When it comes to Blockbuster Video in the US, it is more or less a goner – although there was still some hope left that the UK brand of Blockbuster might see some light at the end of a particularly long tunnel. I guess it was rather too optimistic to see things that way, as there was an announcement which got out earlier today, touting that the remaining 91 stores in the UK will need to shut down by December 16th, which would mean a less than merry Christmas for 808 folks who would be out of a job then.
One of the main reasons Blockbuster’s online business came to a grinding halt was because it failed to compete toe-to-toe with the likes of Netflix and Amazon’s Lovefilm, and Blockbuster’s UK administrators are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be able to find a buyer who is willing to bail the company out – before arriving at the decision to shut down the remaining Blockbuster stores. In order to make sure that the stores have literally nothing left at the closure, expect all remaining stock to see a discount of up to 90%.
