BBM Channel Subscriptions Doubled After Cross Platform ReleaseFor those unfamiliar with BBM Channels, you could almost think of them as being somewhat similar to Facebook Pages, where individuals or companies can setup Channels that BBM users can subscribe to. Given BBM’s userbase, that’s a lot of potential users that companies could get access to and keep up to date via Channel Updates and more.

So with the release of BBM for iOS and Android, has this impacted Channels? Well it turns out that it did. In fact it seems that Channel subscribers for certain brands have actually doubled since the release of the cross-platform version of BBM. (more…)

    BlackBerry Explains Ads For BBMAs we reported the other day, BlackBerry appeared to be testing a beta for their BBM Android app that would introduce ads into the messaging service. Based on the description, it sounded like the ads weren’t intrusive as they would appear as Channel Updates.

    This is versus more intrusive ads found in free games and apps where banners might appear at the top of the app or have a full popup ad display every now and then.     In an interview with CNBC earlier today, BlackBerry CEO John Chen remarked that he would sell BlackBerry Messenger if someone came to him with a $19 billion offer, he’d “definitely sell,” and “recommend the board to take it.” Before people start flaming him out, its not that Chen was touting some absurd valuation of BBM which we all know isn’t worth $19 billion, BlackBerry’s entire market cap sits just above $5 billion. The $19 billion figure has been raising eyebrows recently because that’s what Facebook paid for WhatsApp.

    BBM Could Be Used To Facilitate Payments

    BlackBerry’s ship has been in troubled waters for the past few years now, and the waters don’t appear to be calming down any time soon. One of the company’s divisions that’s not bleeding money like devices and hardware is BlackBerry Messenger, which has actually experience some growth after it was opened up to Android and iOS last year. The company continues to add more features across all platforms and has also committed to launching BBM for Windows Phone this summer. It also has plans to branch into mobile payments, at least that’s what BlackBerry enterprise unit president John Sims tells Re/code.
