Canon - New "Bay Blue" EOS M - color created by famous Japanese art director will be added to Canon's popular single-lens reflex mirrorless camera series "EOS M"

Canon’s single-lens reflex mirrorless camera series “EOS M” that won a 2012 Good Design Award will add its new color “Bay Blue” on April 25. The color was created by popular Japanese art director Chie Morimoto under the theme of “Travel”.

We wrote about the Canon single-lens reflex mirrorless camera EOS M last year.

Chie Morimoto has been engaged in art works for many popular Japanese musicians such as Mr. Children, and recently she is famous for working on a TV commercial series for apparel brand, Kumikyoku.

Hands-on redux: Creative’s Interactive Gesture Camera at IDF 2013 Beijing (video)

Handson with Creative's Interactive Gesture Camera at IDF Beijing 2013 video

At IDF 2013 in Beijing, Intel is again making a big push for perceptual computing by way of voice recognition, gesture control, face recognition and more, and to complement its free SDK for these functions, Intel’s been offering developers a Creative Interactive Gesture Camera for $149 on its website since November. For those who missed it last time, this time-of-flight depth camera is very much just a smaller cousin of Microsoft’s Kinect sensor, but with the main difference being this one is designed for a closer proximity and can therefore also pick up the movement of each finger.

We had a go on Creative’s camera with some fun demos — including a quick level of gesture-based Portal 2 made with Intel’s SDK — and found it to be surprisingly sensitive, but we have a feeling that it would’ve been more fun if the camera was paired up with a larger display. Intel said Creative will be commercially launching this kit at some point in the second half of this year, and eventually the same technology may even be embedded in monitors or laptops (remember Toshiba’s laptops with Cell-based gesture control?). Until then, you can entertain yourselves with our new hands-on video after the break.

NAB 2013 wrap-up: Sony 4K TVs, Red, Blackmagic, Thunderbolt and more!

DNP NAB 2013 wrapup

The National Association of Broadcasters’ annual event in Vegas may not offer the same blitz of high-profile gadgets as CES, but this show is hardly a quiet one. In fact, the excitement kicked off before the floor even opened, with Sony announcing pricing for its 55- and 65-inch 4K TVs. When 25 grand is the norm for these high-end sets, MSRPs of $5,000 and $7,000 seem downright budget-friendly. Blackmagic’s $995 Pocket Cinema Camera also made headlines for its value proposition, with a Super-16 Cinema sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount rounding out a very solid spec list.

Our favorite booth, however, belonged to Red. The company was performing its Dragon upgrade on-site, giving showgoers a fascinating look at the process of boosting the sensor to 6K — we were even able to snag an exclusive look inside the sacred space. Finally, Intel announced the next generation of its Thunderbolt interface, promising double the throughput and expanded 4K support. But those are just the highlights; check out our complete coverage after the break for the full rehash.

Thanko – Waterproof, mountable video camera – take “frighteningly-beautiful quality” video

Thanko - Waterproof, mountable video camera - take "frighteningly-beautiful quality" video

This new product “Bikkurisurukurai Kireini Toreru Bosui Video Camera” (Waterproof video camera that makes it possible to take frighteningly-beautiful quality video) manufactured by Thanko consists of 2 units: a video camera and waterproof housing case.  Just like the product name implies, you can take 1920 x 1080p Full HD video with high frame rate (60FPS, 720p).

This appears to be a lower cost alternative to Gopro cameras.

The waterproof housing case allows you to take videos under water, for example, in order for you to film your outdoor activities such as surfing, skiing, scuba diving etc. Several attachment parts to set up the video camera on a bicycle, surfboard, and helmet come with the product.

Also, it’s usable as a drive recorder. By using an attached cigarette socket adapter, the video camera operates simultaneously with the car’s engine. When the engine starts, the video camera starts filming and when the engine stops, the video camera stops filming.

Laser scans objects in 3D from half a mile away, scientists just need reason to use it

Laser scans objects in 3D from half a mile away, scientists look for excuse to fire it

3D scanning at a range of 0.62 miles? It just became possible, thanks to a laser camera developed by physicists at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. You can pretty much see how it works from the images above — laser beams are bounced off the target and the duration of their return journey is measured precisely enough to detect millimeter depth changes even at extreme distances. Speaking of which, the researchers believe they could pump the range up to 10 miles with a bit of extra research, and even shrink the blaster down to make it “fully portable” in less than five years. Who knows, someday it might even work around corners. But there’s a problem: skin doesn’t reflect the beams properly, which means people can’t be accurately scanned unless they also happen to be ringwraiths. As a result, the researchers seem slightly at loss as to what to do with the technology, with their best suggestions so far being watching the growth of foliage or tracking the movement of rocks. We’d try to think up some other ideas, were it not for the distracting and utterly irrelevant Nazgul v Wilhelm video embedded after the break.
