In October of 2013, a new and free to play game from Crytek hit the PC called Warface. The game was exciting because it was form a top developer. Not too long ago a console version of the game for the Xbox 360 entered closed beta. That meant that only chosen gamers could get in on the free to play action on their console.
Crytek has announced that the game is now in open beta. That means if you wanted to try out Warface for the Xbox 360, but didn’t make the cut for the closed beta you can now get in on the action. The open beta brings the same modes and maps from the closed beta.
Crytek is also promising a constant flow of new content and multiple mission types in co-op mode during the beta. The development team still wants feedback to make the game better before it exits beta.

About a month ago Adobe released some of the first Beta apps from their Creative Suite 4 product line, and that included Dreamweaver CS4. The one app that was disappointingly missing was Photoshop CS4, which has left a lot of people wondering what’s going on with it.
Just like with Dreamweaver CS4 the new Photoshop is going to be receiving a revamped interface, and it looks as though there’s a handy tab system for switching between your open images. That’s definitely a long overdue feature. Aside from that a notable new feature is the app frame that will be available to Mac users. This feature, as described by John Nack from Adobe, will treat the Photoshop application as a single window.
Current users of Photoshop CS3 on Mac know how the application “floats” around your screen, and it feels completely different than the Windows version. Personally I strongly dislike the applications on a Mac that do this because it feels more natural to have everything contained in a single window, but maybe that’s the Windows side of me shining through. Either way this is a feature that I’ll really be able to appreciate.
This is something that will be optional for Photoshop users on a Mac according to Adobe (can be toggled by going to Window -> Application Frame), and as of right now they’re not quite sure whether the application frame will be enabled by default. Here’s the argument that they provide as to why this type of design is beneficial:
- It facilitates N-up (2-up, 3-up, etc.) document layouts that adapt as you adjust the interface. Think “live window tiling”–great for comparing, compositing, etc.
- It makes it easier to move the entire application and its contents, including from one monitor to another.
- It prevents documents from getting obscured by panels (palettes).
- It blocks out the contents of the desktop, minimizing visual clutter. (A number of Mac users have requested this option for many years. I’ve known quite a few people who open a small blank document, hit F to put it into full-screen mode, and then put it into the background to hide the desktop. Willingness to live with that kind of hack demonstrates some genuine desire for a real fix.)
I would suspect that a Photoshop CS4 Beta will be coming any day now, but in the meantime here’s a quick video demonstration of the new application frame on a Mac:

I can’t believe that I’m actually saying this, but I may have stumbled across a text editor that is better than Notepad++! In yesterday’s Daily Downloads I included a free program called PSPad, which sounded like a nice text and code editor. The reason that I had come across it is that they recently released a new Beta version of the software, and so I decided to try it out.
It had the features that I was already familiar with in Notepad++, such as syntax highlighting, but it also had some more unique things. One of the things I quickly fell in love with was the built-in FTP connection manager which would let me browse a remote FTP, open files, edit them, and then save the changes. All of that is done from within PSPad, and I found that to be tremendously useful.
Another thing that I liked was the more advances syntax highlighting that it includes. For example, when you’re in an HTML file and you place your cursor in the middle of a tag, the matching open/close tag is highlighted. I do quite a bit HTML development, and I have quickly become accustomed to this new feature.
Here’s a list of other things that PSPad has to offer:
- Manage projects
- FTP client – edit files directly from the web (stores login information, too)
- Text difference with color-coded differences highlighted
- Syntax highlighting according to file type
- Auto correction
- Intelligent internal HTML preview using IE and Mozilla
- integrated TiDy library for formatting and checking HTML code, conversion to CSS, XML, XHTML
- Reformat and compress HTML code, tag character case change
- ASCII chart with HTML entities
- Code explorer for Pascal, C/C++, INI, HTML, XML, PHP and more in development
- Spell checker
- Matching bracket highlighting
There are also some PSPad extensions available to add more features, syntax highlighting for obscure languages, and many other things. Even if you are content with Notepad++ or another text editor I think you should give this a whirl…remember, it doesn’t cost a dime!
