Intel could make traditional passwords obsolete

With a chain being only as strong as its weakest link, so we are told to come up with long and complex passwords that make it hard for other humans to crack, although a computer armed with the right program could make short work of it. Having said that, Intel might just be venturing into a whole new world of passwords – one that does away with a slew of alphanumeric characters, and will instead rely on a new generation software and a biometric sensor which is capable of recognizing the unique patterns of veins on one’s palm.

They’re watching you — or at least will be in a couple of years. That’s when the FBI is gearing up for a nationwide launch of a $1 billion project designed to identify people of interest, according to the New Scientist. Dubbed the Next Generation Identification (NGI) program, the high-tech endeavor uses biometric data such as DNA analysis, iris scans and voice identification to track down folks with a criminal history. The FBI also plans to take NGI on the road literally by using public cameras to pick faces from the crowd and cross check them with its national repository of images. Let’s just say this facial technology isn’t going to be used for lighthearted Japanese vocaloid hijinks or unlocking your electronic device. The use and scope of NGI, which kicked off a pilot program in February, will likely be questioned not just by black helicopter watchers but privacy advocates as well. Facial recognition has certainly been a touchy issue in privacy circles — something Facebook learned firsthand in Germany. Meanwhile, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is already raising concerns about innocent civilians being mixed up or included in the database. Naturally, the FBI claims that the NGI program is in compliance with the U.S. Privacy Act. On the positive side, at least they didn’t name it the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System.

Researchers use bioimpedance as a biometric, let health monitor devices know who you are

Wouldn’t it be great if fitness and medical gadgets automatically knew who was wearing them? Researchers from Dartmouth have come up with a new way to provide health monitors just such an ability using a tiny electric current and a bioimpedance sensor. You see, each person’s body provides a different amount of opposition to electrical current, so bioimpedance can be a unique biometric identifier. The researchers’ idea is to create a bracelet that uses bioimpedance readings to recognize its wearer in a secure, unobtrusive manner and communicate that identity to other wearable devices.

Using such a bracelet, “the devices discover each other’s presence, recognize that they are on the same body (and transitively learn from the wrist device whose body), develop shared secrets from which to derive encryption keys, and establish reliable and secure communications.” As opposed to other biometrics or password authentication, bioimpedance readings can be taken passively, which is much more appealing than remembering passcodes or scanning fingerprints and retinas. For now, the researchers have created an eight-electrode proof-of-concept bracelet, but its accuracy leaves something to be desired — it correctly identifies its wearer only 80 to 90 percent of the time, whereas fingerprint recognition has a failure rate of less than 1 in 1,000. But today, in response to the growth of device-specific voice assistants like Siri and S-Voice, the company wants to take things down a different route: launching a mobile SDK for iOS and Android that any third-party app can employ. Baptized “Nina,” the voice assistant won’t only be able to understand instructions, but will also identify the speaker using vocal biometrics. That means Nina could potentially pay a bill, arrange a bank transfer, book a vacation or even interact with government services without ever requiring you to enter a password. Iris scanners tricked by hackers

What started off as the realm of science fiction has since been made reality for quite some time already in terms of security – I am talking about iris scanners playing its role as one of the most secure biometric security measures to date. However, it does seem to run into a particularly niggling problem – hackers have managed to trick these iris scanners into believing that whatever it scanned is the genuine article, giving access in the process. No, the hackers did not do anything gross like steal someone’s eyeballs, but rather, they managed to replicate a person’s eye using digital codes of real irises which are stashed away in security databases.

Having said that, fresh doubts would be raised over the status of the iris scanner as being one of the more secure methods in the world of biometric security, will it not? So far, experiments have showed that these fake irises will still be able to trick an iris scanner 80% of the time into believing that it was a human real eye in place.

It’s no secret that everyone has a unique swagger — so much so it can be used for identification. Many are working on this for biometric security, including a team at Carnegie Mellon University and Autonomous ID, who are collaborating on shoe insoles that monitor pressure and gait to confirm the identity of the wearer. So far, tests have shown a detection rate above 99 percent within just three steps, meaning they can alert you before that opportunist even makes it out of the locker room. It’s thought the cloud-connected BioSoles could be implemented in security access, although we’re not sure this offers advantages over similar, static technology also in development. We do, however, like the idea that subtle changes in your strut could be used to provide early indications of conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and diabetes. It’s likely that the insoles won’t be available any time soon, so until then, keep an eagle eye on those expensive kicks.

Iris Camera Concept Shoots Just What You See

The Iris camera concept is a biometrically-enabled and controlled by your eye. The idea behind the camera is that it would use your eyeball to figure out what you are looking at and allows you to capture exactly what you see. It was designed by the Royal College of Art graduate Mimi Zou.

Iris is controlled by blinking and squinting, allowing for single-handed operation. It’s supposed to recognize your friends when it focuses on their eyes, and is supposed to identify people by their iris signatures. Once the signature is recognized, the camera loads their preferred settings. The user looks through the lens, but they can zoom in and out by narrowing their eyelids. To snap a photo, just hold your gaze and double blink.

The subject’s iris is also recognized and that allows the camera to tag the photo. The camera can upload files through Wi-Fi or store them onto an SD card.

Of course, the Iris is only a concept at this point, so don’t expect to see it showing up at electronics stores anytime soon.
