BMW ActiveE: $499 a Month Lease by Year’s End

BMW_ActiveE_0049.JPG

Such a deal: By year’s end, you can lease an electric BMW 1 Series, the ActiveE, for $499 a month if you’re part of a trial that kicks off in six major urban areas: San Diego, LA, San Franciso, Sacramento, Boston, and New York. Range should be about 100 miles using lithium-ion batteries. You’ll be able to impress neighbors with the usual electric car party tricks such as showing everyone the state of charge of your smartphone (photo below), and a couple new-with-BMW tricks such as pre-heating or pre-cooling the car while it’s still plugged in (to extend range). And of course it’s going to handle like a BMW, something the Nissan Leaf can’t claim.

Am I Worthy of an Electric Car? (Yes, There’s an App for That)

BMW_Evolve_0062.JPG

“Is an electric car for me?” BMW Monday announced Evolve, a platform-agnostic smartphone app that tracks your current driving habits and distances, then tells you if you’re a candidate for an electric car with its typical 100-mile driving range. It’s out for the iPhone now and is due on Android by month’s end.

Why a Car Company (BMW) Launched a Smartphone Venture Fund

iventure.jpgBMW has started I Venture, a $100 million venture capital fund based in New York City, to pursue what it calls “individual mobility solutions.” Why would a car company try to advance technologies that benefit smartphones and tablets as much or more than cars? Because automakers would like to help you out during (and profit from) the entire trip, including when you leave the car, and that requires a seamless handoff when you open the door. I Venture already has one investment, MyCityWay, which comprise location-aware apps that could help you find parking, get around using a subway or bus, and of course find you restaurants, bars, and shops.

MOG: Mini Adds More Cloud-Based Audio Streaming

Mini_MOG_P90074062_highRes.gif

Mini will be adding the MOG on-demand music streaming service via its Mini Connected application. For $10 a month, the motorist can choose the music that plays through his or her iPhone and then through the Mini’s head unit. It’s broadly similar to the Pandora streaming music service except Pandora provides cheaper music (free to $5 a month) without the ability to pick and choose exactly what plays. The required Mini Connected app is free at the iTunes store, but the hardware requirements add $1,250 to the price of a new Mini.

Tesla Sues BBC Car Show

tesla.jpg

Tesla’s looking to take reality shows to a whole new level. The high end electric car manufacturer has sued the British Broadcasting Corporation, alleging that its Top Gear program faked a racing scene involving one of the company’s vehicles. In the scene, the Tesla vehicle grinds to a halt after running out of energy.

The episode itself actually dates back to 2008–the car maker was prompted to file this suit this week, after it came out on DVD and began airing on global repeats. Tesla is looking to collecting around £100,000 in damages, citing the BBC’s failure to correct the faulty results. Telsa is suing for libel and malicious falsehood.
The BBC will be “vigorously” fighting the suit. Said a spokeswoman for the show, “We can confirm that we have received notification that Tesla have issued proceedings against the BBC. The BBC stands by the program and will be vigorously defending this claim”

Motorcycle Concept Speeds Into The Future

Looking for a little bit of Tron with your motorcycle racing? A group of French design students, in what is sure to go down as the coolest final project in history, has put together a concept bike that has clearly been stolen from the future via time-traveling DeLorean.  The Saline Bird concept bike has a carbon-fiber frame and uses a compressed-air engine to hit speed-record level quickness. As part of the bike’s sleek, smooth style, the body work is just a leather slip fitted over the internal parts. Switching it out just means taking one bit of leather off and putting another on.

The bike is made for the group Les Triplettes de Bonneville, who already hold four world speed records. Judging by their website, the team hits these mind-bending speeds on the Bonneville salt flats, regularly attending the SpeedWeek competitions. So, if you want to catch a glimpse of the closest thing to a light-bike, Nevada is a lot easier to get to than The Grid.

Homeless Man Builds Car From Scrap

carro620.jpgAs any regular Car Talk listener will tell you, old Fiats aren’t exactly known for being the most durable cars in the world. A homeless man in Brazil took advantage of the discarded shells of these junkers and threw together a brand new car, built entirely from scrap. Starting with a 125cc motorcycle engine, Orismar de Souza was able to put together a working vehicle, capable of hitting 50mph on the highway and featuring such luxuries as a reverse gear and an actual car starter to replace the kickstarter of the 125cc engine. It also sports an in-dash stereo.

After panhandling in the streets for months to raise the $270 he needed for the car’s metal plating, de Souza built the body panels by hand, borrowing a chisel and hammer as tools for the job. Most of the other parts used in making the car came from old discarded Fiats. His previous experience with metalworking led him to be confident in his automotive creation, but that didn’t stop others from telling him that his project was just a joke. The looks on their faces after the car hit 50 must have been priceless.

The finished machine was able to help de Souza land both a home and a job, a fitting end to this inspiring DIY story. And I have a feeling his car is even more reliable than the ones he built it from. At least if it breaks down, no one will tell him he can’t fix it.

GM Adds 14 New Vehicles You Can Control with the OnStar Mobile App

OnStar - Unlock

Back at CES a couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to see the OnStar mobile app in action with a pre-production model of the Chevy Volt. Now that the Volt is on the roads and the OnStar mobile app works with a number of other GM vehicles, more and more people know the joy of being able to start your car, lock or unlock your doors, flash your lights, and even check your vehicle’s health from your iPhone, Android phone, or BlackBerry.
GM announced this week that they were expanding the mobile app services to 14 additional vehicles, including the 2010 Cadillac DTS, Escalade, Escalade ESV and EXT, the Buick Enclave and Lucerne, the GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, and Acadia, and the Chevrolet Impala, Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe, and Traverse. This list is unfortunately dominated by large SUVs – the kind people are less inclined to buy at times like now when gasoline prices are high, but it’s good news for smartphone lovers who love their cars nonetheless.
Owners of these new vehicles will be able to install the mobile app on their devices and use it to interface with their cars from anywhere they have cellular service, even if it’s on the other side of the world. GM said that there are even plans to expand navigation services to the mobile app, so drivers can search for destinations using their phone and then send it to their vehicle’s on-board OnStar device.

Apple Under Fire Over “Anti-Gay” App

iPhone Exodus app.jpg

Apple has come under fire for its App Store yet again. This time it’s from the gay community, which has expressed outrage at the release of a self-titled app from Exodus International, a church that describes itself as “the world’s largest ministry to individuals and families impacted by homosexuality.”

Non-profit gay rights group Truth Wins Out called Apple out over the decision to allow the app in its store, citing examples of the company’s traditionally friendly relationship with the gay community,
Apple has long been a friend of the LGBT community, opposing California’s Proposition 8, removing the anti-gay Manhattan Declaration iPhone app, and earning a 100% score from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.”I am shocked that this same company has given the green light to an app from a notoriously anti-gay organization like Exodus International that uses scare tactics, misinformation, stereotypes and distortions of LGBT life to recruit clients, endorses the use of so-called ‘reparative therapy’ to ‘change’ the sexual orientation of their clients.
The organization has started a petition that has since gained well over 17,000 signatures condemning the app. The church, on the other hand, has described the app as a “useful resource for men, women, parents, students, and ministry leaders.”

Gary Busey’s Voice Added to GPS Media Company’s Repertoire

garybusey.jpg

Two things to confirm here – yes, Garey Busey will soon be able to direct you to your destination, and yes, there is actually a company that specializes in obtaining and selling celebrity GPS voices.

Wanderlust Media, which claims it is “the global leader in celebrity and branded voice content for the GPS navigation industry,” has just signed the always entertaining Busey to make our commutes a bit more…well, insane?

Busey, who is elegantly described in an episode of Family Guy as “frequently aggressive in situations that don’t call for it,” joins Wanderlust’s collection of David Hasselhoff, Mr. T, Flavor Flav, and others in celebrity GPS voices being licensed to manufacturers all across the industry.
