Raspberry Pi Bullet Time Rig: Frozen Pi

The folks at PiFace – makers of hardware interfaces for the Raspberry Pi – wanted to make a camera rig that could create the bullet time effect popularized by The Matrix, but they didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars on cameras. Naturally their first instinct was to see if they could use the Raspberry Pi to make a cheaper alternative. To their surprise, their idea worked!

PiFace calls its rig the Frozen Raspberry Pi or Frozen Pi. It consists of 48 Raspberry Pis each with a Raspberry Pi Camera and a PiFace Control and Display interface, all mounted on a laser-cut wood frame. The computers are networked via Ethernet so they can be simultaneously triggered remotely and so that the pictures they take can be sent to a single computer. PiFace wrote a Python script to collect the pictures and arrange them in order. Skip to around 2:17 in the video below to see the rig in action and people in inaction.

Slow down time and head to the PiFace blog to find out more about how they made the Frozen Pi.

NASA Engineers Built an Insanely Complex Bullet-Time Rig For Fun

Back in May, our friend and ex-NASA JPL engineer Mark Rober, figured out a way to shoot "bullet time" videos on the cheap, with a ceiling fan, a pair of flashlights, and a GoPro. Pretty damn creative, but the rig had its limitations. So Mark set out to find a way to create a similar set-up, this time using a high-end Phantom camera. Thank goodness.

Playing with Your Dogs in Matrix-style Bullet Time Looks So Fun

Slow motion and Matrix-style bullet time was invented for this and this only: dogs. As in playing with dogs and recording them in bullet time with 52 GoPro cameras set up to freeze time. The video itself is already fun (if you have a heart) but the behind the scenes footage is almost just as interesting (if you like cameras).

GoPro Cameras Deliver Bullet-Time Scenes From Everyday Activities

We’ve seen the GoPro used to create some amazing visuals such as the camera being used to record the process of traveling to space, as well as giving sports fans a first-hand view of their favorite sports with the RefCam But this latest recording method allows the average person to create cool-looking bullet-time effects in their videos.

Permagrin Films’ Marc Donahue created a mount that groups together a bunch of GoPro cameras to simultaneously take a shot to create bullet-time moments out of any visual, making it instantly cool. Because of the combination of the half-circle mount and the cameras capturing a moment simultaneously, the transition between one image to another looks seamless to us, although Donahue admits it requires a bit more tuning in order for the GoPro cameras to fire in closer succession. How To Film Bullet Time Action Shots With an Army of Go-Pros

Ever since The Matrix, it’s been something of an action movie staple to have slow-down-swing-around-the-subject shots. And it’s not even that hard to pull off, if you have a veritable army of GoPros anyway. That’s how Marc Donahue and Permagrin Films did it, and the results are pretty neat. More »
