Archos 2 gets official in US, new color leaks out

Oh sure, you could already get your paws around the Archos 2 flash-based PMP if you really, really wanted to, but we’re still thrilled to see the company come clean and begin offering it up on its own website. As of now, prospective buyers in the United States of America can “soon” select the 8GB version in black or white for $59.99, while the 16GB model arrives in the same color options for $40 more. In related news, ArchosLounge has shots of a new blue model, though there’s obviously no way to procure that bad boy just yet. Then again, there’s always Colorware…

Archos 5 firmware adds GPS car holder support, new file browser

We tell ya, the Archos 5 is becoming more inviting by the week. Late last month we saw a much-wanted high-def video plug-in come to light, and now an even newer firmware is adding a few more fantastic amenities. For starters, the v1.6.53 software adds GPS car holder support — something the Archos 605 acquired last April. Essentially, it enables the device to comprehend map and routing data piped in via the hardware mount, and we should point out that it arrives with TeleAtlas maps for eight regions of Europe, North America and Russia. Additionally, users will definitely spot an all new file browser with drag-and-drop and multi-selection functionality, not to mention the TV Snap-on app that enables the unit to store several different channel lists. Archos 2 and Archos 4 flash players leak out

We haven’t heard anything official, but images of an Archos 2 flash player have turned up in a few places on the web today, along with word of an Archos 4. The 2’s already listed on Amazon — it’s not going to rock worlds, but it’s not bad for $60, with 8GB of storage and microSD expansion, a 1.8-inch 128 x 160 display and a voice recorder all in a .35-inch thick package. There’s also a 16GB version on Amazon.de for €68 ($92), but that hasn’t yet made it to the US Amazon site. The Archos 4 is a little more mysterious — all we really know about it is that it’ll have a four-inch screen and 16 to 32GB of flash. We’re guessing these’ll pop soon, we’ll let you know.

New firmware adds high-def video plug-in to Archos 5 / 7

Hey, Archos 5 / 7 users — do we have your attention? Good. You know that high-def support you’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for? Archos just hooked you up good fashion. As of right now, the read link is holding fresh firmware for both players (v1.6.03), which tosses in support for WMV / VC-1 playback at 720p (24fps; 6Mbps maximum). The update also fixes a number of bugs involving MP3 tags, TV recording errors and GUI malfunctions. Give it a download and report back, won’tcha?

Archos’ Android-based MID on track for July?

It hasn’t been much of a secret that Archos has an Android-based tablet / MID in the works, but it looks like the company is now finally talking a bit more openly about it, and dropping a few choice details in its recent year-end results announcement. The key bit is that the company is apparently planning to release the device “at the start of Q3 2009,” which is actually fairly specific as far as these announcements go, though no doubt still subject to change if Archos sees fit. Otherwise, the only word on the MID is that it will pack some telephony features and, of course, include all of Archos’ usual multimedia applications.

1. Amazon.com has a hell of a deal on the 30GB Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player. Normally $299.99, today, the Archos is just $159.99. You can record TV shows, stream and watch videos from your PC, and download movies and music directly. The deal ends today, so move fast.

2. Today’s deal at sellout.woot is the wiRevo A100 Stereo Bluetooth Adapter for iPod and iPhone. Originally with a list price of $99.99, the cheapest I’ve seen it is $19.99, but today’s deal brings it down to $9.99. Archos 10 netbook now available for purchase

So, the last we’d heard, Archos’ 10-inch netbook was going to be available in April, but here it is — the middle-to-beginning-of-the-end of February, and it’s available to order now. If you’d forgotten, the little guy boasts a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, up to 1GB of RAM, the 10-inch screen has a 1024 x 600 resolution, and it runs Windows XP. The starting price for this one is $399.

Archos announces new Moorestown-based netbook, 9-inch tablet

We saw the rough’n’ready Archos 10 get reviewed mere days ago, and now the company’s back with the Atom-powered Archos 10s, a new 20mm thin netbook with 3.5G functionality, 1GB memory, Windows XP Home and up to 160GB storage. Additionally, the company has designs on a 17mm-thin, 9-inch tablet based on Intel’s Moorestown MID platform, to see the light of day sometime this year. This guy will include the Intel System Controller Hub chipset, up to 160GB storage, VOD and hi-def video playback, and digital TV reception. The Archos 10s should be available sometime in April, at a price to be announced.

Archos 10 netbook reviewed: a little rough around the edges

C’mon, did you really expect Archos to knock this out of the park on its first go? Okay, so we sort of did too, but we’re not baffled to hear that the Archos 10 could’ve used a few more days in the oven before hitting primetime. According to a review at Laptop, the unit does have one of the better software stacks, and the speedy hard drive led to some remarkably hasty boost times. That said, the $399 admission price puts it up against some pretty stiff competition, with the Aspire One D150 and the Eee PC 1000HE both offering up more longevous batteries and more comfortable keyboards. In the end, it boiled down to critics preferring the long life and comfy typing over the above-average software suite, but true Archos fanboys may be willing to overlook its drawbacks to still fall in love.

Archos Combining Phone, Tablet with Android

Archos%205.JPGIn a joint statement, Archos and Texas Instruments said Monday that Archos will launch a so-called Internet Media Tablet that will use the Google Android software stack to add phone functionality.

The tablet will be released during the third quarter, the companies said in their statement. The new IMT will be a followon to the Archos 5, pictured, which was launched in October.

The flagship addition is obviously the Android stack, which will turn the tablet into a full-fledged smartphone. “With the integration of voice, ARCHOS is looking to expand beyond portable media players to provide solutions for the converged space, where a foundation in high-quality video content delivery is a benefit,” the company said in a statement.
