Minecraft PS3 Edition Lands on Blu-ray May 16, Soon on PS4 and PS Vita

Both of my kids play Minecraft; they think it is the coolest game out there. My son plays it on the Xbox 360 and his iPhone. My daughter has a tablet that she carries with her to play on the go and likes the PS3 version on occasion. Each time I’m in the game store in the local mall, at least one kid comes in and asks if they have a copy of Minecraft only to be greeted with “that game is download only” and then spend their money on something else in the store.

I can’t imagine how many sales Mojang has lost in that fashion. Things are about to change with reports that on May 16, PS3 gamers will be able to buy a retail disc version of the game, with PS4 and PS Vita versions to follow soon thereafter.

Shipping games on disc seems obvious; it will make getting the game easier for kids and adults, and save those with slow web connections long waits to play. GameStop has the PS3 version available for pre-order now for $19.99(USD).

Blu-Ray Discs Could Feature Billions Of Colors

Blu Ray Discs Could Feature Billions Of ColorsThe world looks a whole lot better in color than in black and white, don’t you think so? After all, I would say that one of the biggest jumps ever in terms of TV technology would be the one that goes from black and white to color. Of course, there are other milestones such as the leap to Full HD resolution, as well as 3D and 4K streaming, but are those actually far more important than showing stuff off in color? Well, it seems that the next possible quantum leap in your viewing experience would be the introduction of an algorithm by a company known as Folded Space to encode 12-bit Blu-ray discs with billions of colors.

4K Blu-ray Discs Are On Their Way

4K Blu ray Discs Are On Their Way

At the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 last week, 4K was one of the main attractions. A lot of companies showed off their 4K offerings, TVs, displays, camcorders and even short throw projectors. It goes without saying that 4K is the future, the consumer market is expected to move towards ultra-high-definition in great numbers over the next couple of years. This obviously increases the need for 4K content, and the Blu-ray Disc Association is aware of that, which is why it has approved the addition of 4K/ultra-high definition Blu-ray discs.

The 4K Blu-ray discs will be the perfect medium to get UHD content to those who can’t stream 4K content. While the future does give 4K content streaming much importance, not all consumers can rely on streaming and they will look for alternatives. Even though 4K has been added to Blu-ray disc specifications, it might still take a lot of time before the actual discs become available in the market. The Association says that these efforts are moving forward “in earnest,” adding that its currently too soon to know all of the details yet. Its no secret that Blu-ray helped push the adoption of 1080p HD standard, and one can expect the discs to do the same for 4K, even if it ends up taking a couple of years.

Xbox One Plays DVD-Rs All Right

Xbox One Plays DVD Rs All RightWe do know that Microsoft’s Xbox One has not had the smoothest of launches (despite selling more than 1 million units within 24 hours) as there were reports of the Xbox One Blu-ray disc drive failing. Well, Microsoft has since issued a statement on the Blu-ray issues concerning the Xbox One, not to mention us having talked about a rather unorthodox method of fixing the Blu-ray issue which has proven to be successful for some. Basically, the problem surrounding the Xbox One is this – not only is it unable to play 3D Blu-ray discs, it is also unable to playback content that had already been burned to a recordable Blu-Ray (BD-R) disc.

In fact, Microsoft’s Xbox.com site mentioned that the Xbox One “only supports mastered Blu-ray discs and DVDs.” The folks over at HDTVTest did claim that the Xbox One is capable of playing back content which has been burned on DVD-R discs. I guess this bodes well for those who have a huge collection of DVDs, no? However, when the HDTVTest folks decided to give BD-R discs a go, they failed, as they stated, “We tried both single and dual layer discs of various brands and types to rule out media incompatibility, and none would play.”
