Bluetooth Over Wi-Fi Zoomtastic Speed Shocks Our Pants Off

If there’s a must-have mobile technology this year, that’s Bluetooth over Wi-Fi. Easy-to-establish, peer-to-peer Bluetooth connectivity seamlessly coupled with Wi-Fi speeds. As the video shows, the experience is perfect. I want this in my iPhone.

The new Bluetooth specification—technically denominated alternate MAC/PHY—will be official this April. And unlike other technologies, it won’t be in limbo for a while before reaching consumers. In fact, your phone may support it right now, according to Broadcom’s Mukul Suth: Some of their current production chips already have this ability and they will only require a software upgrade to implement it.

The alternate MAC/PHY method is quite clever: The two devices discover each other and shake hands using Bluetooth (being cellphones, computers, or any other shiny thing supporting the standard). When you start any file transfer, the communication gets passed to the Wi-Fi hardware layer, which will transfer your data at 54mbps. Once the transfer is over, Wi-Fi is disconnected and the control passes again to Bluetooth.

It just works. According to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, the standard will allow you to easily:

• Wirelessly bulk synchronize music libraries between PC and MP3 player
• Bulk download photos to a printer or PC
• Send video files from camera or phone to computer or television.

Sounds good to me. Having this easy-to-use, straightforward ability to just connect to any device and transfer information in a fast way, without needing any wireless network or access points, will be great.

Lenovo Constant Connect brings BlackBerry email to ThinkPads automatically

After two years in development, Lenovo Constant Connect is finally here. A groundbreaking new tie-up between Lenovo and RIM has led to the creation of a $150 54mm ExpressCard — which slots into any ThinkPad from around Summer ’08 onward — and automatically pulls down any email sent to your BlackBerry via Bluetooth, even if the laptop is completely powered down. The idea here is to always have your most recent inbox available within eight seconds of opening your machine, and thanks to the card’s dedicated Bluetooth radio and 500MB of inbuilt storage, it can pull down and send out emails so long as the card and your ‘Berry are within 30 feet or so from one another. Aside from needing an ExpressCard slot, you’ll also need a handset with OS 4.2 or higher. It’s designed to work with Exchange, Outlook, POP and Gmail, with Lotus Notes support coming in 2H 2009; as for availability, the card will be available through Lenovo and its partners in early Q2 here in America, while those elsewhere in the world will have to wait until the latter half of the year. Full release and demo video is after the break.

Sony Ericsson launches AB900 wireless car kit, convertible not included

We’ve seen Bluetooth car kits come and go — and Sony Ericsson has sold its fair share — let’s face it, they’re often a huge hassle with very little return for your dollars. The SE AB900 may change that as this portable number offers up an RDS feature that finds an empty frequency to broadcast to your car’s FM stereo, lets you get at your favorite five numbers and voicemail at the touch of a button, and will even let you stream your tunes from your mobile. But wait, there’s more: 26 hour talk time, 40 day standby, no installation required — we love this bit — and it even comes in both black and silver. While the press pictures show a winsome couple giggling as they blast through the countryside in a convertible, the jury’s still out on if this little number can deliver the kind of joy they’re showing us it does. One more pic after the break.

LG’s LBA-C300 Bluetooth ‘QWERTY Card’ is the best calculator look-alike you’ve seen all week

We could just hug LG for this one. The LBA-C300, which just ran by the FCC, is the texting equivalent of a Bluetooth headset — a Bluetooth device that allows you to operate your phone without actually pulling out your phone, except this time it’s for hitting your peeps with rapidly a rapidly composed “LOL” or “LOL, U R.” The generous keyboard looks incredibly typable, and while the entire unit borders on the size of some phones on the market, it means you can leave that bulky numeric keypad dumbphone or hard-to-use touchscreen smartphone in your pocket or bag and get some real communication done with the QWERTY Card. You can also view and store contact info, peep a clock, set an alarm and work you calendar from the device — the Bluetooth pairing means you can even remotely control your phone’s camera, though obviously much of this functionality depends on what phone you pair it with, LG phones are likely to get much better treatment. No word on release date or price, but we’ll probably know more once LG actually announces the device officially.

iVOICE Introduces R1 Bluetooth Speakerphone

iVOICE_R1_Bluetooth.jpg

iVOICE Technologies (www.theivoice.com) has announced the R1 Bluetooth Handsfree Kit , a new hands-free mobile speakerphone for the car. The R1 claims to offer up to 30 hours of talk time on a single charge, and 800 hours of standby time (which is about a month, give or take).

The R1 also features dual-microphone noise-cancellation, with one mic optimizing speech intelligibility while the other works to remove background noise—that’s a similar arrangement to what Aliph, Plantronics, and Motorola use in their latest high-end Bluetooth headsets. The R1 also has a 3-watt speaker, so you can hear callers over the sound of your Subaru WRX STi with a cat-back exhaust at 5000 rpm.

The R1 comes with a carrying pouch, a visor mount, a mini-USB power adapter, a car charger adapter, and a wall adapter. No price or release date has been announced as of yet.

Colorsonic concept MP3 player turns your tunes into groovy colors, man

Colorsonic concept MP3 player turns your tunes into groovy colors, man

MP3 players with screens that show pretty colors are certainly nothing new, but Rhea Jeong’s Colorsonic concept is something rather different. It’s a little donut-shaped device that lacks a proper display, instead lighting its sections up to represent different types of music tagged using software at home — think Shuffle meets mood ring. You could drop all your Sabbath and miscellaneous metal on black, Green Day and various faux-punk on green, and your Clannad and other soothing tunes on a nice dreamy blue. Then, just touch that section of the player and let the music flow. The thing even has storage for two impossibly small Bluetooth earbuds (shown below) that can nestle within the center (aka the Munchkin/Timbit zone). While we generally hate being teased by fanciful concepts as much as you, but this one was developed as part of an internship at Samsung, meaning there might just be a chance it could come to fruition. Sorry, colorblind folks, you’ll have to stick with other oddly shaped ways to play your tunes.

Wiimote and skateboard hacked into a controller, Gator not impressed

Real Virtual Skater is a controller mod that sees a Wiimote liberated from its case and placed inside a box strapped to the underside of a skateboard. Thanks to The Bluetooth, as the player gleams “the cube” (or his “living room”, as the case may be) all his movements are used to control his avatar in the magical world of Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Just the thing for a kid that already has the board, the Vans, the Jams, a Lance Mountain t-shirt, and a JFA cassette — but no real desire to leave his parent’s basement. Technical details are few, but we do have a chest-pounding video of the thing in action after the break.
