WrapUp: BitTorrent Tracker for Reddit Users, Firefox 3.6/4.0 Delays, and More

This article was written on January 04, 2010 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

chrome logo.jpgGoogle Chrome Nabs #3 Browser Spot
Internet Explorer has been on a rather fast decline, and that point is driven home by the fact that it has lost nearly 1% of its market share in each of the last 6-months. Chrome keeps on pushing forward as it squeezes into 3rd place past Safari, but still lags far behind IE and Firefox. All browsers seem to be making progress with the exception of IE, and with some luck we may see Firefox cross the 25% threshold next month.

baconbits.jpgBaconBits: BitTorrent Tracker for “Good” Reddit Users
I have to say that I was rather surprised to see a BitTorrent Tracker that is geared solely towards the Reddit community. In order to be a member of this site you must have signed up at Reddit over 3-months ago, have at least 100 comment karma, and have at least 1 link karma. As long as you meet those requirements there is nothing else you have to worry about… meaning there is no certain ratio you have to hit to remain an active member.

    firefox logo.jpgFirefox 4.0 Pushed Back to Late 2010/Early 2011
Mozilla is letting the deadlines slip once again. The Firefox 3.6 release is now expected sometime in the 1st quarter of 2010, which kicks back Firefox 4.0 to the late 2010/early 2011 timeframe. I understand that issues arise and release dates have to be adjusted accordingly, but I hope Mozilla realizes how competitive the browser market is becoming now that Google has joined the race to dethrone IE. Maybe Mozilla needs to hire on some more people so that they can hopefully meet their initial targets.

    –Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

coffee application.jpgHow to Temporarily Change the Default Program for Filetypes
Coffee is a pretty cool portable app that will let you define a custom set of default applications to use when the program is running. For example, you could use Coffee to make a portable version of Firefox your default browser. All you’d have to do is plug in your USB drive, fire up Coffee, and it will kick in and make the portable Firefox the default app for your web surfing needs.

aero enabler.jpgEnable Windows Aero in Vista/Windows 7 Home Basic
If you’re running Vista or Windows 7 Home Basic I’m sure you’re aware that you can’t take advantage of everything the OS has to offer since you don’t get Aero support. Well, this app will remove that limitation. Assuming your graphics card can handle Aero this app will make the necessary changes so that the additional functionality will be made available to you, and it will disable future hardware checks that could cause Windows to disable it.

    –Tips in Brief–

    splayer.jpgSPlayer – A Lightweight Media Player
This portable media player is compact, free, has a clean UI, and is easy on system resources. A killer combination.

one number.jpgCheck Unread Counts for Gmail, Wave, Reader, and More in Chrome

maildrop.jpgUpload Files to Dropbox by Email
If you leave this app running on a PC you’ll be able to upload files to your Dropbox account simply by attaching files to an email.

    thumbsdb.jpgThumbnail Database Files (thumbs.db) Cleaner
You could simply just search your computer for these files, but this provides a slightly different approach for deleting those pesky thumbnail files from your machine.

    Microsoft Talks Up Bing Future

Microsoft Talks Up Bing FutureIs there a future for Microsoft’s Bing? The answer is of course, a resounding yes! In fact, it was not too long ago when Microsoft rolled out a Bing Maps preview edition for Windows 8.1 users, where users were able to enjoy various features including full 3D photographic maps for 70 worldwide cities among others. Well, it seems that there are more changes that are in the pipeline for Bing Maps down the road.

Apparently, Bing Maps intends to enhance one’s mapping experiences a whole lot more in the future, with a vision for maps where everything will be annotated with useful information, among them including just what buildings are called, the kind of stores that are located within, a way to get in touch with such stores, as well as the time that the stores are open. The additional and deeper level of integration into maps will hopefully make digital maps a whole lot more useful compared to what is currently offered, but it does not sound as though this highly ambitious plan will be introduced anytime in the near future. Microsoft did state at the end though, “Moving forward, you will see us mapping more of everything – both the web and the real world.” [Press Release]

Photosynth Delivers 3D Views Of Real World Spaces

Photosynth Delivers 3D Views Of Real World SpacesGoogle might now allow you to create Street View places on your own, but Microsoft does not intend to just sit back and do nothing about the situation. A response is definitely needed for sure, and just like how a picture is worth a thousand words, don’t you think that certain places are worth a thousand views? A preview of the new Photosynth has been revealed, where this is one app which will be able to analyze digital photographs, ending up with the generation of three-dimensional views of real world spaces.

The rollout of Bing Maps Preview for Windows 8 last week saw one step taken in the right direction of developing a digital replica of the planet using an immersive 3D method, so that one is able to explore the vast world without having to leave the comfort of the living room. From there, the inclusion of Photosynth would be able to provide just about anyone with access to powerful tools in order to capture their own favorite spots worldwide. Just how does Photosynth work? It allows you to upload a bunch of photos to the cloud service, where the technology will be on the lookout for points known as “features” in successive photos which appear to be the same object. Should it discover majority of features that happen in the same photo set, such information will be used in bundle adjustment, which is a standard technique in photogrammetry, to figure out just where in 3D space each feature is. Once done, 3D shapes will be generated based on the feature points, how neat is that? [Press Release]

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

To preview the changes that Microsoft has planned for its mapping service, it released the Bing Maps Preview app for Windows 8.1 today. The company says that this app is a first step in “introducing a new way to explore the world.” The app has been built from the ground up, according to Microsoft, and that they have focused on detail, scale and clarity. To ensure that users are provided with the highest quality imagery possible, Microsoft is showcasing a focused list of more than 70 cities around the globe just to let users know what’s to come from Bing Maps in the future.

Since the app was built for Windows 8.1, it takes advantage of features like Snapview and Windows notification, it also has Live Tile support. Users can explore places of interest, routes and landmarks over the cityscape, they will also have the option to switch to Streetside viewing mode in selected areas. “Bubble view” will provide a preview of the Streetside view while maintaining a broad perspective of the entire map, so basically as the user rotates the map, their view turns with it. In-app search is also present, allowing users to search for a restaurant or a venue and immediately get a route overlay. Favorite routes can also be saved in the Bings Maps Preview app and if certain times are specified, the app will automatically display traffic notification along those routes at the provided time even if the app isn’t active. The app is available for download right now in Windows Store.

Google and Microsoft have reworked their search algorithms to make child abuse content harder to find, though some experts still argue that it will make little difference to those who actually hunt out the illegal imagery. Bing Launches A New Way To Discover Music Videos

Bing Launches A New Way To Discover Music Videos

Bing now offers users a whole new way to explore, discover and browse music videos on the search engine. It has been built from the ground up to make it easier for users to access music videos, Bing says that this new experience was designed with music lovers in mind and that it has them covered if they want to search for music videos from artists they’re already familiar with or if they’re looking to discover the up and coming artists.

So when the user searches for a music video from any artist, Bing will display the most popular video in the top left of the screen and the most relevant and popular music video for an artist, album or song will be displayed in the upper right. Bing will pull in videos from YouTube, MTV, Artist Direct, Vimeo and more. Users won’t have to click through to a site to see if its the video they want to see, they can see a preview by simply hovering the cursor over the thumbnail. Moreover, Bing will also display all of the tracks in an album if the user clicks on the album title in the right hand menu. With half a million albums and over 1.7 million songs from over 70,000 artists, the Bing team believes that this new feature will be “music to your ears.”
