Archos Helium Smartphones Unveiled

Archos Helium Smartphones Unveiled[CES 2014] Archos from France is still hanging tough in the extremely competitive smartphone market, and I clearly remember them for churning out some decent portable media players in the days before the iPod overtook all. Well, Archos also happened to be one of the first Android tablet manufacturers in the world, and they have now graced CES 2014 with a couple of smartphones from their Helium range. You will find that neither of these will be all hot air, where the Helium smartphones would make up part of Archos’ high end offerings.

Archos To Launch A Line Of “Pebble-Like” Smartwatches For iOS And Android At CES

Screen Shot 2013-12-30 at 12.47.34 PM

Archos just dropped a huge smattering of CES news in advance of the huge annual tech show, which kicks off next week in Las Vegas. Among the various announcements, tucked away near the bottom, is the revelation that it will be introducing a “selection of smartwatches” for 2014, which will start at under £50 (roughtly $82 U.S.).

Archos doesn’t go into much detail about its smartwatches, saying only that they’ll have a “pebble-like” design and will work with both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The “pebble-like” seems like a blatant shot across the bow of Pebble, the Kickstarter-backed hardware startup that began building smartwatches under that name this past year, though it’s probably meant on the surface to indicate the things will look somewhat like rocks.

The Pebble is arguably the current leader in the smartwatch space, having sold somewhere around 300,000 units to date according to the latest official figures released by the company. Archos, the French company behind a line of moderately successful media players, and subsequently many Android-based tablets and gaming gadgets of questionable quality, looks to be trying to exploit the opportunity exposed by newcomer Pebble with cheaper devices in a range of options to suit the needs of various consumers.

Archos is targeting “simplicity and function” with its smartwatch designs, the company says, which could actually seem to be at cross-purposes. Maybe they’ll have some feature heavy designs, more like the Samsung Galaxy Gear, and some that are essentially just streamlined data delivery devices, more like the Pebble itself. Either way, I highly doubt Archos will find a red-hot seller in any smartwatch design – but that doesn’t mean it can’t meddle with the grand plans of Pebble and other startups.

Pebble is currently running a lot of sales and promotions, and giving away a good number of devices. This means that either A) it’s finding interest is dropping off after initial demand has been satisfied; or B) it’s gearing up to release second-generation hardware. Regardless, I still think we’ve yet to see any proof that watch-based computing is something that’s feasible as a mainstream device, and entrants from Archos are unlikely to provide said evidence.

Quechua And Archos Unveils Rugged Smartphone

Quechua And Archos Unveils Rugged SmartphoneIf you’re into mountain climbing, you might have heard of the Quechua brand before. For those who have been following the tech scene, the Archos brand is also one probably familiar to you guys as well. Now it looks like both companies have teamed up to produce a smartphone which combines Archos’ smartphone expertise along with the ruggedness that comes from the Quechua brand. Oddly enough the result device does not sport a name or a model number, but is rather referred to as “Quechua’s rugged 5-inch Android-powered smartphone”.

In terms of the design it does not appear to be the sleekest or more well-designed handset to date, but given that it is designed with ruggedness and durability in design, chances are it will appeal to a different type of crowd. The handset will feature a 5” HD display and will be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor from Qualcomm. It will also feature 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a 5MP rear-facing camera, 4GB of onboard storage expandable via microSD, and a 3,500mAh battery. It will run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a host of Google apps, such as YouTube, Maps, and etc. It is priced at around $313 although there’s no word on availability just yet.

The main difference between the four smartphones in the new Titanium line (PDF) is screen size and resolution. The line includes the 40 Titanium, 45 Titanium, 50 Titanium, and 53 Titanium. The 40 Titanium has a four-inch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480. The 45 Titanium has a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 854 x 480. The 50 Titanium features a five-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 960 x 540. The last of the phones is the 53 Titanium featuring a 5.3-inch 854 x 480 resolution screen.

The other features are the same including Android 4.2.2 for the operating system and MT 6572 dual-core 1.3 GHz processors. All the phones have 4 GB of integrated storage and 512 MB RAM. They’ll also feature a five-megapixel rear camera and integrated A-GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Another the difference between the phones is battery size. The Titanium 40 has a 1500 mAh battery, the 45 Titanium has 1680 mAh unit, the 50 Titanium has a 2100 mAh battery, and the 53 Titanium features a 2500 mAh battery. The phones run on 3G networks with HSPA+ support, which has a theoretical top download speed of 21Mbps.

Pricing ranges from €99.99 to €159.99 (~$137 to $219 USD) with no phone contract required. A launch date for the US is unknown at this time.

While these certainly aren’t top-of-the-line phones, they’re pretty well-appointed for the price, given the fact that the phones come fully unlocked.
