Time Warner Cable drops CBS in NYC, LA and Dallas (update: maybe not)

CBS channels drop from Time Warner Cable

Time Warner Cable and CBS have been negotiating over a retrans deal for quite some time, and after several extensions talks broke down tonight. TWC’s static replacement page for the networks even suggests Aereo as a replacement, an interesting endorsement considering the online service’s legal entanglements. According to a statement from Time Warner Cable, this means it’s dropping CBS in regions including New York City, Dallas and Los Angeles. Nationally, Time Warner Cable subscribers will do without Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel. As CBS’ website helpfully points out, if it goes one this means subscribers will also miss college and pro football, MLB, PGA Tour and US Open events, shows like Under the Dome, CSI and more. Of course, Time Warner Cable’s site points to options like the CBS.com website. We’ll see who holds out, and for how long — check after the break for a list of affected channels and areas.

Update: According to Time Warner Cable, at the request of CBS it has stopped removing the channels, so if you’ve been seeing a replacement screen your programs may be back very soon. Both sides indicate negotiations are ongoing, we’ll let you know if there are any updates.

Fan TV Entertainment Center: The Zen Way of Watching TV

I’ve seen many different kinds of clunky TV boxes, and many are forgettable. There are quite a few that are basically eyesores in your living room, and it’s not always easy to find a way to make them appealing, except if you completely hide them away.

Fan TV was developed by Yves Behar’s Fuseproject studio. The design was created for the company Fanhattan. The remote and set-top box are quite unique.  They are supposed to mimic nested stones. The pebble-shaped remote is supposed to respond to the slightest touch, and you can tap as well as swipe it to navigate through your movies and shows.

The system itself is designed to integrate live TV, DVR and streaming media in a single interface. Though it’s not clear what other devices will be required in order to use the live TV and DVR features. There will also be companion apps for iOS devices so you can watch and control your content on the go.

There’s no word yet on pricing or a release date for the system.

Cable companies may lower bills by getting rid of sports

Many people have been cutting their cable thanks to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Instant Video, but the reason many people are still glued to their cable subscription is that live sports are hard to find on anything other than cable, but that may change slightly, as cable providers are looking into cutting sports from their lineup in order to provide lower monthly cable bills.

cable

You may have experienced your cable bill rising ever so slightly recently, and it’s a running joke that our cable bills keep getting more and more expensive, but that actually has mostly to do with sports programming. The fees that cable operators pay to offer sports networks have risen a whopping 113% over the last 10 years or so.

In 2012, cable providers paid regional sports networks an average of $2.47 per subscriber to carry their channels as part of their digital basic programming, which is up from $1.12 in 2002. This means that you’re paying almost $2.50 every month for a sports channel that you may or may not be using (fees for ESPN and ESPN2 was a combined $5.71 in 2012), and the odds are, you aren’t watching sports.

TV ratings company Nielsen found that only a measely 4% of households watch sports on average, but in order to offer an attractive lineup of channels to consumers, cable providers are still having to pay these fees that are being passed along to the consumer. However, cable providers are considering cutting down on sports networks in order to offer lower monthly bills for customers. Both AT&T and DirecTV have already begun doing this.

However, this could spell bad news for sports fans, as the cheapest cable plan may no longer consist of favorite sports channels, leaving these people to upgrade to a higher-tier plan and pay more money to get the sports channel they want. Of course, we talked in the past about how great of an idea it would be to have an a la carte option for channels, but we don’t see that happening anytime soon, if ever.

Cox flareWatch beta brings IPTV with 60 HD channels, cloud DVR for $35 monthly

Cox flareWatch TV beta brings IPTV with 60 HD channels, cloud DVR for $35 monthly

While everyone tries to figure out what the future of TV looks like, Variety reports Cox Cable has crossed over to offering internet TV service to customers in Orange County. flareWatch beta testers can buy a Fanhattan Fan TV set-top box for $99 (up to three per household) and sign up for a TV package that features 90 live TV channels (60 in HD) and includes the usual favorites like ESPN / ESPN2, AMC, CNN, Nickelodeon and TNT, with video on-demand coming soon. DVR recordings take place in the cloud, with 30 hours of storage available for each subscriber.

There is one notable limitation however, as with cable company provided TiVo DVRs, streaming services like Hulu and Netflix are not available. Cox already cloud based storage under the MyFlare brand name, and Variety also mentions the company plans to expand it with music and game services. Other providers have hinted at offering IPTV options and Comcast launched an IPTV test at MIT, but this is the first one publicly available from a major company. If you live in the area, demonstrations are available at several locations, check out the site at the link below and a preview video after the break.

TiVo brings its mobile apps to cable providers, TiVo hardware not required

TiVo brings its mobile app experience to cable providers, with or without TiVo hardware

TiVo’s mobile apps have so far been limited to those who use the company’s DVRs, but that audience is about to get much larger. The company has just launched a “powered by TiVo” program that will bring the apps’ Live Guide and content searching to cable TV providers, whether or not there’s a TiVo box attached. While those with generic hardware will miss a large chunk of the original experience, the features are the same underneath — recording and remote control are still around for the TiVo faithful. Atlantic Broadband will be the first to deploy a customized app in tandem with TiVo hardware in the fall, and we wouldn’t be surprised if others follow suit.

The Vikings head to the UK exclusively via Lovefilm

EDIT Lovefilm acquires exclusive rights to The Vikings in UK and Germany

Yearning to watch Norsemen amass loot while raiding foreign lands? If you’re in the UK, you can now watch US cable show The Vikings exclusively via Lovefilm Instant. The Amazon-owned service has made all nine episodes of the historical drama — shown in the US and in Canada on History Channel — available for streaming. The service’s subscribers in Germany won’t be left out, but as the show isn’t slated to go live for them until June 15th, they have a bit of waiting to do. This new addition to Lovefilm’s roster is a clear effort by the service to bolster its TV show offerings, seeing as it’s struggling to catch up to Netflix UK in that area. Lovefilm also inked a deal with Warner Bros in April to air popular TV titles One Tree Hill, The West Wing and Nip Tuck, although Netflix will have its own exclusive when Arrested Development season four launches tomorrow.
