Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Teaser Shows Every Doc to Ever Wield the Sonic Screwdriver

If you’re a fan of the BBC science-fiction series Doctor Who you probably know that the series has been on the air for 50 years. That’s a long time for any television show to be on the air and I imagine much of the success comes from the premise in the series allowing the actor who plays the Doctor to be replaced on a whim. If viewers find the current Doctor boring, you simply kill him off and replace him.

I mentioned not long ago that the BBC had found some very early episodes from the franchise that were believed to have been lost and planned to show those episodes again. While we wait for those episodes, BBC will be airing a special 75 min. long episode called The Day of the Doctor to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show. That episode is set to air on November 23 and in anticipation the BBC has released a teaser trailer.

Before you get too excited, you need to be aware that the teaser trailer has no footage at all from the special anniversary episode. Rather, the teaser shows every actor that has ever played Doctor Who all the way back to the beginning of the series. The trailer is also the first time that original Timelord William Hartnell has ever been seen in high-definition and color.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Trailer Debuts

It’s difficult for many TV shows make it through a few episodes these days. Television networks in the US are always keen on ensuring significant viewership or they’ll axe a new show before it even has a chance to gain a following. It’s rare for a show to make it 15 or 20 years. It’s […]

Doctor Who missing episodes to appear restored on BBC

One of the most fanatically followed television series of all time, Doctor Who, will be given a jolt of nostalgia soon as the BBC can confirm the recovery of a mass of episodes previously thought lost to the vaults of time. This suggestion comes from the BBC itself, suggesting that a total of 106 episodes […]

106 Early Doctor Who Episodes Found at TV Station in Ethiopia

I’ll admit that despite my love for science fiction and things geeky I’ve never been a fan of Doctor Who. I tried watching the show and I’ve never succeeded in making it through the first commercial break. If you are a big fan of the show you may be excited to hear that a number of episodes from early in the series have been rediscovered – some of which were believed to have been lost forever.

who1

As the story goes, when BBC purged a bunch of old footage they trashed some who early Doctor Who episodes featuring William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. An incredible 106 of these episodes were discovered at the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency.

Among the rediscovered episodes are several that were only on the air one time. Those episodes include The Crusade, The Enemy of the World, and The Ice Warriors. Indications are that BBC sold the episodes to the Ethiopian television agency before destroying the originals. The BBC is reportedly currently in the process of having those copies returned. Exactly what the BBC will do with these episodes is unknown, presumably they’ll be shown again – or sold on disc – to fans of the series.

BBC explains why it took so long to add downloads to iPlayer for Android

The BBC shows how it tests iPlayer downloads for Android

Wondering why the BBC brought iPlayer downloads to just 11 Android devices, several months after iOS users got their turn? The broadcaster has just explained itself through a blog post detailing the Android app’s testing process. Like Netflix, the BBC had to focus its support on a handful of Android products in order to launch on time; this supports what we’ve heard from our own sources, who suggest that iPlayer development is normally arduous. To address as much hardware as possible on a tight schedule, the network conducted frequent, iterative tests that guaranteed compatibility relatively quickly. While the end result still leaves a lot of viewers without downloads, the BBC suggests that its testing process introduced the feature sooner than would have otherwise been possible. Whether or not you’re happy with the finished product, you can check out the corporation’s full methodology at the source link.

BBC iPlayer Downloads replaces old Desktop client for a cleaner, simpler user experience

BBC iPlayer Downloads replaces old Desktop client for a cleaner, simpler user experience

Those of you across the pond with access to BBC’s iPlayer Desktop client may have been frustrated with the offline video experience. There were frequent Adobe AIR updates that caused incompatibility issues and features that were either mostly ignored by users for their complexity (i.e., Series Record) or inaccessible offline, like Live TV and Radio. Well, consider that the past because the Beeb’s introducing a new client, BBC iPlayer Downloads, which sidesteps the need for Adobe AIR and cuts out those former features in favor of a unfussy UI focused on downloading programs. To that end, downloads will no longer be made available in .wmv format (due to cost reasons) and are now hosted only on episode pages to keep the experience consistent with companion mobile apps. Fans of the old Player will still be able to view any existing downloaded shows until their expiration date, but, from today forward, that client will no longer be available on the BBC’s iPlayer site. Embrace the future, video junkies… you have no choice.
