Ultimate Ears EU Boom Bluetooth Speaker Tries to Stand out from the Crowd

I’ve become a convert of Bluetooth speakers, because of their usefulness and their multiple functions. Granted, I probably wouldn’t have bought myself one the first time out, but after reviewing a demo unit, I was sold on the concept. Streaming media from your mobile devices is just so easy. In the beginning, there were just a few. Now the market at the point of oversaturation. This speaker aims to stand out from the crowd with its durability, good looks, and stereo capability.

The UE Boom from Logitech’s Ultimate Ears boasts impressive sound and unlike other speakers, it’s supposed to be life-proof, thanks to a “plasma coating”. I honestly don’t know what that is. In my experience, a plasma is a superheated ionized gas. Regardless, the cylindrical speaker is dirt, dust, and IPX4 water-resistant, which should protect it from splashes and the occasional rainstorm.

As with most Bluetooth speakers, wireless range is about 50 feet, and is also compatible with NFC-enabled devices for instant pairing. It’s got two 1.5″ full range drivers, and two 2″ passive radiators, and also works as a speakerphone. The speakers have a battery life of about 15 hours and can connect to other EU Booms for a new stereo sound spectacular. The UE Boom speaker sells for $199.99(USD) and is available in a variety of colors.

Bluetooth BBQ Thermometer

They say that cooking is an art, and for those of us who happen to burn the pot while one is boiling water, it goes without saying the kitchen is a whole lot better off without you in it. The thing is, you have this passion to tinker around the kitchen much to the chagrin of everyone else living under the same roof as you, but thank goodness technology has progressed to such a stage where it is able to help out even the most clueless of chefs. Case in point, BBQs are fun, but it is an art to know whether that slab of meat, or row of sausages are well cooked right to the inside. Enter the $79.99 Bluetooth BBQ Thermometer to help you get the job done.

With the Bluetooth BBQ Thermometer, no longer do you need to hang around a hot grill in order to check on the temperature of the food being cooked constantly, leaving you time and opportunity to chat up that sweet young thing whom you have had your eyes on for the longest time already. The Bluetooth BBQ Thermometer would come across as a grilling, cooking, smoking thermometer, where it will work in tandem with an app on your iOS-powered device, or other compatible smartphones. A dual temperature probe will monitor a couple of different meats simultaneously, even up to 200 feet away, and will alert you the moment your food has reached the temperature you set on the base station.

PebbleKit SDK update enables two-way communication for Pebble apps

PebbleKit SDK update enables two-way communication for Pebble apps

Pebble released an SDK update today which lets developers create apps that support two-way communication via Bluetooth. While the new software (called PebbleKit) was hinted at before, it represents a major step forward for the platform by allowing third-party developers to send / receive information between the smartwatch and a smartphone. This opens the door to weather, stock, traffic and remote control apps — among others. Also launching today is the Pebble Sports API which is already being used by two recently announced apps: RunKeeper and FreeCaddie. Since the Pebble SDK was first introduced last April, it’s been downloaded 8,000 times and developers have built 5,000 watch faces and games (such as Droptype, RadarClock and Nyan Watch) which have been installed 300,000 times — not too shabby, if you ask us. Finally, after raising $10 million through Kickstarter last year, the company’s just received $15 million in Series A funding from Charles River Ventures. Let the good times roll, right? PR after the break.

Android to get built-in Bluetooth Smart Ready support this year

Android to get builtin Bluetooth Smart Ready support this year

As powerful as Android can be, Bluetooth is one of its glaring weaknesses: the absence of a default Bluetooth framework has led to inconsistent implementations from both device builders and app developers. Google is at last covering that gaping hole, however. As hinted earlier today, it’s incorporating Bluetooth Smart Ready support (that is, Bluetooth 4.0 on a dual-mode chip) in an upcoming version of Android. Having a common platform should allow for more reliable behavior, not to mention fewer roadblocks to using low power Bluetooth Smart (single-mode Bluetooth 4.0) devices like the Fitbit Flex. There’s only one catch that we can see, so far: when Google hasn’t said how soon we’ll get that Android upgrade, wireless peripheral lovers will have to remain patient.

If you say XPERIA, you might remember its highly-functional camera. Sony’s CMOS image sensor “Exmor RS for mobile” is featured with “XPERIA A SO-04E” and that makes it strong against backlight. When it’s in sleep mode, it will shift to camera mode instantly by pressing a small bottom on the side so it is harder to miss the moment than with other smartphones when you want to take a photo. This is functionality that we’ve only seen with XPERIA.

It is waterproof and dustproof, and it’s compatible with NFC, infrared data communication, Bluetooth, and wallet phone function.
