Nintendo partners with Best Buy so you can play unreleased Wii U games in store during E3

There’s nothing more frustrating than watching a product or service get announced, then having to wait an age to try it out. Nintendo hears that, and has announced via Nintendo Direct, that during E3 week, Best Buy will have playable demos of as-yet released Wii U games in 100 stores across the US and Canada. Given that no one was likely expecting any new hardware from the firm, it’s clear the gaming stalwart is looking for other ways to stir-up some interest. There’s no mention of titles, so we’re left to assume they’d be the games announced at the show. Either way, scratch out that week in June to make sure you find out first hand. Scrub right to the end of the video past the break to see the announcement for yourself.

Nintendo Partners With Best Buy To Allow Fans Access To Unreleased Wii U Games During E3 2013

Nintendo may not be holding one of its global press conferences at this year’s E3, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it should be seen as a bad thing, even though its Wii U has yet to sell as well as the […]

Nintendo reveals E3 game demo Best Buy plans and SEGA Sonic exclusive

Nintendo is aiming to democratize E3 2013 next week, partnering with Best Buy in the US and Canada to give access to unreleased games to those who can’t attend the annual gaming event. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed the plans at the tail-end of a Nintendo Direct presentation; “this year,” Fils-Aime said of E3, “it’s all about the games.” That will include an exclusive title with SEGA from the Sonic series.

Whereas previous E3 appearances have seen Nintendo show off new hardware, Fils-Aime said, the show this time around will be focused solely on new titles. Alongside the official announcements, Best Buy locations in the US and Canada will have demo stations set up in multiple stores so as to give gamers a chance to try well in advance of when they’ll be able to buy.

Exact details on which locations and which games will be participating are unknown at this stage. However, Nintendo’s focus on new titles hardly comes as a surprise, given the company has previously blamed a shortage of games for 3DS and Wii U for underwhelming sales.

What there won’t be is a big E3 press conference. It’s not the first time Nintendo has tried to whet appetites with some sneaky pre-release access. Back in November, ahead of sales of the Wii U, various US retailers offered experience kiosks where the new console could be tried out.

Still, developer confidence in the Wii U particularly is looking patchy. EA, for instance, confirmed this week that it has nothing in the pipeline for the console.

The Nintendo Direct also revealed some release dates for upcoming titles, including Donkey Kong and the Legend of Zelda. SEGA, meanwhile, has inked an exclusive deal with Nintendo for the next Sonic the Hedgehog title – Sonic Lost World – which will only be available on 3DS and Wii U.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S coming next month, pre-orders now live

Lenovo‘s long-awaited IdeaPad Yoga 11S is finally about to make its store debut. The 11-inch convertible laptop, which was announced at CES 2013 back in January, now has a release date of June 23 and pre-orders are live starting today on Lenovo’s website, as well as at Best Buy. If you like the Yoga series, but want it in a more compact form factor, this is probably your best bet.

IMG_3396wtmk-w1024-580x435

The Yoga 11S essentially takes the small form factor of the Yoga 11 (which we reviewed), and blends it with the performance of the Yoga 13, offering faster hardware on the inside that makes it a bit speedier than the regular Yoga 11. And of course, it comes with the same 360-degree hinge action that lets you use the device as a tablet of sorts.

Lenovo’s website has the Yoga 11S packing a 1.4GHz Intel Core i3 processor with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid state drive for $800, while Best Buy has a bit of a better deal with a 1.5GHz Core i5 chip on the inside at the same price. You probably won’t notice too much of a difference, but if you’re all about specs, it seems the Best Buy deal is the better grab.

IMG_3384wtmk-w1024

As for the display, the Yoga 11S has the same 11.6-inch HD IPS screen that the regular Yoga 11 has, along with 10-finger touch support. Best Buy will have the Yoga 11S available starting on June 23, while Lenovo’s website lists a ship date of “more than 4 weeks,” which will roughly get us to late June for possibly a tandem release with Best Buy.

We ended up getting our hands on with the Yoga 11S during CES 2013 back in January, and we also reviewed the regular Yoga 11. Indeed, there is a slight performance boost with the Yoga 11S, but the Yoga 11 is working with the nifty Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, which packs quite a punch for a convertible laptop like this.

Best Buy to sell EU stake to Carphone Warehouse

Best Buy has revealed a definitive agreement to sell its 50-percent share of Best Buy Europe to Carphone Warehouse, which it entered into a joint venture with back in 2008. The sale will take place for the equivalent of $775 million, with the majority of it coming in the form of cash and the rest of it being offered in Carphone Warehouse Group stock with a one-year restriction, during which time the group can sell the shares on Best Buy’s behalf at issued prices and higher.

If such happens, the agreement has Carphone Warehouse pegged to pay whatever difference may result under an approximate $99 million agreement based on the sum total of the aforementioned proceeds Best Buy receives in addition to the market value of whatever shares may remain. In addition, says the announcement, Best Buy has to pay nearly $45 million to Carphone Warehouse to settle some current obligations it has with the group.

Although it is a definitive agreement, it isn’t yet completely settled, something that is currently slated to take place this upcoming June. Carphpne Warehouse shareholders need to approve the deal, but its board of directions have agreed and signed letters of commitment to the transaction. Likewise, Best Buy’s board also agrees with the deal. There are currently Best Buy stores being run in eight countries as part of the joint venture between the two companies.

Best Buy’s President and CEO Hubert Joly said about the announcement: “After reviewing the business and spending time with our partners, we concluded that the timing and economics were right to enter into this agreement with CPW. This transaction allows us to 1) simplify our business; 2) substantially improve our Return on Invested Capital, one of the five pillars of our Renew Blue transformation; and 3) strengthen our balance sheet.”

Leap Motion delayed as Best Buy takes the blame

This week the pre-order ship date for the Leap Motion 3D controller device has been moved due in part to a mistake made with Best Buy orders. This date change will not affect the way the device functions, but will change when the device is sent to those that have already pre-ordered the device. The date at which Leap Motion will be leaving the factory is now is in mid-to-late July.

Beta testing in will continue through June, as the heads at Leap Motion have let it be known today, while the ship date for the device appears now to be hard set for July 22nd. Arrival dates will be soon after, depending completely on customer locations relative to the ship points. Leap Motion has made it clear that their requirements for release are extremely strict and that the beta test period was alwasy in play.

“We are behind schedule, it’s not as if we woke up for the first time today and decided we needed a beta test,” noted Leap Motion CEO Michael Buckwald. According to the Buckwald, they do have the ability to meet the original ship date, but have delayed it due to their desire for more comprehensive testing on the device. At this moment, it would appear that the hardware is ready, software tweaks may be in play, and the product “could be shipped tomorrow.”

As for the HP deal spokem about quite recently, it would appear that nothing has been affected between them and the computing company.

“It definitely won’t affect the HP deal. All the milestones that were in play with the HP deal are still in effect.” – Buckwald

The only different between the Beta test units that are created today and those that will be out later this year will be an updated SDK. This software update will bring the device up to the final release version of the machine which will, indeed, be shipped at first on July 22nd.

Samsung ‘Experience’ Shops In Best Buy Stores Will Stay For Three Years

Samsung Experience Shops In Best Buy Stores Will Stay For Three Years

Back in March Samsung announced that it was partnering with Best Buy to open Samsung Experience shops within its stores. The purpose of these small shops within Best Buy stores is to educate shoppers about Samsung products. The Korean company announced that their Experience shops will take roughly 460 square feet of space and will begin functioning from April 8. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen any of them yet. Samsung and Best Buy have inked an agreement to keep these mini shops going for the next three years.

After these three years pass, executives from both companies will evaluate perform, and based on this performance they will decide whether they would like to continue the arrangement or not. Only a few have cropped up in Best Buy stores up till now but the retail giant claims to have received positive feedback from shoppers up till now. Samsung hopes that the Experience mini shops will be open in all Best Buy stores across the country by June. This deal is of great importance as it further increases Samsung’s clout on Apple’s home turf, where the latter still reigns supreme.

T-Mobile HTC One arriving April 19, according to Best Buy

After hearing from AT&T about the release date of the HTC One on their network, T-Mobile is also apparently pushing out the word of the release date for the new device, and it’s unsurprisingly coming the same day that AT&T’s version becomes available. T-Mobile will start selling the HTC One on April 19, according to Best Buy, which has the phone listed at $249.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

T-Mobile confirmed that it would be carrying the HTC One during an event last month to announce its new UNcarrier mobile plans. Along with the iPhone 5 and the Samsung GALAXY S 4, the HTC One will join T-Mobile’s arsenal of mobile devices being offered in stores. The GALAXY S 4 is scheduled to arrive on T-Mobile on May 1, so the HTC One will beat Samsung’s new device to the punch.

While Best Buy’s listing for the T-Mobile version says the phone will sell for $249 after a two-year contract, T-Mobile will sell the phone at $99 down, with two years worth of monthly payments to pay off the full $699 price of the phone. For those looking to do the smaller down payment, it may be a good idea to head straight for a T-Mobile store if you’re in the market for an HTC One.

However, T-Mobile has yet to make an official announcement of the release date of the HTC One, so while Best Buy says that the phone will become available on April 19, we can’t be 100% sure that it will actually happen. However, a release date that’s right on the same path as AT&T seems very believable, we’ll ultimately have to wait for T-Mobile’s word before making the official call.

Best Buy shipping HTC One for T-Mobile starting April 19th, priced at $250

Best Buy to sell HTC One for TMobile starting April 19th, priced at $250

We knew good and well that HTC’s One would be arriving on T-Mobile USA at some point, and for those uninterested in tying themselves to Sprint or AT&T, here’s some news that matters: Best Buy has just confirmed to us that it’ll begin shipping T-Mobile’s flavor of the aforementioned phone on April 19th. The “Glacier Silver” kit will be on sale for as little at $249.99 on a two-year deal, whereas you’ll be forced to pay $699.99 for the blessing of having no strings attached. Granted, T-Mob’s Simple Choice suggests that no contracts will be involved, but if you take the bait on the subsidized price, you’ll either be hanging with the carrier long enough to pay it off, or you’ll be forking out the difference on the way to some other operator.

Best Buy Begins Taking $249 T-Mobile HTC One Pre-Orders

Best Buy Begins Taking $249 T Mobile HTC One Pre Orders
HTC One is a hotly anticipated Android powered smartphone, rivaled by the Samsung Galaxy S4 which too is yet to be released. Major U.S. carriers AT&T and Sprint have already begun taking pre-orders for the One. Only recently pre-orders for the One opened up on HTC’s website as well and quickly sold out. One of the biggest U.S. retailers, Best Buy, is now taking T-Mobile HTC One pre-orders for $249 with a two year contract. Retailers such as Best Buy don’t offer T-Mobile devices with Simple Choice Value Plans, they offer a Classic Plan. It is interesting to note that T-Mobile has still not officially announced that it is taking pre-orders for the HTC One.

Best Buy lists the estimated date of delivery as April 19th, which is the same as the shipping timeframe provided by HTC’s website. The T-Mobile HTC One is still available for pre-order from Best Buy’s website, if you’re planning on putting your order in, do keep in mind that a two year contract is required along with a $20 per month data plan coupled with an all Classic voice plan.
