As the latest of many changes that have been made to Yahoo! under CEO Marissa Mayer’s reign, the company announced via Tumblr that it will be shutting down a dozen services over the new few months, with the last one going down on September 28. This move in part removes services that have received little

Apple pens deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing after delays

We reported on April 11 following a tip that Apple was distancing its hardware relationship with competitor Samsung via a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. While the rumor proved to be true, that deal was delayed due to “glitches” and other problems on TSMC’s part, with the manufacturer having issues meeting Apple’s quality standards.

Two sides of BlackBerry plunge: we’re fine and no you’re not

While BlackBerry makes its best effort to find its way back to smartphone positivity, this weeks’ response to the company’s latest earnings have been rather negative. It’s not as if the company doesn’t understand what’s happening, and how it’ll be seen by the public – “[BlackBerry is still in] early stages of its transition” remarked

Tesla stands victor in North Carolina direct car sales battle

Last month, North Carolina state auto dealerships kicked up a fit over Tesla‘s direct car sales approach to getting its Model S into consumer hands, spurring a legislative proposal that would ban such a retail method. New York followed soon after, and in both instances Tesla pushed back, saying that selling the Model S in

Samsung lures former BlackBerry UK chief for EU business unit

Samsung lures former BlackBerry UK chief for EU business unit

When Rob Orr left his role as BlackBerry’s UK and Ireland chief earlier this month, we knew it wouldn’t be long before another company sought out his skills. Turns out, his final destination has been Samsung, where the seven-year RIM veteran will take up a vice presidential role in the Korean giant’s business-to-business telecoms operation. There’s an official release from Samsung after the break, but we’d have preferred it if Orr had posted something amusing to his Linkedin.

Pandora speaks out against “falsehood” accusations regarding royalties

Pandora is no stranger to criticism when it comes to royalties, with some saying that it pays too little while the streaming radio service strives to gain lower fees. Back in November, for example, songwriter Ellen Shipley said a song she wrote was played 3.1 million times and earned her $39. A similar statement was

Apple launches online store in Russia, avoids Yakov Smirnoff gags

Image

It was last summer when we first heard the rumblings that Apple was preparing to launch a retail presence in Russia, and a year later, it’s arrived. The company has opened a localized version of its online store, letting locals snap up the fruity devices without resorting to a middle man. There’s no word on if this’ll be followed up with a retail presence, but we imagine Apple will have to amend its T-Shirt-based retail uniform for those unyielding Siberian winters.

Apple details iOS 7’s improved business credentials

Apple details iOS 7's improved business credentials

While iOS already has a place in the corporate world, that spot isn’t guaranteed when there’s competition with both a renewed BlackBerry and Samsung’s Knox. Accordingly, Apple isn’t leaving anything to chance: it just posted a page explaining the business-friendly iOS 7 features that it teased at WWDC. The biggest improvements for end users may be enterprise single sign-on and per app VPN, both of which will save hassles when launching work apps. IT managers should have it easier as well — iOS devices can join Mobile Device Management as soon as they’re activated, and a company can assign apps to individual users without losing control. There’s considerably more features than we can list here, but it’s clear from a cursory glimpse that Apple likes its foothold in the enterprise.

Microsoft, Telefonica teaming up to push Windows Phone 8 devices in Europe, Latin America

Microsoft, Telefonica teaming up to push Windows Phone 8 devices in Europe, Latin America

Windows Phone 8 may be third in the league table, but we doubt Microsoft is satisfied with its bronze medal. That’s why it’s signed a one year marketing deal with Telefonica that’ll see the world’s fifth largest mobile network pushing WP8 handsets in Europe and Latin America. According to the release, the pair will offer customers Redmond’s cloud services like Office 365, Skydrive and “Xbox” in an attempt to coax users away from the ‘current duopoly of Android and iOS.” Unfortunately there’s no details on the specifics of the deal, so we’ll guess the pair teamed up purely out of a sense of altruism.
