Samsung Galaxy NX mirrorless camera appears in press shots, may launch later this month

Samsung Galaxy NX mirrorless camera appears in press shots, launch expected later this month

Samsung’s mobile chief JK Shin hinted that the company would soon be announcing an Android-powered mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, and now the Galaxy NX is all but official. In press shots appearing on a Vietnamese gadget site, the device is pictured with a mirrorless mount and a trio of NX lenses. Judging from the body, the camera is likely to be closer in size to a DSLR than Samsung’s existing CSC lineup, with a large touchscreen occupying much of the rear.

Hardware controls are few and far between, and may be limited to a shutter release, video capture button, top-mounted dial and a pop-up flash release, along with the compulsory lens release to the left of the swappable optic. It’s said to include Android 4.2, a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, ISO sensitivity through 25,600 and 1080p video capture. Pricing info is still up in the air, as is an official announce date, which could very well be as soon as Samsung’s June 20th event in London. Hit up the source for a few more shots.

JVC unveils $18,000 4K interchangeable lens camcorder with Nikon F-mount

JVC unveils 4K camcorder with Nikon Fmount

Lovers of 4K and Nikon glass, rejoice: JVC has just launched a 4K large-sensor camcorder that will use Nikon F-mount lenses. The JY-HMQ30 camera will operate in manual focus mode only — even with AF glass — though f-stop settings will be controllable in-camera for modern lenses with no aperture ring. As with the company’s fixed lens GY-HMQ10, the interchangeable model will record AVC/H.264 4K video at up to 60 fps onto four separate SDHC cards, each capturing an HD-sized quadrant with a total maximum data rate of 144Mbps — and also capture 1080/60p video at 28Mbps onto a single card. Other features include a JVC 4K clip manager that’ll convert files to Apple’s ProRes422 codec, live 4K, 60 fps output to a monitor or portable recorder, 4K time-lapse recording, a focus assist function and stereo XLR microphone inputs. Though the company’s taking orders for the 1.7 million yen ($18,000) camera starting today in Japan, there’s no word yet on availability or pricing stateside — but you can probably start polishing up those Nikon lenses soon.

Yahoo’s spending spree continues: conference call and photo apps, Sky News streaming deal

Yahoos spending spree continues video chat, photo app buys and Sky News streaming deals

After blowing $1.1 billion on Tumblr, we’d assumed that Yahoo would need a lie down in a darkened room while its accountants hunted around for more cash. Turns out that it was just the first in a raft of new deals, including several that the company has made in the last week. First up, the search firm has splashed out on free conference-calling service Rondee, which has been folded into Yahoo’s small business team. Then there’s GhostBird software, makers of iOS photography apps KitCam and PhotoForge, which will now be folded into Flickr’s mobile offerings. Finally, Yahoo has signed up with the UK’s Sky News to broadcast morning show Sunrise online, as well as the main Sky News feed during breaking news events. There’s no word on how much this spending spree has cost, so we’ll keep an ear out for any anguished screams emanating out of 701 1st Ave., Sunnyvale.

Samsung chief alludes to ‘mirrorless’ Galaxy Camera sequel coming June 20th

Samsung confirms Galaxy Camera sequel coming June 20th

We had a feeling the little Galaxy S4 Zoom wouldn’t be the final word in Samsung’s Android-powered camera lineup for 2013, and now it seems that a truer successor to the high-spec Galaxy Camera is indeed on its way. As quoted by the Korea Times, JK Shin has confirmed that a “mirrorless camera that runs on Google’s Android software” will launch at the company’s forthcoming event in London on June 20th, which will likely also show off other Galaxy-branded products. Assuming no mistranslations have gotten in the way, the reference to a “mirrorless” camera implies the existence of an interchangeable lens system, suggesting that the new Galaxy Camera might be more akin to Samsung’s NX range of cameras than to its cheaper point-and-shoots. If that’s the case, then this could be a significant upgrade in terms of sensor size and image quality, but at this point there’s still very little we can say for sure.

Nikon - The 80 millionth NIKKOR lens has been manufactured, coinciding with the NIKKOR's brand's 80th anniversary

Nikon Corporation has announced that the cumulative number of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses manufactured by the company has reached 80 million.

Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku), launched its single-lens reflex camera “Nikon F” in 1959, and at the same time released the “Nikon F” “NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f / 2″, the first “NIKKOR” lens. Since the launch of this lens, the line-up has been expanded while leading the optics market in Japan and around the world.

This includes the start, in October 2011, of the “Nikon 1″ which increased the pace of sales on NIKKOR lenses. The company reached the milestone of 75 million lenses in early November 2012, and now has already hit the 80 million mark.

Many different lenses have been introduced as part of the company’s new lineups. For example, since the beginning of 2013, as an interchangeable lens for Nikon single-lens reflex cameras, 3 lenses were released including FX format compliant 5x telephoto zoom lens “AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR”.

Regarding the “1 NIKKOR” lens for interchangeable lens advanced camera “Nikon 1″, after 2013, 3 lenses were released including 10X zoom lens “1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f/4-5.6″.

Nikon is also celebrating the 80th anniversary of the NIKKOR brand which is considered the benchmark by many in the optics and camera industries.

The video below is really interesting and was made to commemorate the brand’s 80th anniversary.
