Sony VAIO P hands-on

We just grabbed a first look at Sony’s new VAIO P. At first glance, the screen is bright and ultrasharp — certainly stretching the limits of our eyesight. We’d say the keys are a little bit light and shallow for our taste, but good as far as most “netbooks” go, and the “nipple,” like all like pointers, will take getting used to and careful calibration, though it’s definitely sensitive. It’s certainly not hefty, but we’d say there’s the standard amount of Sony build quality, and while high for a netbook, $900 doesn’t “feel” too far off. We love lightweight, but this netbook almost feels like it lacks innards, the real deal seems almost like it’s a mock-up device. Videos of all all its best sides after the break.

Sony gets official with VAIO P: world’s lightest 8-inch netbook

Not that we really needed Sony to tell us something we already knew, but we certainly appreciate the gesture. The hotly anticipated VAIO P is for real, and it’s coming in as the world’s lightest 8-inch netbook at just 1.4 pounds. The Vista-based device packs an almost unbelievable 1,600 x 768 resolution LED-backlit XBRITE-ECO LCD display, 802.11n WiFi, 3G WWAN, Bluetooth, a battery good for four hours (eight hours with the optional high-capacity cell) and a GPS module for good measure. You’ll also find an instant-on mode that launches directly into Sony’s Xross Media Bar interface, and the inbuilt webcam will keep the video chats going well into the morning. It’ll start shipping in early February (in garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white and classic black hues) for $900 and up, and you can peek the full release just after the break.

Sony touchscreen Walkman NWZ-X1000 OLED player hands-on!

Sony’s press event is just about to start, but we managed to sneak away and grab some snaps of the heavily-guarded new OLED touchscreen Walkman NWZ-X1000. It’s under some major glass and lights and we were working fast, so we apologize for any blurriness, but that’s the price of exclusives, kids. Check back soon for the official shots during the presser — and don’t worry, we’re on the hunt for the VAIO P.

Panasonic introduces wireless, 1-inch thick TC-P54Z1 VIERA plasma

Here at the Panasonic press conference at CES 2009, the company finally woke us up with a stunningly thin 1-inch thick plasma: the all new Z1, or the TC-P54Z1 VIERA, in particular. Little is being said about the panel for now, though we are told that it’ll be wireless (via an undisclosed standard) right out of the box. In related news, we’re also told that VIERA Cast-enabled sets will soon be able to suck down Amazon on Demand content, so it’s good to see Panny keeping up with with the Jones family in that regard as well.

Nokia N810 WiMAX reaches ‘end of life’

Well, that certainly was a quick little experiment, wasn’t it? Just months after quietly becoming available, Nokia has just as quietly slapped an “end of life” label on the N810 WiMAX Edition, officially ending Nokia’s consumer-level support for the wireless standard — for the time being, anyhow. Though we’ve been able to confirm that the discontinuation is official, no word was given as to why it fell off the market so quickly — Nokia inststs that it was a “natural” end of life — but if we had to take a stab at it, we’d guess the Baltimore-only availability had something to do with it.

Vizio Connected HDTV directly streams Netflix movies

Move over LG, Vizio is now the second manufacturer bypassing the set-top box and doing Netflix streaming straight to the TV. Apparently just one of Vizio’s “key content partners” expect to browse your queue via customized remote over wired or wireless connection when the new lineup hits retailers later this year. Looks like someones putting in work on that goal of enabling streaming to all US households.

LG’s 2009 Blu-ray revamp and new Blu-ray HTIBs

LG BD370

Today at CES, LG shared the details of its two new Network Blu-ray players that will be the first to support the new NetCast with content partners like CinemaNow and YouTube — no love for the older players. The BD370 and BD390 are essentially the same with both featuring BD Live etc, with the main difference between the two being the BD390 includes 1GB of internal storage for BD Live, and 7.1 discrete analog output. No word on the price of either, but the BD370 is due in Q2 while the 390 is due in Q3. There are also three new home theater systems that feature Blu-ray players, which of course are also BD Live and feature NetCast, but more interestingly also sport TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. Unlike the LHB954, the LHB977 and LHB979 both feature Tallboy speakers and two HDMI inputs which will really come in handy for anyone with a game console or a STB — so yeah like everyone. The LHB979 (picture after the break) distinguishes itself from the rest with speakers that were designed by Mark Levinson and has more power.
