The IDx Nismo is also accompanied by a very similar concept car called the IDx Freeflow. Nissan says that these cars are its attempt to lure in younger generations who aren’t that interested in cars.

Anyone familiar with past Nissan and Datsun models will recognize the profile as being similar to the classic Datsun 510.

Nissan is rumored to be working on a car aimed at combating the Subaru BRZ and it’s Scion twin, the FR-S. I hope this is the car, because the Nismo version looks fantastic.

Nissan says that the IDx Nismo would use a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine combined with a CVT transmission featuring a six-speed manual shift mode and synchronized rev match control. That sounds a lot like the powertrain in the current Nissan Juke, and the car isn’t exactly a rocket ship. It’s also unclear if these concept cars are front-wheel-drive or rear wheel drive. What is clear is that they both look very cool.

New MINI Gets Bigger, But It’s Smaller under the Hood

A new version of the venerable MINI Cooper that has been around for decades will be unveiled this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new Mini is getting both larger and smaller at the same time. The vehicle will grow physically larger while getting a smaller engine to help improve fuel economy.

MINI has extended the length of its new car by almost 4 inches. Mini promises that the extra length will be used throughout the cabin, increasing both passenger and cargo space. That extra space will definitely add to the leg room inside what is traditionally a very cramped car. While the car gets longer, it’s standard engine is getting smaller. The MINI hard top will be getting a new three-cylinder engine to improve fuel economy.

The three-cylinder engine will be a 1.4-liter unit producing 134 hp using a turbocharger. It will be paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed automatic. The three-cylinder engine will be able to push the car to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. Drivers wanting more power will be able to opt for the Cooper S using a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 192 hp. MINI will also offer a 116hp diesel model, the Mini Cooper D, which is designed specifically for fuel economy.

F1 Car Made from Hundreds of Hard Drives

This F1 race car is a bit unusual. It is made from hundreds and hundreds of hard drives and that makes it look pretty awesome. Can you believe that those curves all come from hard drive parts? It was created by Western Digital’s Rob Ryan in a stunning bit of promotional marketing.

The tires are the only things not made from a Western Digital drive. The wheel hubs are made from 10,000rpm drive motors in the front and 7200rpm motors in the rear. They actually spin, having been milled down in a CNC machine. The side panels are a cluster of server-friendly WD Red hard drive parts, while the actuators form the front wing of the car. The rear wing is a combination of WD Velociraptor and Scorpio actuators.

There are even a stack of disk motors in the middle of the car for the driver’s head. Behind that is the replica V12 engine, assembled from 12 Western Digital Scorpio notebook hard drives. Even the LEDs in the body were taken from WD My Passport external hard drives. This thing is quite a piece of work. The detail is just stunning. Best use of hard drives yet!

Griffin Moto TC Rally Proves Rubbin’ Is Racing

If you ever watched a professional automotive racing event, whether it was NASCAR or something else, you undoubtedly noticed that the cars tend to bump into each other a lot. The more the vehicles bump into each other, the more their performance is degraded. Griffin has unveiled a new iOS controlled racing car called the Moto TC Rally that brings the “rubbin’ is racing” mentality to the toy world.

The Moto TC Rally is a remote control car that uses an iOS application for control. The coolest part about the car is its Bump n’ Run feature. That feature uses impact sensors around the car to know when your competitors run into you. You can score points for causing damage to competitors and the more virtual damage your vehicle sustains, the worse your car handles and drives.

You can also just race the cars and the app has a built-in lap counter. The app also offers a number of power ups allowing you to repair your vehicle and add virtual armor. You can also deploy attacks on your opponents including the ability to mix up their controls and make them go slower. The Moto TC Rally is available now for $99.99(USD).

This unusual looking single-seat car gets an amazing 84 MPG on the highway, 49 MPG in the city, and travels at speeds up to 100 MPH. This car consumes just 1/3 of the gas that the average car does. The price? $6,800(USD). You can’t beat that.

Bonus: It is even made in the USA. The company estimates that they will create 1,500 jobs at their Shreveport, LA plant alone beginning in 2014. Let’s hope that automotive lobbyists and the government don’t kill the company before they can put a whole bunch on the road.

Hopefully they can impact the auto industry and provide people with affordable cars for many years. This is a company to watch closely.
