Audi’s luxury vehicles include a neat night-vision system that will automatically warn drivers about hazards on the road. And to drive home just how life-saving it can be, the company’s ad agency created a brilliant billboard in an airport with a secret hazard that was only revealed to passengers when they got closer and closer.
Back in January at CES 2014, Audi announced its cool new traffic light recognition system. We already know most of the details of the system with its ability to interface with the traffic lights via Wi-Fi. The point of the system is to tell the driver when the light will turn green.
Audi is able to get the traffic light system data via the wireless connection to be able to give the driver a countdown until the light turns green, as well as what speed you’ll need to maintain to make the next light. While those are definitely convenient features, Audi says that the tech could save lots of fuel and reduce emissions as well.
The Audi traffic light information system would be integrated with the engine start/stop tech in the car. The allows the engine to remain turned off until five seconds before the light turns green. As soon as it knows the light is about to change, the engine will re-engage. There are currently start/stop systems which just shut off when you’re stopped, but there’s a fraction of a second lag when accelerating from that standstill.
Audi estimates that if the technology were deployed across Germany, it could save 238 million gallons of fuel and reduce emissions by 15% (though they don’t say over what period of time that savings would take place).
Now if the system could keep morons from sitting there checking Facebook when the light is green, it will be world changing.

At last week’s CES 2014, Audi showed off its new Smart City Traffic Light Assistance, a system that gives you a countdown until the next stoplight on your route will turn green. So you can speed up to catch it on time, or slow down and relax because you have an extra few seconds. It’s magic!
The Smart City Traffic Light Assistance system uses local data sources about traffic light patterns and timing. This info is beamed to your vehicle over Wi-Fi. The system uses this data and the speed and heading of your vehicle, to determine how long you have and gives you a countdown timer for when the next traffic light will turn green.
Okay, it is more math than magic, but it is a thing to celebrate. Now we will know the future. At least as far as traffic lights are concerned.

You know what they say – have car, will travel. That is fine and dandy if the roads that you drive on do not happen to have plenty of traffic, but what about those of us who live in a cosmopolitan city, where a gridlock has come to be accepted as the norm? Surely, modes of public transport might be a better way to get around town, not to mention skipping nefarious jams as well when you are on a train, or have the luxury of a dedicated bus lane? For those who still prefer the comfort of your own car, Audi has a possible solution for you – through the development of a system known as Audi’s Traffic Light Assist that will be able to inform you on the amount of time that you have before an upcoming light changes, so that you can make the necessary adjustments to your speed, letting you hit the spot at the opportune moment.

The Best of CES 2014
Posted in: Today's ChiliCES ain’t quite what it used to be. Pretty much all the big guys have pulled out in favor of doing their own events. The phones are OK and the 4K TVs pretty, but a dime a dozen. But there are still some hidden treasures that are amazing. Here’s all the stuff from CES that made us squeal with glee.
The only thing more annoying than having to obey the speed limit when driving is having to frequently stop at red lights. So in a brilliant attempt to become the world’s awesomest automaker, Audi has created a new in-dash system that tells you how fast or slow you need to drive in order to hit as many green lights as possible.
[CES 2014] At every edition of CES, you can be sure that there will also be an area that showcases vehicles as well as the different kinds of technology that has been incorporated within, or in this particular case of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), from without. We are referring to how German automaker Audi has been demonstrating Qi wireless charging capability at this year’s edition of CES.
This would place Audi alongside the ranks of Daimler, Toyota, Jeep and others who have already incorporated Qi wireless charging capability in current and future car models. Needless to say, cars are but a natural fit for wireless charging, so to have Qi wireless charging capability just about everywhere the consumer needs it makes perfect sense. The Audi phone box that debuted in 2012 has been refreshed to include Qi wireless charging capability, where the electricity in the floor of the phone box will flow to a receiver coil in the smartphone via induction. Future versions will see the very same Audi phone box provide perfect cell reception, in addition to making sure that a user’s smartphone will remain fully charged all the time. Apart from that, Audi makes use of the WLAN hotspot in the car so that it can combine the world of smartphones and tablets with the automotive world in an intelligent manner. [Press Release]
