Destiny Video Documentary Highlights Guns, Matchmaking And Customization

Gamescom is currently going strong, which means there’s been a ton of gaming news coming out in the past couple of days. One game we’re sure you’re dying to hear more about is Bungie’s upcoming title, Destiny. Well, you’re in luck as the company has released a new video documentary, or ViDoc for short, highlighting a number of the game’s features.

The new ViDoc highlights the specifics of the three weapon slots you’ll be allowed to use in Destiny, some of the game’s locations, and character customization, which Bungie says your character will evolve from their humble beginnings to become even more badass as you progress through the game.

Bungie also goes into detail on the game’s seamless matchmaking, which is able to allow your friend to pop in and out of your game without the player receiving any kind of prompt. The developer describes this experience by saying you’ll be walking along, to suddenly hear gunshots in your immediate area. When the player looks around, they’ll suddenly see their friend in the game with them. If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably walk right past them as you awkwardly try not to make eye contact with their character, hoping they won’t want to team up with you.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg on how Destiny was ‘born modern’ and why social connectivity will define the next-gen

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg on how Destiny was 'born modern' and why social connectivity will define the nextgen

Successive generations of console gaming have been, historically, defined by improvements in graphics. But Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg envisions a different future for the coming next-gen of gaming and it’s all about connectivity. As he told our own Ben Gilbert at Gamescom 2013 this week, “The same way that Xbox Live and PlayStation Network led to the big trend in this generation being multiplayer games, I think that some sort of connectivity and social amplification of games is probably something you’ll see a lot of creative activity around [in the next-gen].” Hirshberg offered up Destiny, Bungie’s upcoming hybrid FPS / persistent world game as a prime example of this trend, and referred to the title as being “born modern” — a video game and social network rolled into one.

Hirshberg’s aware that not all gamers are ready to jump ship from the current console generation. Which is why his company decided to invest in a new engine for Call of Duty: Ghosts to maximize the beauty of its visuals and audio, but still make it a multiplatform, cross-generational title. Activision’s even partnering up with retailers to offer gamers incentives (in the form of a minimal upgrade fee) to make the next-gen leap should they initially purchase the PS3 or Xbox 360 version.

As for where forward-facing virtual reality hardware like the Oculus Rift fits in, Hirshberg wasn’t as optimistic. He’s used the VR headset before, but primarily views it as a non-additive layer for gaming that’s better enjoyed in “small doses” due to its intensity.

Bungie’s Destiny Red Death Gun Is One Cool Weapon

Bungie’s Destiny Red Death Gun Is One Cool WeaponWhen it comes to the greatest weapons ever in FPS history, I am quite sure that certain iconic “greats” in the past does flit across your mind, from the double barreled shotgun in Doom II, to the Rocket Launcher in Quake, as well as the BFG from all Doom series, in addition to the Plasma Rifle from Half-Life, there are always classics here and there, and it can be pretty difficult to vote the best since it is extremely subjective in nature. As for Bungie who are working on their future open-world shooter Destiny, one of the latest things about the game that has been shared would be the Red Death gun.

The Red Death was conceptualized by Bungie artists Frank Capezzuto and Tom Doyle, where it is touted that this particular “exotic” rifle happens to be nearly a relic, which Doyle expounds, “Exotics are the legendary weapons of yesterday, hand-crafted by our ancestors and left strewn about the system. Scoring one on a mission of utmost importance marks the end of one tale for this implement of destruction, and the beginning of another. Like every element of our game, this weapon of old tells a story about the world that created it.” We cannot wait to see what kind of havoc can it unleash in the gaming universe, and will it stand the test of time eventually?

Custom PlayStation 3s for Sony’s Friends: It Only Does Sweet Casemods

The very talented case modder Javier Riquelme customized several PlayStation 3 consoles for Sony, who in turn gave them as gifts to its partner developers and publishers. With the exception of what seems to be Javier’s trademark flourish, each console looks radically different and suited to its theme. This dude is for real.

playstation 3 casemod 1 borderlands by jriquelme

As I said, each casemod is unique; if someone told me that the Borderlands-themed PS3 was made by someone from Gearbox Software while the Metal Gear Rising one was made by a cyborg ninja from Kojima’s lair I would have believed that. But Javier does like adding thick letters with LEDs that contrast nicely with the rest of the sweet art on the surface of the console.

playstation 3 casemod 5 bungie destiny by jriquelme 300x250
playstation 3 casemod 6 grand theft auto v by jriquelme 300x250
playstation 3 casemod 7 assassins creed 3 by jriquelme 300x250

All of these look awesome, but I want to shake Javier’s hand just for the Assassin’s Creed casemod. I don’t even like that franchise and I want the console. You can see more shots of Javier’s work on his Imgur gallery, on his Twitter page and on his Facebook page.
