They have also corrected some minor bugs that caused the app to crash once in a while. In any case the visual redesign is a welcome change, so if you don’t already use Dropbox, you can download it for free via the iTunes App Store. In the meantime what do you guys make of the latest changes? Do you love the new design of the app?

Google Play Store’s “Designed for tablets” rolling out as default

Last month, Google announced that it would be making the Play Store’s “Designed for tablets” section default for slate users, something that would take effect on November 21. As promised, Google has started rolling this change out today, and tablet owners should be seeing it show up by default any time now. The change puts […]

WhatsApp For iOS 7 Caught On Video

WhatsApp is undoubtedly one of the most popular messaging platforms around at the moment, and while it made its initial debut on iOS devices, surprisingly the company has yet to release an update that would bring the app in line with the look and feel of Apple’s iOS 7, which sports a cleaner, flatter, and more minimal look, instead choosing to update the app for other platforms instead. WhatsApp users might also recall how long it took the company to release an updated app for the iPhone 5’s larger display. (more…)

More Developers Planning On Developing For Windows Phone In 2014

More Developers Planning On Developing For Windows Phone In 2014When it comes to app availability or variety, safe to say that iOS and Android are taking the top two spots, with both platforms numbering apps close to a million by now. Windows Phone is pretty far behind at over a hundred thousand, although if Joe Belfiore’s promise is anything to go by, we can expect that gap to close by the end of 2014. While the executive’s promise is one thing, it’s really up to developers to decide if the Windows Phone platform is worth developing for, and the good news is that it looks like more developers are hopping on board come 2014.

This is according to a Strategy Analytics Developer Survey where 1,600 developers were surveyed in September and were asked which platforms they were planning on supporting in 2014. Surprisingly Windows Phone saw 32% of developers saying they would develop for the platform, and what makes it even more surprising is that this number is double of the 16% who said that for 2013. Based on the chart above, it appears that Android is still the favorite platform to develop for, which is unsurprising given that Android commands the largest market share at the moment. Apple’s iOS platform appears to be behind by about 13-14%, although its gains from 2013 to 2014 are higher than Android.

HBO Go Lands On Google Chromecast

Google has just announced that HBO Go is now available on Chromecast.

This means that Chromecast owners with an HBO Go subscription can now stream HBO’s content from their Android or iOS device, as well as the HBO Go web app.

Chromecast is Google’s $35 answer to the Apple TV, Roku, etc., letting users stream content from YouTube, Netflix, Pandora and more to their HDTVs from any device. It looks a bit like a USB dongle, and functions similarly to AirPlay in that users can control the TV from multiple devices, throwing content from an Android phone or tablet direct to the TV.

Here is what HBO’s CTO Otto Berkes has to say about it:

Google’s Chromecast is one of the newest, more exciting devices in the marketplace today, so we are very happy to bring this capability to our subscribers. From the beginning, our goal has been to bring HBO GO to the devices where viewers want to watch it and Chromecast definitely falls into that category.

LG promises to stop your Smart TV spying on you

In light of accusations that its Smart TVs were sending private data to its servers, LG has admitted that some of its sets are behaving in ways they shouldn’t be. In a statement, the Korean manufacturer conceded that it has been collecting channel, TV platform and broadcast source data from some units, even when the feature was switched off. However, the company said that when the feature operates normally, it helps provide viewing recommendations to other LG Smart TV owners based on what they are watching. In response to claims it was also beaming over names of files located on connected USB keys, LG admits that it actually forms part of an upcoming service that searches the internet for detailed information on a particular film or TV show.

Understandably, both features might leave a nasty taste in your mouth, especially if you own one of the affected Smart TVs. With that in mind, LG says that while it has never stored private data, it is working on a new firmware update that will ensure its data-collection settings adhere to user preferences — that’ll include killing off its file metadata-matching service before it had the chance to live.

LG regrets any concerns these reports may have caused and will continue to strive to meet the expectations of all our customers and the public. We hope this update clears up any confusion.

Parrot Announces Zik And AR.Drone 2.0 App Compatibility For Windows

Parrot Announces Zik And AR.Drone 2.0 App Compatibility For WindowsParrot is a company known for a couple of products, such as the AR.Drone 2.0 and the Zik headphones which stood out partially thanks to its rather clean and minimalist design by Philippe Starck. The downside to these two products that added functionality that came from its accompanying apps were limited to just iOS and Android devices, but then again given that iOS and Android are the two largest smartphone platforms around, it made sense from a business point of view. Well the good news is that with Windows Phone starting to gain some traction, Parrot has teamed up with Microsoft and have announced Windows and Windows Phone app compatibility for both products.
