Sony sets US pricing for 55-, 65-inch HX950 HDTVs: $4,499 and $5,499

Sony sets US pricing for 55, 65inch HX950 HDTVs $4,499 and $5,499

We had to wait an extra week for the US details, but Sony has revealed Stateside pricing for its new top of the line HDTVs at CEDIA 2012. The 55- and 65-inch BRAVIA XBR-HX950 HDTVs have pricetags of $4,499 and $5,499, respectively and the press release promises immediate availability online, at Sony stores and through “select” retailers although we heard they may arrive in force around the same time as the 84-inch 4K monster. The press release also has all the specs for these refreshed versions of the old HX929 champ, which bring along all the local dimming, Gorilla Glass and connected TV features we’ve come to expect without any additional surprises, although we suspect that won’t slow down orders from any fans of the monolith TV style with $5k or so burning a hole in their pocket.

Sony 84-inch 4K LCD TV to kickstart global launch at the end of this year

Sony is first off the blocks by rolling out the industry’s largest 84″ class TV sometime at the end of this year, delivering high-resolution large screen picture and action that will be accompanied by high-quality powerful sound in order to deliver an immersive experience for viewers, letting you enjoy TV in a totally new way – I myself personally think that a large screen TV offers by far and large a more immersive experience compared to that of a 3D TV. What do you think? Let us check out what else the 84-inch TV is able to deliver right out of the box, right after the jump, shall we not?

To put it in a nutshell, the spanking new Sony Bravia will boast of a 4K (3840 x 2160) LCD panel, offering four times the resolution of current Full High Definition TVs that are in the market. This new TV will incorporate Sony’s 4K X-Reality PRO super-resolution high picture quality engine in order to get the job done, where this particularly formidable combination is able to seamlessly deliver high-resolution large-screen picture with high-quality powerful sound without missing a beat. I guess this is one TV that I will have to experience an eyes-on in order to fully grasp what I am writing about here.

About the 4K LCD panel? Well, it comprises, of approximately 8.29-megapixels, which is 4 times the resolution of Full HD standard as mentioned earlier, allowing you to reproduce a range of content with different resolutions, ranging from HD digital broadcasts to content from Blu-ray discs. Viewers need not worry about the pixels, while letting you notice images which are breathtakingly realistic and beautifully clear, courtesy of its wide 60-degree viewing angle, never mind if you sit as much as half the distance to the display – when you compare it to viewing something at Full HD resolution.

You know for sure that this is going to be one expensive TV to own, where we are most probably looking at a price tag which is easily capable of purchasing a nice family sedan with some spare change left over to boot.

Sony demos Bravia HX950 flagship HDTV at IFA, confirms pricing from €2,999 (hands-on video)

Sony demos Bravia HX950 flagship HDTV at IFA, confirms pricing from 2,999 handson video

Eager to get your hands on a top-of-the-line set without shelling out five figures for a super-slick 55-inch OLED? Sony’s Bravia HX950 may have caught your eye, with its Intelligent Peak LED Backlight that’s said to deliver “the best contrast Sony has to offer.” According to representatives at IFA (who don’t always tend to offer the most consistent specifications), the full-array system includes 196 individual zones, letting the television adjust backlighting on a more granular level, resulting in brighter whites and deeper blacks. We caught up with both the 55- and 65-inch flavors of Sony’s HX950 at the company’s booth, where several demo stations were arranged to highlight the backlighting, along with features called 3D Super-Resolution, Internet Video Super Resolution and HD Super Resolution. All of the side-by-side demonstrations provided noticeable improvements, though all three Super Resolution settings may be a tad too sharp for some viewers.

The set itself is as gorgeous as you’d expect for a flagship model, with a black glossy bezel and a narrow design that’s sufficiently svelte without stepping into ultra-thin territory. The specially designed glass panel does indeed help to reduce glare, as we experienced in the visually congested IFA booth. Perhaps most interesting is the price — €2,999 (about $3,800) for the 55-inch model, and €4,999 (about $6,300) for the 65 incher — a steep drop from the 650,000 yen (about $8,270) the HDTV is commanding in Japan. We weren’t able to confirm US availability or pricing, which will likely come in below the European tag, but reps did quote a November 1st ship date, which seems to be in line with the November 10th date we heard for Japan earlier this week. You’ll have but two months to wait before adding this monster to your collection, but you can snag a look today in our gallery below and hands-on video after the break.

Sony 84-inch 4K Bravia 84X900 TV hands-on

Who needs windows at home, when you can have an 84-inch TV running at 3,840 x 2,160 resolution on the wall instead. Sony’s new 4K Bravia 84X900 is a masterpiece of overkill (though we wouldn’t object if Sony sent us one for “long term loan”) but, as overkill goes, it’s one that heralds the next phase in super-high-definition home entertainment. We stood in awe of the pixel-packing behemoth at IFA; read on for our first impressions.

Vast. Bright. Incredible. It’s easy to be broken down to just a few stuttering words when you’re in front of the 84X900: 4K is one of those technologies that proves truly jaw-dropping when you first see it. 1080p suddenly looks clunky and jagged in comparison; you have to get right up close to the Bravia’s panel before you see the individual pixels.

It’s not just the individual detail, though; it’s the smoothness. Sony was showing a looping clip of a young girl surrounded by landscapes and floating water bubbles, and there was no smudging or blurring, just incredibly life-like movement.

It’s not a small TV, in terms of thickness, but we’ve a feeling most people won’t object to that if they can afford the 84X900. Exactly how much that will require is unclear; Sony says the new set will begin shipping from September, though hasn’t given a final sticker price yet.

Sony IFA 2012 Wrap-Up

Well folks, today marks the first major day of IFA 2012 over in Berlin, Germany, and we had tons of exciting and worthwhile news from Sony, Samsung and multiple others. For those that missed the bulk of the news in the early hours this morning we have a full breakdown of Sony’s IFA aspirations. From 84″ TV’s to Android tablets and more. Check it out below.

Now obviously Sony has tons of products on display for IFA 2012, so we’re just going to round up and mention a few of the important product launches that stood out the most this morning. That all starts with their new 84″ 4K Bavia HDTV. Yup they just launched their first 4K TV and it comes in at a massively impressive 84″ with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. It upscales everything into 4K and even has some passive 3D features for that crowd too. It’ll be expensive and hit stores sometime early September. Who’s buying?

Next up we wanted to talk mobile considering Sony’s been slowly but surely getting more popular in the smartphone market. Today Sony rebranded their tablet line into the XPERIA name and launched a new and improved Sony Xperia Tablet S. It rocks a quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich all for $399. Next up was smartphone and Sony had a new range of three smartphones. The top-tier Xperia T, then they also launched an Xperia V and a budget friendly J.

That was then followed by a brand new Microsoft Surface competitor with their new Windows 8 convertible PC called the Sony VAIO Duo 11 tablet. The picture above should explain plenty otherwise hit the link for Sony’s take on a Surface-like Windows 8 tablet PC. It rocks a Core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM and up to 256GB SSD options. Not bad right?

Then to round off a few more interesting aspects of Sony’s day we have a personalized 3D headset called the Sony HMZ-T2 Personal 3D viewer. This unit is designed to give users a personal, private, and unique perspective of 3D content and looks rather interesting. We’ll be hearing more on that soon I’m sure. Lastly they showed off a few NFC-capable Bluetooth wireless speaker systems that will work with the above Xperia tablet and smartphones. Simply tap the device to the speaker and NFC will enable music playback and start right off from your last played favorite track. This is music enjoyment in its simplest form. Last but not least they announced a micro action cam to take on the GoPro called the Sony Action Cam.

We will have plenty more coverage from Sony, and everything else at this years IFA 2012 event so stay tuned and don’t forget to stop by our IFA 2012 Hub.

Sony’s 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X9005 hits the IFA show floor, we go eyes-on

As ever, Sony’s IFA press conference was a veritable storm of products, but CEO Kaz Hirai was clearly the most excited about the company’s new 84-inch 4K TV, the Bravia KD-84X9005, and after beholding the thing for a bit alongside a scrum of fellow tech journalists in Sony’s booth at IFA, it’s pretty clear why. The thing is beautiful — and yeah, we can confirm, as Kaz suggested, that you really do want to stick out your hand and touch the picture when you’re standing in front of it, particularly, when the video cycles through images of the ocean, with water droplets hitting the screen.

At 84 inches, this thing is a beast, with at least a dozen or so folks standing comfortably around it to catch a glimpse of the display. The Bravia is surprisingly thin for such a beast. There are speaker bars attached to either side of the display, with a control panel along the bottom. The stand consists of two metal bars holding up what’s surely a weighty set. Check out our eyes-on video after the break.

Sony’s rolling out the new products thick and fast at its press conference at IFA, the latest beauty on display, this stunning 84-inch 4K Bravia TV. The new 3,840 x 2,160 LCD telly comes loaded with X-Reality Pro Engine to take care of the rendering, and a “10 Unit Live Speaker” system. If two dimensions aren’t enough, then the KD-84X9005 also supports upscaling for greater-than-HD passive 3D. No information on price at this time (Update: We’ve been informed we should hear about pricing next week at CEDIA, so stay tuned), but it should be available from the end of this year.

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with 'Intelligent Peak LED' backlighting

While Sony’s current lineup of HDTVs has so far topped out with the HX929/920 series that’s been kicking around since 2011, in Japan it has just unveiled a new top of the line model: the HX950. Often rumored in the last few months, it’s available in 65- or 55-inch varieties and features Sony’s now-trademark monolithic style as well as “Intelligent Peak LED” backlighting. Although Sony’s brand name for the tech doesn’t exactly reveal how it works, information leaks have suggested it is full array LED backlighting and not edge based, although we don’t know how many zones (individually controlled light sources) are in play. What we do know, however is that it claims to outperform the LED backlighting in the old 929 quite handily, although we’ll let our eyes be the judge of that.

It also includes MotionFlow XR960 (800 in the US) motion processing tech that can create 240fps from 60 frames and a glass panel mounted to the LCD itself with a special type of resin designed specifically to reduce glare. Finally, there’s also the usual add-ins like 3D and Sony Entertainment Network streaming video. We haven’t seen any European or US information for this model yet, although with IFA 2012 under way and CEDIA coming up that may change quickly. Currently pricing in Japan for the 65-inch is expected to be around 650,000 yen or $8,269 when it ships November 10th, but we should mention actual US prices are typically much lower than a direct conversion. Unofficially, one retailer is already listing the 55- and 65-inch models for sale in the US for $3,499 and $5,499, respectively, although we’d take that with a grain of salt until we know for sure.
