Sony Smartphone Cradle Receiver Turns Your Phone Into An In-Dash Touchscreen System

Sony Smartphone Cradle Receiver Turns Your Phone Into An In Dash Touchscreen System

[CES 2014] At the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in Las Vegas, Sony has unveiled a plethora of new products including 4K TVs, camcorders, full HD 3D TVs and much, much more. However there’s one product that it announced rather quietly, in fact it didn’t pop up on many publications’ radars until @evleaks tweeted about it. Sony launched its first ever smartphone cradle receiver which turns your smartphone into an in-dash touchscreen entertainment system for vehicles. Apart from the XSP-N1BT cradle receiver, Sony also unveiled seven new in-car entertainment systems six of which tout Bluetooth with NFC support. All models come with Sony’s new App Remote technology which transforms Android and iOS devices into supplemental music displays and head-unit controllers.

The industry’s first double-DIN smartphone cradle receiver has a clamping system that is capable of supporting a “wide range” of smartphones in the dash. The smartphone’s display will show controls for head-unit functions through App Remote, it is compatible with Bluetooth connected Android devices and USB connected iPhones. App Remote also facilitates voice operation of the head unit and smartphone. The cradle receiver offers CD, USB and tuner source functionality even if a smartphone isn’t connected, thanks to its IR remote. Smartphones placed in the cradle can be charged via a compact USB cable, Sony’s new crop of Xperia smartphones can charge wireless through a magnetic connector. The Sony smartphone cradle receiver XSP-N1BT will be available for purchase in May 2014 with a $250 price tag.

Vizio Portable Smart Audio Devices Run Android Apps

Another day, another gazillion Bluetooth speakers. Vizio recognizes this lack of market differentiation, and has come up with a wireless speaker which truly ups the ante. Vizio’s upcoming series of portable speakers will fully support running Android apps on a built-in touchscreen.

Just revealed at CES 2014, Vizio’s Portable Smart Audio devices both run Android KitKat (4.4), and can install and run apps from the Google Play store. With these handy devices, you’ll be able to not only listen to music or watch video streamed from the Internet – they don’t require a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone or tablet. Though you’ll also be able to stream from Bluetooth or USB devices if you so choose.

You’ll be able to do everything from use the screen and apps for an alarm clock, to watch movies streamed from services like Netflix. The first two devices in the series will come in a bookshelf-happy size with a 4.7″ screen, or a boombox-like version with a 7″ screen and a built-in carrying handle. Plus, both models will offer integral lithium-ion rechargeable batteries for true portability.

Having played with the prototypes of both models, I was impressed with the room-filling sound of both, though I greatly preferred the larger model, thanks to its bigger touchscreen, and much more substantial sound output. The handle and industrial design of the larger model is more distinctive as well.

Vizio has yet to announce pricing or a release date for the Portable Smart Audio series yet, but knowing how the company always has offered strong value for the money, I’m sure they’ll be priced well. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get our hands on a review unit down the road, and I can provide more in-depth impressions then.

LG SoundPlate Puts the Sound Under Your TV

While there are plenty of soundbars available for improving the sound of your home theater, most of them have to sit in front of your TV set or hang above or below it on the wall. The LG SoundPlate takes a different approach, by sitting underneath your flat screen TV’s base.

    lg sound plate 620x344magnify

The latest generation of the SoundPlate, the LAB540W measures just 1.56-inches-tall, and can handle TVs measuring from 32 to 55 inches on top of it – though LG hasn’t announced a weight limit yet. This design allows the speaker to have a much deeper enclosure for improved sound, plus it provides an integrated 3D compatible Blu-ray player and amplifier, which makes for a much cleaner look than if you had a standalone Blu-ray player and a home theater receiver.

The all-in-one system offers a total of 320 watts, and is a “4.1″ system despite having no rear speakers – so I imagine that it offers some kind of virtual surround tech. For room-filling bass, it uses a wireless subwoofer.

There’s no word yet on pricing or a release date for the LAB540W SoundPlate.
