ASUS pulls out of Windows RT due to financial losses and ‘industry sentiment’

ASUS pulls out of Windows RT due to financial losses and 'industry sentiment'

This isn’t a huge shock, given that ASUS has already publicly expressed woes about poor sales of its Windows RT products, but CEO Jerry Shen‘s latest comments have a surprising edge of finality to them. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, he repeated that “Windows RT has not been very successful” and said that the company took a writedown on its stock of RT tablets, although he didn’t reveal the size of the loss. He also said that, from now on, ASUS will solely make Windows 8 devices that run on Intel / x86 processors, due to the backwards compatibility with Windows software offered by those products. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has also predicted losses due to its involvement with RT, but it seems to be pushing ahead with a next-gen ARM-based Surface tablet regardless.

New Nexus 7 reportedly coming to the UK August 28th

New Nexus 7 coming to the UK August 28th

We were pleasantly surprised by the latest version of the Nexus 7, which landed in the US at the end of July. A little more patience has been required of Nexus fans on the other side of the pond, however, but the wait will soon be coming to an end. According to Pocket-Lint, ASUS has confirmed that the device will launch at midnight on August 28th, and will offer an asking price of £199.99 for the 16GB WiFi model and £239.99 for the 32GB WiFi-only version. There’s no word on an LTE unit hitting British shores, but we’ll keep you posted if we hear more.

Does Apple drive the tablet market, or ASUS?

This afternoon the folks at the IDC released quarterly worldwide shipment numbers for tablets, suggesting as they did so that a slump in the market this quarter may be due to Apple’s lack of a new iPad. And we got to thinking: it’s easy to relate the growth of the tablet industry over the past […]

Engadget’s laptop buyer’s guide: summer 2013 edition

DNP Engadget's laptop buyer's guide summer 2013 edition

At last: the laptop buyer’s guide we wanted to write three months ago. You see, when it came time to publish our spring edition, Intel was on the cusp of releasing its fourth-generation Core processors, which meant almost everything we were recommending was destined for a refresh. So we basically said, “Wait for Haswell,” and called it a day. By now, though, most of said companies have upgraded their notebooks, if not released brand-new ones, so we can finally recommend stuff without any caveats about obsolescence.

Of note: we’ve eliminated the “touch” and “non-touch” sections since most Windows notebooks (save for gaming machines) now come with touch, or at least offer it as an option. We’ve tried to make it obvious which of our picks have that feature and which ones don’t. Oh, and if we’ve left something off the list, it might be because we don’t yet have enough details about pricing or availability (the new Acer Aspire S3 comes to mind). Enjoy, and as always, if you have a favorite laptop yourself, feel free to tell us about it in the comments.

ASUS reveals ROG TYTAN G70 gaming desktop

DNP Asus reveals ROG TYTAN G70 gaming desktop

Didn’t snag one of the ROG TYTAN G30s ASUS announced in June? Don’t sweat it because the Taiwanese manufacturer has already one-upped itself, combining the transforming case of last year’s TYTAN CG8890 with the G30’s major features — water-cooled Core i7-4770K, one-touch overclocking, multi-monitor and surround sound support. Just for good measure, an available Nvidia GTX780 can replace the ’30’s GTX 680. Sure, the G70 is Haswell-equipped, but that’s not nearly as impressive as activating “Turbo Gear” on it is: Push a button and the system overclocks, then its side and top panels extend outward automatically, exposing the rig’s 10 fans. How cool is that? As frosty as this tower’s innards we’d imagine. If that wasn’t enough to push you over the edge, it’ll wirelessly charge any Qi-compatible devices you might have as well. This beast of a rig should be available soon at retailers near you, but ASUS hasn’t provided pricing. We’re guessing it’s probably expensive — call it a hunch.

ASUS’ 31.5-inch PQ321 4K monitor gets reviewed: pricey, but luscious

ASUS' 315inch PQ321 4K monitor gets reviewed pricey, but luscious

Let’s be honest: almost no one expected one of the world’s first 4K monitors to be ho hum. After all, it has eleventy gazillion pixels. Er, a native 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, but close enough. The gurus over at HotHardware were able to take the 31.5-inch PQ321 for a spin, and predictably, they loved what they saw. Outside of being duly impressed with how the panel handled everything from Photoshop work to gaming, they were also taken aback by the monitor’s svelte frame. In fact, they found it a little tough to look back on a 1080p screen after a couple of weeks with this thing — it’s like the SD-to-HD revolution all over again. That said, they did confess that the product feels a bit ahead of its time, and the monstrous $3,500 price tag is certainly indicative of that. Feel free to hit the source link for the full spiel, but the long and short of it is this: if you’re in the one percent, buy it.
