Windows 8.1 With Bing Announced

Windows 8.1 With Bing AnnouncedThe folks over at Microsoft have confirmed rumors which swirled around concerning a new version of Windows 8.1. In fact, the latest SKU is known as Windows 8.1 with Bing, where it will be aligned more towards OEMs so that they will be able to churn out more affordable Windows-powered devices which in turn, will benefit the end user, especially those who want to jump aboard the Windows platform but are unable to do so because of the high cost of entry.

The new SKU will, of course, see Bing thrust into the big picture as the default search engine whenever you use Internet Explorer, but fret not – there is the usual option for the consumer to change that default into something that you identify with more and would use a whole lot more often. Come to think of it, most folks would automatically go for Google if I am not mistaken, but perhaps some others might prefer Bing. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

It is also said that OEMs have already begun to work on devices that run on Windows 8.1 with Bing, and consumers ought to prepare ourselves to tune in to an official announcement that is set to happen over the course of the coming weeks. [Press Release]

Bing Does Predictions

Bing Does PredictionsWhen it comes to search engines, one must give a nod to their ability to process trillions of signals in order to give a reflection on what is happening in the actual world that we live in. In fact, during the presidential elections in 2012, Bing saw plenty of positive as well as negative queries concerning the presidential candidates from various parts of the U.S. This particular model was looked into further by teams within Bing to see how Bing’s power is able to function as a model outcomes of events, where it could lead to predictions concerning election results or a sporting event.

In fact, in its first iteration that has already gone live on Bing.com today, we see the search engine attempt to predict just which contestants will most likely to be eliminated or move on to the next round of voting shows such as The Voice, American Idol and Dancing With The Stars. Advertisers Reportedly Spending More Money On Bing Now

Advertisers Reportedly Spending More Money On Bing NowBing might not necessarily be a search engine that most people use by default. After all Google has proven itself to be pretty efficient and not to mention very familiar when it comes to using its search engine service, so why bother with another brand or website, right?

That being said, this could also apply to advertisers who might find Google’s platform a more lucrative place to place their ads, although the recent State of Paid Search report, it seems that advertisers are spending more money on Bing than ever.

According to the report, it suggests that Bing’s growth is now growing at a rate that is twice of Google. However it seems that Microsoft still has some ways to go before they can catch up, but the fact that more advertisers are spending money to advertise on Bing’s search platform is still a good sign for Microsoft anyway. Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Delia Perez, the SVP of Marketing Strategy for the State of Paid Search, was quoted as saying, “A number of factors are driving this growth as advertisers are drawn to Bing’s more flexible campaign management tools in the aftermath of Google’s crossover to enhanced campaigns. Advertisers are still adjusting to Google’s bundling of device management, and Bing may be the more attractive option because it can be a customizable alternative.”

Bing.com Gets Personalized Cards

Bing.com Gets Personalized CardsGoogle is still the undisputed champion when it comes to Internet search, but this does not mean that its competitors are pleased to just play second fiddle without doing anything to improve their lot. Yahoo, for instance, intends to end up as the default search engine on iOS, while here we are with Microsoft sprucing up Bing.com so that your search experience there is more personalized. Personalization seems to be a big thing, as folks want their homepage, social network page, gamer account, etc, to be truly unique and one of a kind. It seems that Microsoft is heading in the right direction then.

The standard issue front page on Bing comes with a bunch of virtual cards that are located on the bottom which show off the currently trending news stories. Well, it seems that you can now head on to the Settings section of the site in order to configure the page, allowing the cards to show off even more personalized news, weather, sports happenings, stock prices, and airline flight times, among others.

It is tipped that this particular personalized service will make its way to other Microsoft platforms in due time, and as long as you remain signed in, Bing will be able to take note of your interests and notify you during the appropriate moments concerning a wide range of Bing-powered Microsoft services. Right now, the number of items that can be set up in the Bing personalized cards remain limited, but do expect additions to be made down the road. [Press Release]

Bing Flight Price Predictor Shuts Down

Bing Flight Price Predictor Shuts DownMicrosoft must be busy reorganizing their stuff, considering how they have already stopped official support for the Windows XP operating system and its Office 2003 suite, not to mention closing the door on a service on its Bing Travel site, too. Apparently, this flight price prediction tool is no longer an option on the site. Bummer. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, this decision to shut down the flight price prediction tool was “a business decision to focus resources on areas where we feel there are the greatest opportunities to serve travel needs.”

I suppose the future is really unchartered territory, whether you are in possession of a palantir or not, since one can never be able to tell what is going to be a hit or not. After all, I am quite sure that Microsoft must have had grand plans for forking out a rumored $115 million for Farecast in 2008, which is the company that provided the technology required for such a tool.

The whole premise of the flight price prediction tool is to check out if a particular airline flight that one intends to hop on down the road would increase or decrease in price. Oren Etzioni, the original founder of Farecast, was not too happy to hear of this closure by Microsoft, where he thinks that this happens to be one of the “most distinctive features of Bing.” For those who are looking for alternatives, there is always Kayak.

Bing Shows Off Travel Time And Mileage For Driving Directions

Bing Shows Off Travel Time And Mileage For Driving DirectionsYou know what they say – better late than never, but it always makes sense to plan your day better so that you will be on time – or at least, early to your appointment. Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, has already received a scientific calculator and an image match feature, but this time around, there will be the addition of estimated driving time as well as mileage between two points on the map whenever they are typed into Bing. This is new to Bing, but Google Maps have had those for quite a fair number of years now, so it would not make Google’s executives quake in their boots with this Microsoft announcement.
