These days, when someone says “wearable gadget” they’re most likely talking about something worn on the wrist or on the eyes. But if you don’t see a need for a tiny display, the Xowi voice badge might be the wearable gadget for you. Like most smartwatches, Xowi connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth, giving you a virtual assistant that’s all ears all the time.

Because it doesn’t have a screen, Xowi relies mainly on voice commands and replies to queries with synthesized speech. It has a few buttons, but mostly you’ll need to talk to the badge if you want to get anything done. In exchange you get a very portable device that you can wear not just on your person but pretty much anywhere, while leaving your hands, wrists and eyes free.

Xowi’s inventors claim that their mobile app works with iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone. The app will have dozens of connected services when it launches, but apparently it will be easy for developers to add more and even sell those add-ons.

Pledge at least $149 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Xowi badge as a reward. I’m still not sold on voice commands, but I can see the appeal of Xowi. Then again, I think that when Google Glass arrives and hits a competitive price, all these devices that need to be tethered to smartphones are going to bite the dust.

Winter has started to arrive in many states with temperatures dropping and snow already falling. If you live in a cold-weather state and enjoy outdoor sports you may be interested to hear about BearTek Gloves. These gloves are designed to allow users complete control over Bluetooth devices while keeping your hands warm.

There are three versions of the glove available with one designed for motorcycles, one designed for skiing, and the other designed for outdoor sports. A version of the gloves is also available that gives users control over the GoPro action camera using Wi-Fi. The gloves have a control module in the wrist cuff supporting either Bluetooth or WiFi for the GoPro.

The gloves are designed to give users control over these devices without having to physically touch them. The gloves work by tapping the thumb the various finger touchpads embedded along the sides of the fingers. Touching the thumb to a different finger activates different functionality for the connected device. With the gloves on you’ll be able to control music as well as answer and decline calls.

A portable Bluetooth speaker would always come in handy whenever you want to share your favorite music with a group of people simultaneously, and it would also be useful if you are holding some sort of dance or drama practice out in the open – as music can be pumped out in the middle of nowhere without the need for any nasty cables or wires which could trip someone up. Braven has answered this clarion call with their Braven 440, touted to be the “most talented and portable Bluetooth speaker yet”. We cannot really put this claim to the test, but we do know that the Braven 440 is water resistant for sure, as it pumps out room-filling stereo sound, in addition to juicing up your mobile devices while being highly portable thanks to an ultra-compact and lightweight design.

For the eagle eyed, the Braven 440 would come with similar features like those found on its predecessors, where among them would include a built-in noise-cancelling microphone for speakerphone functionality, the ability to deliver crystal clear sound and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity for a wireless experience. Not only that, it would also be able to feature the signature Braven “look”, as it highlights the clean lines with sleek curved borders as well as arriving in five fiery colors, which will include Lunar Black, Fiji Green, Rio Purple, Monaco Blue and Sahara Red.

Underneath the hood, the Braven 440 will be able to deliver up to a dozen hours of non-stop playback, ensuring that users will be able to enjoy music from just about anywhere without having to juice it up. Not only that, it will also be IPX5 water resistant rated, which makes it the ideal tool for both indoor as well as outdoor use, without the need to worry about accidental spills and splashes. The asking price for the Braven 440 stands at $89.99 a pop if you are interested.
