Exclusive: HP Photosmart eStation C510 is Android-powered Zeus / Zeen, may not run Gmail or Market apps

We saw it this weekend for a fleeting moment, but thankfully one handy reader sent us copies of the product page for HP’s Photosmart eStation C510, which we can now confirm is the Zeus / Zeen printer and detachable tablet combination we caught wind of back in early August — and we’ve got some more details. Bad news first: as of a month ago, the Gmail app was missing and there was no support for Android Market, meaning the Zeen might not be an official “with Google” Android tablet like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. (The product page conspicuously lacks any mention of the OS, so we’re thinking Android might simply be the hidden-away base layer for the TouchSmart UI, making this thing super boring.) It does have the default Android browser and at least some custom apps for printing pictures from Facebook, Yahoo, and Snapfish preloaded, but we don’t know about anything else. Major bummer, but we’re told it shouldn’t be too hard for the community at large to root the sucker. Beta testing begins this month, so that all might change before the projected September 20th release. Here’s what else we know so far:

  • The Zeen is a capacitive tablet running HP’s TouchSmart skin on top of Android 2.1 — it won’t get shifted to webOS, and it’s not clear if it’ll get upped to Froyo before launch given the development time required. It has capacitive touch buttons, an SD card slot, video support, and at least some prototypes have cameras with a special webcam app installed.
  • We’re told TouchSmart will be locked in, but we don’t know how deep that’ll go — right now the standard Android homescreen is still accessible. That’s supposedly going away, so don’t get your hopes up for any native Gmail / Angry Birds use.
  • E-reading is a major focus, and the Zeen has “significant” integration with the Barnes & Noble Nook bookstore and ecosystem. Makes sense, as the Nook itself is based on Android, and being able to print e-books from the Zeen would be a huge differentiator — and a great way for HP to sell more ink.
  • The touchscreen is apparently not very accurate at all, and we’re told the overall experience is far less satisfying than a competent Android phone. Don’t expect this to replace your Droid Incredible for all at-home use.
  • The Zeen will come in two configurations: a $399 bundle with a new printer called Zeus and as a standalone unit for an unknown price. The Zeus has its own “basic” control setup, but when the Zeen is docked it provides a rich interface to the printing functions — presumably a web-connected interface like the one HP’s been moving towards with other printers. (Note: the product page listed $399.99 but provided no indication what price the Zeen might go for solo.)
  • Ship date is an estimated September 20th but due to some testing issues this may be pushed back.

Borders Drops Kobo, Libre Price: The War Rages On

What a time to be alive! Not so much for the political contention or the artistic, technological, or scientific breakthrough. No friends, when you speak to your grandchildren about what it was like to be alive in the early 21st century, the conversational will almost certainly revolve around that fact that you survived the eBook pricing wars.

Borders today announced that it has dropped the price of its Kobo and Libre e-readers to $129 and $99, down from $149 and $119, respectively.The drops are the latest in what has been a rather hot summer for eBook reader pricing.

Back in June, Barnes & Noble dropped the price of its 3G Nook from $259 to $199. Amazon then marked the Kindle down from $259 to $189. That same week, Borders announced that it would be including $10 in Borders Bucks and a $20 gift card with the purchase of a Kobo, later insisting that its decision was unrelated to drops on the Kindle and Nook.

Amazon, of course, introduced a brand new Kindle in July, pricing the 3G version at $189 and the Wi-Fi-only model at $139.

Despite Reports, BN Nook Competes Just Fine, Thank You

You might think it was already dead, but sales for the Barnes & Noble Nook (both B&N-branded hardware and multi-platform software apps) are booming.

The company’s web stores are doing great, too: B&N has a bigger share of the market in digital books (an estimated 20 percent) than it has in physical books.

That’s pretty good considering the Nook’s only been available for nine months, and the company still generates more revenue selling hardcovers and paperbacks than anyone, including Amazon.

Surprised? It’s easy to think about e-reading as a two-horse race, with Amazon’s austere text-centric Kindle facing off against Apple’s “magical” iPad, like PCs vs Macs or Protestants vs Catholics. And it’s true, Barnes & Noble lost money this past quarter, partly because it’s still sorting out its messy relations with its investors.

But Barnes & Noble is for real, and isn’t going anywhere. In the religious analogy, the Nook might be, I don’t know, Judaism, trying to adapt to a newer world while holding onto its traditional community.

Barnes & Noble has consistently gone for a hybrid strategy: providing touch and text, tightly integrating e-sales with its existing stores while also selling the Nook at Best Buy, letting its books be read on the Nook as well as other platforms. B&N’s apps for PC and Mac are arguably best-in-class (bonus points, too, for getting its Mac app out way before Amazon’s). The company is doubling down on (and rebranding) its apps for mobile devices. And it’s drawing on a solid base of neighborhood customer/members and university bookstores. Even as Amazon cuts its prices and diversifies its models to match the Nook, it can’t match Barnes & Noble’s deep reach into the real world.

According to B&N, its members with Nooks have increased their spending by 20%. The company’s building and staffing Nook boutiques in its stores. The idea is that you’ll go buy the Nook in the store, learn how to use it in the store, browse through titles (for free) in the store. And by the way, you might also want to buy some coffee, have lunch, pick up a photo album — all goods with better margins than books.

If the Kindle offers the promise of books anywhere at once and nowhere in particular, the Nook keeps alive the idea that books have a place. And the best place, Barnes & Noble thinks, is in one of its stores.

Amazon Granted Patent for Dual-Screen E-Reader

Amazon has been granted what appears to be a fairly broad patent for an e-book reader with a secondary LCD display. The patent was filed for the early version of the Kindle, which featured an LCD scroller on the side.

But if you follow the e-book reader market at all, odds are that an entirely different reader has already sprung to mind: The Nook. Barnes and Noble’s reader is a dual-screen device, featuring a large e-book display and a smaller LCD one. Here is the language fom the original patent application, courtesy of Engadget,

A handheld electronic device comprising: a housing; an electronic paper display disposed in the housing and having a first surface area; and a liquid crystal display (LCD) disposed in the housing proximate the electronic paper display, the LCD having a second surface area that is smaller than the first surface area of the electronic paper display.

So, is Amazon entrenched in the e-reader battle enough to sue? No one but the company can say for sure, though things have certainly been heating up in the space as of late, thanks in no small part to the three-way price wars being waged between Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders.

Looks like the battle for e-reader dominance between Amazon and Barnes & Noble could soon expand beyond the recent spate of price drops and into the courtroom as well: the USPTO just granted a 2006 Amazon patent on e-readers with secondary LCD displays (like the original Kindle’s scroller-navigation panel), and several of the claims are potentially broad enough to cover the Nook and many other devices with both electronic paper and LCD displays. What’s more, Amazon agreed not to file for any corresponding foreign patents during the four-year approval process and thus wasn’t required to publish the patent application — meaning this is likely a complete surprise to the entire industry. Yeah, it’s juicy. Here’s one of the claims that could cause problems for Barnes & Noble — in plain English, it potentially covers any device with both an electronic paper display and a second smaller LCD display next to it.

That’s pretty sweeping — it doesn’t take much to look at the Nook and see that it has both an electronic ink display and a smaller LCD located next to it. Now, we don’t know if Amazon has any plans to actually sue anyone over this patent yet, but we’re guessing there’s a flurry of legal activity happening at all the major e-reader manufacturers right now, and we’re definitely curious to see what the fallout looks like — remember, Barnes & Noble is already involved in a trade secret dispute over the Nook with Spring Design, which claims that B&N saw its Alex reader under NDA and then copied it for the Nook. That case isn’t scheduled to wrap up before November, so there’s a chance B&N and Spring Design could end up simultaneously fighting each other in one case while taking on Amazon as allies in another, which would be… messy. We’ll see what happens — while we’ve no doubt Barnes & Noble will put up a serious fight if it comes to that, we’re curious to see if the shift away from e-reader development to general-use tablets hastens as the market contracts, margins shrink, and the cost of litigation becomes prohibitive. The ball’s very definitely in Amazon’s court now — stay tuned.

Amazon Cuts Price of the Kindle

The e-reader price wars is on. Amazon has cut the price of its Kindle e-book reader to $190 from $260 earlier. Amazon’s move comes in response to Barnes & Noble’s price cut on the Nook earlier Monday.

The Kindle will still be slightly more expensive than the basic version of the Nook. A Wi-Fi only version of the Nook is now available for $150, while a 3G model will cost $200.

With the latest round of price wars, the distinction between e-readers and tablets is also becoming clear. Tablets and E Ink-based reading devices are likely to co-exist by targeting different groups of consumers based on their purchasing power, the extent of interactivity they need and their reading patterns.

That means two sets of products: Tablets with color displays and lots of features that cost $400 or more, and inexpensive black-and-white E Ink-powered e-readers that will soon be available for $150 or less.

Despite the launch of tablets such as Apple’s iPad, e-book readers continue to be popular among consumers. About seven million e-readers will be sold this year, estimates Forrester. A recent poll by consumer electronics search website Retrevo showed 45 percent of casual readers–those who read one book every few months–say they plan to buy an iPad now instead of an e-reader. But among avid readers–those who read more than five books a month–only 14 percent say they will go for an iPad over an e-reader.

“In other words Apple will still attract many e-reader buyers but Kindle owners might buy more books,” says Retrevo in its blog post. The web site polled 1000 people through an independent panel.

That’s good news for Amazon and Barnes & Noble who are betting on sales of more digital books. E-readers such as Kindle and Nook will help them in that goal.

After Nook Announcement, Amazon Drops Price of Kindle to $189

That was fast. Hours after Barnes & Noble introduced a Wi-Fi only version of its Nook e-reader and dropped the price of its 3G device to $199, Amazon responded by dropping the price of its Kindle e-book reader from $259 to $189.

Amazon’s Web site has been updated, and the cheaper version of the Kindle is for sale now. The Kindle DX is still priced at $489.

Amazon said that customers who bought a Kindle that was shipped in the last 30 days are eligible to receive the price difference as a credit.

Barnes & Noble said it will offer a $10 refund to customers who purchased a Nook in the last 14 days – the difference between the new Nook price and a recent promotional price. B&N has recently been offering $50 gift cards with every Nook purchase, which could be used toward the price of the e-reader.

The discounted Kindle e-book can hold up to 1,500 books, includes 3G capabilities, and includes a six-inch E Ink screen.

The Kindle is also sold at brick-and-mortar Target stores. A Target spokeswoman confirmed that the Kindle will also be available at Target for $189.

No doubt feeling some heat from added competition in the e-book reader market thanks to new devices like the Apple iPad, Barnes & Noble announced today a lower-priced version of its Nook. The new Nook Wi-Fi dumps its predecessor’s 3G capabilities in favor of a lower price: $149.

The Nook Wi-Fi looks nearly identical to its predecessor, save for the color of its back, which has been changed from gray to white. The device is also slightly lighter, down to 11.6 ounces, from 12.1 ounces. The price of the Nook 3G has also been dropped, down from $259 to $199.

Barnes & Noble said it will offer a $10 refund to customers who purchased a Nook in the last 14 days – the difference between the new Nook price and a recent promotional price. B&N has recently been offering $50 gift cards with every Nook purchase, which could be used toward the price of the e-reader.

Barnes & Noble has also rolled out the latest version of the Nook software. The update enhances the device’s Wi-Fi connections.
