Empire Steampunk Speakers: For Dapper Audiophiles Only

There’s something that continues to intrigue me about Steampunk style. I think it’s the idea that technology could be driven by steam power instead of electricity. And while these speakers aren’t actually driven by steam, they’re still pretty amazing.

steampunk speakers 1

This pair of Empire Steam speakers was handmade by Airhammer Industries. Each octagonal cabinet is made from MDF with a copper veneer, copper edging, and brass and bronze details. They’re extremely substantial, as is evidenced by the large 1.5″ thick granite top on each one, and an approximate weight of 125 pounds per speaker.

Inside of each 36-inch-tall speaker is a pair of Vifa 1″ silk dome tweeters, a 5″ Pyle midrange, and a 15″ Goldwood downward-firing subwoofer for cranking out the bass while you watch The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen on your steam-powered television. Maximum power per speaker is 400 Watts RMS @ 8 ohms.

While these speakers are glorious, they’re not exactly cheap. All of this craftsmanship and audio tech will set you back a whopping $12,600 (USD) for the pair. I wonder how much they would have cost back in the 19th century?

Turtle Beach Call Of Duty: Ghosts Limited Edition Headsets Pricing Revealed

Turtle Beach Call Of Duty: Ghosts Limited Edition Headsets Pricing RevealedEarlier this year at E3, the showfloor had plenty of “stars”, and it can get pretty difficult trying to filter out all of the “noise”, which is why it is always important to have someone on the ground to do the running and figure out just what is cool to share with the masses. Headsets come and go, but sometimes, there are just some limited edition versions of a particular device that deserve special mention – case in point, the Call of Duty: Ghosts limited edition headsets that hail from Turtle Beach. We are glad to say that the final design, packaging and pricing for the Call of Duty: Ghosts limited edition headsets have been revealed, where you will find a black leather headband with blue stitching, a bone-colored body, as well as the distinctive Ghosts mask graphic appear on the speaker plates.

The Call of Duty: Ghosts Ear Force Spectre happens to be a special edition of the tournament-grade SEVEN Series headset, where it will boast of an in-line amp so that you can control it using your fingertips. As for the Call of Duty: Ghosts Ear Force Phantom, it comes across as a wireless Dolby surround sound headset complete with a programmable dual-stage audio processor. Last but not least, the Call of Duty: Ghosts Ear Force Shadow is an amplified stereo headset accompanied by an in-line amp, and all three will retail for $199.95, $299.95 and $99.95, respectively, as they arrive in stores later this October.

    DIY Solar-powered Boombox: The Boominator

Redditor anders202 built a boombox that’s perfect for summer parties. It’s called the Boominator, a solar-powered boombox that was designed by diyAudio member Saturnus back in 2007. Unlike its battery-devouring ancestors, the Boominator not only runs on free energy, it also gathers and converts enough solar power to charge mobile devices.

    boominator by anders202

Anders202′s Boominator is powered by an Indeed TA2020 2 x 12W amplifier and two 10W solar panels. It has two P.Audio HP-10W subwoofers and two Monacor MPT-001 piezo-electric tweeters on each side, so it can make people sweat whether it’s behind or in front of them. Anders202 says that with eight hours of sunlight, the Boominator can play for six hours at 100% volume and still have enough power left in its 12v battery to fully charge an iPhone 3 times. The only downside to the Boominator is that it weighs about 66 pounds Then again, I weigh over twice as much as the Boominator and I’m not even half as useful.

Check out the Boominator Wiki, Saturnus’ original guide or anders202′s image-filled walkthrough if you want to make your own Boominator.

Mad Catz Ships TRITTON Kunai Stereo Gaming Headset For PC And Mac

Mad Catz Ships TRITTON Kunai Stereo Gaming Headset For PC And MacIt was last year when we brought you word that Mad Catz had started to ship its Kunai stereo gaming headset for both the PS3 and PS Vita, this after knowing that it plays nice with the Nintendo Wii U, too. Well, how about folks who tend to get gaming done on the Windows PC platform as well as on Apple’s Mac? Well, fret not as Mad Catz has just announced that they will be shipping the TRITTON Kunai Stereo Gaming Headset to the two mentioned platforms.

First announced at E3 earlier this year (June 2013), the TRITTON Kunai Stereo Gaming Headset will come with striking aesthetics, 40mm Neodymium speakers as well as an in-line remote which will offer easy access to volume and chat controls. According to Darren Richardson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., “Our TRITTON Kunai range proved popular at E3 thanks to its clean aesthetics and impressive audio. We are confident that passionate PC and Mac gamers will appreciate the performance and value synonymous with the brand.” You will be able to choose from gloss black, gloss white, and gloss red shades – not exactly my cup of tea due to the amount of fingerprints that they are going to collect in the long run! bēm x The Public Zoo Bluetooth Speakers: Cute Critters and Happy Sounds

It seems there are a squillion different Bluetooth speakers on the market these days, so how do you choose which one to buy? You could pick one because of its size or sound quality, or you could just pick one because it looks cute. Fortunately, these speakers from bēm and The Public Zoo satisfy all of the above criteria.

    bem public zoo speaker 3

These loveable little speaker cubes measure just 2.35″ x 2.35″ x 2.5″, and are embellished on three sides by the whimsical art of illustrator Han L. Lee. I can’t decide which of the three designs is my favorite, but I think I have to go with the panda bear with the eyepatch. Yes, the eyepatch has eyes of its own. How goofy is that?

    bem public zoo speaker 2
The little bēm speaker connects with any Bluetooth device, and in my testing I found it easy to set up and provided very good sound quality for its size. I had to crank it up to its highest volume level before I experienced distortion, and at reasonable volume levels, the little speaker can fill a small room or office with its omnidirectional sound. It’s even got pretty decent bass thanks to a sound-conductive rubber pad on the bottom. You can recharge the speaker via its Mini USB port, and it also has a aux 3.5mm input for wired gadgets.

So put on your eyepatch and red bowtie and head over to bēm, where you can get The Public Zoo Bluetooth Speaker for $69.99(USD).
