WSJ: BlackBerry mulling spinning off BBM subsidiary, considering desktop version

We’ll say this, BlackBerry looks to be considering everything when it comes to pulling in revenue from its messaging service. False alarms aside, the company already let slip that BlackBerry Messenger is on its way to iOS and Android some time this season, and now according to The Wall Street Journal‘s usual gang of anonymous sources “familiar with the matter,” the Canadian company is thinking of spinning off the service as a more independent subsidiary carrying the straight-forward name, BBM Inc. ahead of a potential sale. A desktop version of the app may be on the docket as well, according to the article — BlackBerry, naturally, only reconfirmed its Android and iOS plans, refusing to comment on anything else.

Samsung Ghana Begins Advertising BBM For Android

If you’re an iOS or Android user and you are looking to communicate with friends on BlackBerry devices who refuse to get alternative means of messaging, chances are you can’t wait to get your hands on the BBM app which is scheduled to arrive on the iOS and Android platforms in the near future. So far the user guides have been leaked suggesting that the release could be close at hand, and it looks like over in certain regions, Samsung has begun advertising the app as well. It seems that Samsung and BlackBerry might have inked some sort of deal in which BBM will come preloaded on their Galaxy devices, which might explain why Samsung is spending their resources in advertising the app.

The video above is one of the advertisements that Samsung has begun putting out, although it seems to have originated from Samsung Ghana who have not only uploaded a video, but a photo on their Facebook page as well. Unfortunately there is no word on when exactly the app is due to be released, but last we heard a September release was in the cards. In any case check back with us during September for more updates. In the meantime who else is excited for BBM arriving on iOS and Android?

BBM iOS And Android User Guides Leaked

BBM iOS And Android User Guides Leaked

Earlier this year BlackBerry announced that it is finally opening up BlackBerry Messenger to other platforms, iOS and Android to be precise. BBM used to be one of the biggest selling points for BlackBerry devices, but now the messaging service has been eclipsed by competitors such as Viber and WhatsApp. Up till now BBM has only been exclusive to the company’s own smartphones. Since its smartphones are not performing as well as they used to in the market, perhaps the company will be able to steal a few customers after they get a taste of BBM on the aforementioned platforms. Ahead of its impending launch, the user guides for BBM on iOS and Android have been leaked.

BlackBerry said that it would release the messenger on these platforms this summer. Rumor has it that the release will take place next month. It was recently reported that the company has already rolled out the apps to a select group of beta testers on both iOS and Android. The user guides won’t be of much use to you if you’ve carried a BlackBerry in the past and are well accustomed to BBM. They’ve aimed towards people who’ve never used BBM before. The guides contain information about BBM PINs, BlackBerry IDs and more. Do check them out if you plan on using BBM on your iOS or Android device once it releases.

BBM Android and iOS user guides suggest launch imminent

While the BlackBerry brand may not be doing as well as they’d hoped with the launch of BlackBerry 10 and the devices it runs on, an impending BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) app for iOS and Android still appears all the rage. This app has been announced for both Apple mobile products and Google’s Android, but no […]

Another Fake BBM Android App Spotted On Google Play

Another Fake BBM Android App Spotted On Google Play

We’re sure that BlackBerry, iOS, and Android users are aware that BlackBerry’s BBM will be making its way onto iOS and Android before the end of summer, and while BlackBerry has yet to share a specific release date, we have seen leaked screenshots of the app in action on Android. However it seems that in the wake of the hype, fake BBM apps for Android were spotted and it looks like yet another one has made its way onto the Google Play store. Calling itself “BBM”, it was created by BBM Droid and it actually costs users money if they wanted to purchase and download the app.

Given that this is not an official app, we’re surprised there are some out there who have actually bought and downloaded the app. According to the app’s description, it tries to “educate” users on how to “properly” install the app which basically requires the user to download another app. We’re not sure what exactly the app does when it installs itself on your phone, but it definitely is not worth finding out, so stay clear! BlackBerry will announce when they officially launch the app, so anything you see before then is almost certainly a fake, so be sure to check back with us regularly as we will keep you updated on the app’s status.

Samsung Teases BBM For Android As BlackBerry Further Telegraphs Its BBM Platform Play

    bbm-money

Samsung is using the upcoming launch of BBM for Android (still just “coming soon”) to promote its Galaxy devices, Samsung App Store and Messaging Hub in a new release targeting the African market. BlackBerry is in on the push, with the two entering into an agreement to jointly market the service to African mobile customers. It’s a hint at what BlackBerry wants to do with BBM, now that it’s opening access to its proprietary messaging platform.

BBM has long been a staple in terms of one-to-one communication on mobile devices, and recently BlackBerry debuted BBM Groups, which allow for one-to-many broadcasts using the same messaging tools BBM users are used to. Especially in some key developing markets, including Indonesia and Africa, BBM has underpinned not only communication, but local commerce and business as well as a pretty much universal means of communication that’s more reliable, more affordable and potentially more trustworthy than SMS.

The tag-team promotional efforts are telling: they show that not only is BlackBerry releasing its messenger for users on iOS and Android, it’s going to be actively involved in promoting that availability, even where it seems to run counter to its own interests. Samsung benefits here by being able to offer users new to its platform a familiar and trusted means of communication, giving them even more reason to continue to migrate away from dedicated BlackBerry devices; what BlackBerry gains isn’t so immediately apparent.

BlackBerry is looking at a dwindling user base, both for its devices and across its services, so what it gains from the deal is access to a growth market. Giving up the BBM platform advantage may cause some to scratch their heads, but it’s not much of an advantage anymore, which is clear from the dwindling BlackBerry market share. At this point, it matters little if the company adds fuel to the fire by expanding availability to iOS and Android devices.

In terms of potential upside, BlackBerry could lock in more users for a platform that could become very valuable in terms of data, advertising and other initiatives like BBM Money. If, in partnering with competitors to reach more users, it makes it easier for a few platform-jumpers, that’s a small price to pay at this stage in the game.

BBM For Galaxy Devices To Be Available From Samsung App Store In Africa

BBM For Galaxy Devices To Be Available From Samsung App Store In Africa

A couple of months ago BlackBerry announced that its popular BlackBerry Messenger would be making its way over to iOS and Android this summer. As of now it is not known when the Canadian manufacturer is going to release BBM for these platforms. We’ve seen a few leaks, recently we saw the splash screen of the BBM app for Android being pictured in the wild. Samsung has made the first announcement related to BBM on other platforms. It says that the messenger will be available for all Galaxy devices through the Google Play Store as well as through Samsung App store in Africa.

Granted that this announcement is specifically related to Africa, but it is the first of its kind. Moreover, BlackBerry’s major market share currently exists in emerging markets such as Africa, so its no surprise to see a separate announcement for that particular region. As per Samsung’s press release, BBM on Galaxy devices will offer chat, group messaging and BBM Groups. No release date has been mentioned in this press release, though its likely that the release may take place this month.

BlackBerry Messenger For Android Spotted In The Wild

BlackBerry Messenger For Android Spotted In The WildEarlier this morning, we did bring you a glimpse of BBM for Android in the form of a splash screen, and here we are with additional views of BlackBerry Messenger for Android thanks to the folks over at BlackBerryOS.com. After all, it was mentioned a couple of months back that BlackBerry Messenger is headed for iOS as well as the Android platform ‘before the end of the summer’, so it is not surprising to see additional screenshots of BlackBerry Messenger making their way around the Internet, and I am quite sure that these are a whole lot more legit than previous sightings.

Apart from the sign-in page that was spotted on a Samsung Galaxy S3, the other images which were leaked out did depict the actual app itself. Apparently, BBM for Android will make use of the left-side drawer in pretty much the same vein as that of the BlackBerry Hub app on BB10, while sporting menu buttons across the bottom that will hopefully make it easier to navigate to your contacts, groups and settings. Hopefully BBM for Android will be released officially, and soon!

BlackBerry begins BBM beta for Android (update: official comment)

    Image

Blackberry promised us back at BBLive that we’d see BBM on Android and iOS devices before the end of the summer. Well, we’ve hit the dog days of August, and while most of those devices are still BBM-free, it appears a select few Androids are finally getting to beta test the app. Blackberry OS reports that email invites are rolling out now to folks registered with BlackBerry’s Beta Zone to test out BBM. Other than registration, users simply need a handset running Android 4.0 and up and they’ll be messaging across the great platform divide in no time. We’ve reached out to the good people at BlackBerry for comment on the matter, and will update this post when we hear back.

Update: We just got an official comment on the beta rollout, and it turns out the it had a limited number of slots, which have all been claimed:

BlackBerry has begun internal testing of BBM on Android and iOS devices. We invited our employees to nominate friends and family to participate in a limited Android beta. Those slots are now full. For more information, please visit www.blackberry.com/bbm.
