Riding a bike is a musical experience in more than a metaphorical way: Brakes squeal, spokes click, derailleurs clang. Composer Johnnyrandom sampled himself "playing" his bicycle and the results are positively gorgeous.

The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer is the most famous drum machine ever made. It remains a staple of modern production despite being more than 30 years old. Roland just posted a video teasing for a new product called the Aira TR-08, which it’s positioning as a modern version of the 808. I have no idea what that means, but I might still freak out.

Winamp Lives To Play Another Day
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you owned a computer back in the ’90s, you might have heard of Winamp. It was quite popular, call it the iTunes of the ’90s if you will. This popular music player has been around for quite a long time, but its popularity died down in the mid-2000s, as users were captivated by newer products. AOL, which owned Winamp, had announced its decision to shut down Winamp on December 21st, but it was rumored that perhaps Microsoft might acquire it, which it did not. Instead, as rumored, Radionomy has confirmed its acquisition of Winamp as well as Shoutcast from AOL. The legendary music player lives to play another day.
Radionomy was launched in late 2012, its a free service that lets users generate online radio stations. Shoutcast is an online radio broadcasting service that AOL has sold to Radionomy, which will definitely be using it to further bolster its internet radio services, currently the service has more than 6,000 user programmed online radio stations with over 13 million unique listeners. Alexandre Saboundjian, owner of Radionomy, believes that this acquisition will boost the service’s user base “by a factor of 5 to 10.” They will also be developing new Winamp apps for iOS and Android, which will definitely make us feel nostalgic every time we fire them up on our smartphones. Financial terms of the acquisition have not been revealed, but Belgian publication De Tijd claims that AOL has agreed to take a partial stake in Radionomy as part of a funding round.

A few years ago we featured a harmonica crammed into a NES cartridge. YouTuber basami sentaku’s harmonica not only has a Famicom cartridge case, it produces 8-bit sound with the help of a sound chip from a NES. It also has a mode that plays the coin sound effect from Super Mario Bros. when you blow into it.
Watch basami sentaku and his friends play some chiptunes on the harmonica:
I’d love to hear non-video game music played on that. Basami sentaku-san, I’m sure you’d make a lot of chiptune fans happy if you started selling 8bit harmonicas.

The folks at Beats have reportedly been working on their music streaming service for over two years now and its finally ready for primetime. Beats announced last month that the service will finally go live in January, though back then it didn’t give a concrete date, now it has. In a post on its official blog, the company has confirmed that Beats Music launch date has been pegged on January 21st, the service will finally bring you “the right song for right now.” Initially Beats Music is going to offer more than 20 million songs for $10 per month.
If you and your family subscribe to AT&T, then you’re in for an added advantage. Up to five people and ten devices can have access to Beats Music streaming service for $14.99 per month, normally that sort of access would cost $50. Beats says that the app will be available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone at launch. Customers will be able to try the entire service for free before they decide on dropping $10 per month for unlimited streaming and downloading from the 20 million strong catalog. The company promises that users will find “great” music every time they open the app, and that Beats Music will change the way they listen to music. Are you excited about trying out this new music streaming service, and do you think there’s need for it given that the market is already being catered to by a handful of other similar services?
