Researchers Found a Way To Make Announcements Quieter But Clearer

There’s an endless list of annoyances that make air travel unenjoyable, the least of which being the nonstop blaring airport announcements you have to endure while waiting for your flight. So hats off to a team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland who’ve developed a filter that can make speech blasted over a loudspeaker easier to understand over background noise, but also quieter.

Rapper Flo Rida—who you may know from such places as Samsung TV events, clubs that can’t even handle him right now, and NBA Finals games he is kind of not invited to—is selling some weird DJ toy called Beamz® By Flo. From what we can tell from watching this video advertisement three times, it plays from a selection of pre-programmed songs when you strum some red lasers.

Raspberry Pi gets audiophile credentials thanks to RaspyFi Linux distro

Raspberry Pi gets audiophile credentials thanks to RaspyFi Linux distro

Raspberry Pi and the Raspbmc OS already make a solid combo as a media center, but if you encounter music-related limitations then it may be worth giving the RaspyFi distro (v1.0) a shot instead. In addition to supporting Apple AirPlay and a range of lossless file types, this audio-centric form of Linux also works with a long list of external USB DACs, including asynchronous playback, so you can avoid relying your Pi’s tiny stock DAC and amplifier. RaspyFi’s other big feature is that it comes with its own web-based UI (shown in the video after the break), which ought to make it easy to control playback of both local and streamed content (such as web radio or Spotify) from virtually any browser-equipped device on your network. A quick health warning, though: audiophilia is a slippery slope that may subsequently cause you to develop an unhealthy suspicion towards your Pi’s standard power supply.

Kim Dotcom Teases “Baboom” Music Service

Kim Dotcom Teases Baboom Music ServiceWe knew that Kim Dotcom, the man behind the MEGA service, was working on a music service and today Dotcom has unveiled the name of his upcoming product which he is calling “Baboom”. While the full specifics of this new service has yet to be unveiled, along with pricing plans, Dotcom did provide a bit of insight into the upcoming service, claiming that it will give artists unprecedented control over their work and that an entire career can actually be managed through it. Sounds pretty ambitious, but we guess we will just have to wait and see.

According to Torrent Freak, the service will be ad supported at the start, although unsurprisingly it is expected that an ad free version will be made available as well through a subscription model. According to Dotcom, he believes that the free music model will reduce piracy, while at the same time providing compensation to artists whose music is being streamed or downloaded. No word on when Baboom will be launched or how much it will cost, but what do you guys think? Will Baboom be able to stand out in a crowd of music service providers, such as Spotify, Rdio, Pandora, and etc.?

Jony Ive Creates Solid Gold EarPods For Charity Auction

Jony Ive Creates Solid Gold EarPods For Charity AuctionGold plated products can come off sometimes as being a little ostentatious, but we guess there are some who love such finishes and if you’re one of them and have some money to spare, perhaps these pair of solid gold EarPods might be an item you’d want to bid on. These Apple EarPods were designed and plated in gold in a collaborative effort between Apple’s design guru, Jony Ive, and industrial designer Marc Newson. The earphones will be coated in 18k solid gold and unfortunately apart from the new paint gold, it remains the same accessory that comes bundled with every iPhone out there.

The accessory will be auctioned off on the 23rd of November in New York and will be part of the Project (RED) charity organized by U2’s Bono. According to Ive, “Each piece represents the value of thoughtful design. What we create for each other is not only a comment on our culture, but of course in many ways defines it.”  There will be other items auctioned off during the event as well, although we’re not sure how much these gold plated EarPods will fetch. Anyone have an idea how much someone might pay for these? Might go with the gold iPhone 5S!

Orb Audio Unveils New Speakers And Subwoofers For The Audiophile

Orb Audio Unveils New Speakers And Subwoofers For The AudiophileBeing an audiophile can be quite an expensive hobby since audiophile grade speakers, cables, subwoofers, and amplifiers can cost a lot of money,  but if you’re looking to start from somewhere, Orb Audio has announced a new line of speakers that will mark the company’s 10th anniversary. These speakers include the Mod1X, Mod2X, and the Mod4X, along with two compact subwoofer systems, the subMINI and the subONE.

One of the more interesting aspects of the speakers is how it can be customized, allowing users to add more “orbs” to the setup, thus increasing its output. For example if you’re using it in a small room, a pair of orbs should do the trick, but for those looking to deck out a home theater system or a larger living room, you can always add more orbs, although it will cost you, but like we said since these speakers are customizable, those looking to get into the audiophile hobby can start off small.

Next up are the subONE and subMINI subwoofers, with the former sporting a 200-watt amplifier, while the latter will be a slightly more compact version that will feature a 100-watt amplifier. Orb Audio has a bunch of packages for customers to choose from, depending on your needs, so if you’d like to check it out hit up Orb Audio’s website for the details.

Orb Audio celebrates 10 year anniversary with Mod1X speaker, subOne and subMini subwoofers

    DNP Orb Audio

Orb Audio clearly subscribes to the “do it right the first time” school of thought: Since 2003 it has released exactly one product, the Mod1 speaker. That changes today, because the funky modular audio system is getting both a refresh, and pair of subwoofers to celebrate the firm’s 10-year anniversary. The Mod1X satellites sport a new aluminum driver the company says can handle higher power and has improved midrange and high frequency performance. For aesthetics, they’re available in black, white, “hammered Earth,” polished steel and antiqued copper and bronze finishes.

If you like your bass down low, Orb has you covered here too. The subONE is a 200-watt subwoofer squeezed into a cabinet measuring less than 12 inches on each side, and it features anti-clipping and thermal overload circuits as well as auto voltage-sensing tech — just in case you use it abroad. A small room doesn’t mean you don’t need big sound, so it’s nice to see Orb address that with the 100-watt subMINI that’s tucked into a dual ported 9-inch cabinet. Sure, an $889 starting price for surround sound is a little pricey, but, unlike other aspects of your home theater, good speakers can last a lifetime.
