Samsung unveils 3D-capable NX300 mirrorless camera and 45mm f/1.8 2D/3D lens ahead of CES (eyes-on)

Samsung unveils 3Dcapable NX300 mirrorless camera and 45mm f18 2D3D lens eyeson

TVs and robotic vacuums aren’t the only Smart-branded devices Samsung will be showing off at this year’s CES. We just met with the company here in NYC to take a look at its newest entrant into the camera game, dubbed the NX300. No, it’s not Android-equipped, but this 20.3-megapixel APS-C shooter stands as its new flagship mirrorless model, boasting a key gimmick feature of 3D capability for stills and videos (up to 1080p at 60fps) thanks to a new DRIMe IV processor.

Getting the usual numbers aside, you’ll be able to harness an ISO range of 100 to 25600, a maximum shutter speed of 1,6000 and a top speed of 8.6fps for JPG bursts. On back, you’ll find a 3.31-inch, 768 dot AMOLED touch-display, and a d-pad-esque section with five buttons for manual control. Lastly, there’s a dedicated mode dial on the top, along with a full-size hot shoe mount. This shooter is also WiFi-enabled like previous cameras in the range, allowing you to share content wirelessly and giving you access to apps, like a remote viewfinder that works with iOS and Android devices.

Having a new NX that can handle 3D naturally calls for a lens that can shoot it, and a 2D/3D-capable f/1.8 45mm lens was also shown to us — a “world-first,” according to Sammy. While you won’t be able to shoot in 3D with older NX cameras (we’re told they don’t have the processing power), it’ll still work as regular 2D lens if you’re interested in its focal perspective. We spent a few fleeting moments with an engineering sample of the camera in-hand, so join us past the break for more.

Y-cam’s HomeMonitor and Cube camera helps you monitor babies, burglars from the cloud

Ycam launches HomeMonitor and Cube cameras to help you monitor babies and burglars from the cloud

The downside of a consumer society is that we need to protect our smartphones with as much vigor as our babies. Fortunately, the price of freedom isn’t eternal vigilance, but $200, paid straight to Y-Cam, makers of the WiFi Baby. It’s releasing the HomeMonitor, a secure, cloud-connected camera that lets you stalk / observe your offspring or prized possessions over the internet with a smartphone or tablet. An indoor variant is $200, while a weatherproofed version for scanning the frontiers of your home will set you back $350 and both will drop shortly. At the same time, you can pick up the Cube, a night-vision IP camera designed for professionals that’ll cost you between $200 and $350, depending on the resolution you plump for, when it arrives in February.

Polaroid plans experimental Fotobar stores that will let you print your photos

Polaroid plans experimental Fotobar stores that will let you print your photos

Polaroid hasn’t been shy to try various tactics as it attempts to compete in the age of digital photography, but it always seems to come back to the idea it’s best known for. It’s latest effort is a bit more of a roundabout way to get some tangible photos in your hands, though: a series of “experimental” Photobar stores where you can go and have your digital photos professionally printed. The first of those will open in Delray Beach, Florida in February, with a total of at least ten stores promised for 2013, including locations in New York, Las Vegas and Boston — each staffed with so-called Photenders to help you get the best results, and equipped with a “patent-pending proprietary technology” that’ll let you wirelessly transfer photos from your phone to a workstation. What’s more, the stores won’t just be producing glossy photos, but what Polaroid describes as handcrafted pieces using canvas, metal, acrylic, wood or bamboo — those will be shipped to the customer within 72 hours, and are apparently of the same variety that can currently be ordered on Polaroid’s Photobar website. You’ll still need to get your Polaroid film elsewhere, though.

RIM busts Mr. Blurrycam, patents tech to ‘prevent inconspicuous use of cameras’

RIM patents tech to 'prevent inconspicuous use of cameras' through steady focus requirement

RIM’s own smartphones have been the target of many a “Mr. Blurrycam” snap, but a new feature could put an end to “inconspicuous” shooting, according to a patent issued today. The tool would be in line with the company’s mission to protect corporations from security vulnerabilities, which include not only unauthorized access to data, but also leaks from employees. According to the patent, “the camera restriction prevents a user from taking a picture of a subject if the device has not been steadily focused on the subject in question for a predetermined period of time.” Just how long you need to keep your BlackBerry still could be dictated by individual IT departments, which would also have the power to flip the switch and push restrictions to an employee’s device. While such a delay would certainly be an inconvenience for frequent shooters, it is a step forward from RIM’s traditional strategy of shipping models without cameras altogether. We haven’t seen any indication that such a technology will be implemented with future models, but thanks to the minds at RIM, patent junkies can get their fix now at the source link below.
