The Kia Optima Batmobile: Batman’s Spare Car

Kia Motors, DC Entertainment, and RIDES Magazine unveiled their first of 8 Justice League-inspired Kias at the recent 2012 New York Comic Con. The launch was part of DC’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, which helps fight famine in Africa.

This Batman-inspired Optima was on display at New York’s Time Warner Center and is the beginning of a 10-month partnership based on the characters that make up the Justice League. They hope to raise awareness of the charity campaign, which Batman would certainly approve of.

I’m not sure that Batman would ever buy a Kia, but I love what they have done with this car. It certainly looks great with the whole Batman theme – especially that grill.

Car & Bike Horn Mod is Bleepin’ Loud

Peter Olt nearly got into an accident when a car suddenly cut into his lane, unable to hear – or perhaps ignoring – his honking and cussing. The incident prompted him to make some noise, so to speak. Olt invented a loud vehicle horn called the Screaming Banshee. Now he’s raising money to produce a smaller variant, the Whining Siryn the Plug & Play Screamer.

plug and play screamer by screaming banshee

When installed, the Plug & Play Screamer gives you two horns. Tap your car or motorcycle’s horn button and you’ll get the standard sound. But if you hold it down you’ll get a 120dB sonic attack and your headlights flash for a split second.  The Screamer is quieter than the Screaming Banshee, which can go as loud as 139db, but it’s also easier to install. It has four wires – two connect to the stock horn, one to the battery and one to the high beam lights. Olt will also make easy to follow video instructions for newbies.

Pledge at least $79 (USD) on Olt’s Indiegogo fundraiser to reserve a Plug & Play Screamer. The only thing I don’t like about this invention is that it could be abused in the wrong hands. We have enough obnoxious drivers as it is.

Griffin Unveils Moto TC Monster and Moto TC Racer iOS R/C Cars

Griffin makes all sorts of accessories for Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad. The company has unveiled a couple of new toys that use iOS devices as controllers. The toys in question include a monster truck and little racing dune buggy called the Moto TC Monster and the Moto TC Racer.

The Monster is available right now and sells for $59.99(USD). It uses Bluetooth connectivity from the smartphone to send signals to the vehicle for control. The vehicle can be controlled using fingers on a virtual steering wheel or by tilting the device using its motion sensors. The controller app also features a slide controller where you can slide your finger back and forth to direct the truck.

Drivers can also set up a preset route to have the truck automatically run a specific route with no interaction. The Racer is a smaller buggy style car that will launch in the middle of November for $29.99. It will use an integrated RF sensor and an accessory that plugs into the headphone port of your device. Its app will support control using virtual steering wheel or motion. Both devices require iOS 5.0 or higher to operate.

First Nissan Juke-R is on its way to a customer

I have to admit that each time I see a normal Nissan Juke cruising around, I think it’s the ugliest vehicle I’ve ever seen. The first time I saw the Juke-R, I formed a completely different opinion of the car though. This special custom-made version of the little Juke actually looks kind of cool.

It combines slightly modified looks of the Juke-R with the fact that it has the twin turbo 3.8-liter V6 and all-wheel drive train from a 2013 GT-R, and I’m really interested. The first time we saw this customized Juke it was nothing but a publicity stunt on Nissan’s part. Then we found out Nissan would actually build these for anyone wealthy enough to afford the over $600,000 asking price.

Nissan has announced that the first production version of the Juke-R has been built and is on its way to its owner. The vehicle has 545 HP and is packed with racing seats, racing seatbelts, and a roll cage. This car was made for track driving and I would love to hoon one around a road course.

You might think that at $600,000 this would be the only version being constructed. However, Nissan says that a second production version is currently being built for another customer. If I were rich enough, I’d certainly have one of these in my garage, this may be the ultimate modern sleeper.

CarBot R/C Car Driven by Tablet or Smartphone

Over the years, I’ve seen more than a few remote-controlled toys that use the iPhone or other smartphones as their controller. Several of these little devices have come from a company called DeskPets. DeskPets is back with another cheap remote controlled toy that uses Android or iOS devices as the controller.

The new toy is called the CarBot and it is available in four different colors including red, blue, green, and yellow. Each of the different colors operates on its own infrared code allowing up to four of the cars to be used at one time. The car features a battle mode that lets players challenge each other and even fire virtual rockets at each other to take down their opponents.

The CarBot also has a maze mode that allows players to set up a maze for the toy to navigate precisely. It also has a personality mode with sounds and lights as well as a mute button for noiseless play.

The little CarBot is able to race at up to 2 feet-per-second, and recharges using an integrated USB connector. It takes 40 minutes of charging for about 15 minutes of play. The CarBot can be purchased now at Brookstone, Best Buy, and Toys “R” Us stores for $29.99 (USD).

Nissan to offer steer-by-wire systems in some Infiniti cars

Nissan to offer steerbywire systems in some Infinity cars

We’re all at least somewhat familiar with fly-by-wire, the electronic piloting system found in most modern planes. Nissan wants to bring the same tech to cars, leaving behind the purely mechanical solutions currently used to take turns in your four-wheeler. The first automobiles to come equipped with steer-by-wire would be luxury sedans from Infiniti. Other companies have incorporated the tech into concept vehicles, but Nissan would be the first to stick it in a production model. The company plans to have the first drive-by-wire cars in consumer garages by the end of next year, with an eye towards a future in which you drive from the back seat using a joystick. Of course, the lack of direct feedback as your tires turn over the road may lead some to cling tight to their mechanical steering apparatus, though, moving to a digital steering system should lead to better handling vehicles.

Hyundai to wire cars with Broadcom ethernet tech, put infotainment and security systems on one network

Hyundai to wire cars with Broadcom ethernet tech, put infotainment and security systems on one network

Cars wired with ethernet may conjure thoughts of roving internet hotspots, but that’s not what Hyundai and Broadcom have in mind in this case. Traditionally, infotainment consoles, safety systems and the like are built on multiple in-car networks, but the duo will rig vehicles with modified ethernet cables to unify some of the disparate systems on a single network. Dubbed BroadR-Reach, the tech uses a single pair of unshielded wires to offer 100Mbps connection speeds and could scale up to 1Gbps. Though Hyundai and other automakers joined with Broadcom’s standards group for the technology last year, the firm is now the second car manufacturer to pledge that its autos will get the tech. As of now, there’s still no word on which models will be lined with ethernet or when they’ll roll off assembly lines.

Visualized: Google Street View car fleet gets ready to conquer (and map) the world

Visualized Google Street View car fleet gets ready to conquer and map the world

Ever wonder how Google can make such grandiose claims for the sheer amount of Street View imagery it collects? Here’s how. Google’s Masrur Odinaev has posted a snapshot of a central mapping car parking lot that shows dozens of the camera-equipped Subaru Imprezas amassed ahead of future runs. While it already represents more Street View cars in one place than anyone outside of Google would normally ever see, what’s most impressive is remembering that this addresses just a portion of the entire vehicle mix — aside from the local cars you don’t see in the photo, there are extra units worldwide providing street-level coverage alongside tricycles and underwater expeditions. Odinaev’s look reminds us just how much effort is needed to make Street View a common feature — and that there are are legions of Google staffers whose low-profile work goes a long way towards making our navigation easier.

Rimac e-M3 breaks EV acceleration records, soon to be dethroned by its own creator (video)

Rimac eM3 breaks EV acceleration records, soon to be dethroned by its own creator video

The last time we saw an EV pit itself against a BMW, it wasn’t a good day for the German car. On this occasion, the beemer is the EV, and it’s one that all the others will officially have to enjoy viewing from behind. The car in question is the Rimac e-M3, the fledgling EV-firm owner’s personal custom ride, and it’s just been officially acknowledged as the fastest accelerating electric vehicle (with some category caveats). The record-breaking run actually happened April 2011, but it seems the FIA isn’t quite so fast when it comes to making things official. The Croatian driver covered the first eighth of a mile in 7.549 seconds, needing less than five more for the same distance again (1/4 mile in 11.808 seconds). This is where the official-dom ends, but the total mile was completed in 35.347, which is still pending the FIA nod. Happy as driver Mate Rimac is, he already thinks there’s something faster. What might that be? His new pre-production Concept_One of course. Catch the car in action after the break.

Porsche unveils new Cayenne Turbo S

I’ll admit that when Porsche first announced that it was coming up with an SUV called the Cayenne, I was rather irritated that a sports car company was pandering to the SUV driving masses. Once the SUV hit the market and I saw that it was as quick as many sports cars I felt a little bit better about Porsche offering an SUV. Porsche has unveiled the new Cayenne Turbo S and this is one SUV I would really enjoy owning.

Porsche claims that the Cayenne Turbo S has advanced active chassis technologies that allow it to surpass the driving performance of many sports cars. At the same time, the SUV still preserves its off-road capability, ride comfort, and towing ability. I can’t see anyone driving one of these off-road, but I have seen people towing with a Cayenne before. Naturally, the guy was towing a 911 GT3.

The Cayenne Turbo S gets a 50 hp bump compared to the normal Cayenne Turbo. The Cayenne Turbo S also gets a extra torque with a rating of 553 pound-feet of torque compared to the normal Cayenne Turbo 516 pound-feet rating. The extra horsepower and torque allows the Turbo S version to accelerate quicker and have a higher top speed.

Porsche claims that the Cayenne Turbo S can hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 175 mph. That is a seriously quick SUV. The Turbo S comes with the Sport Chrono package standard that includes an analog and digital timer in the center of the dash. The package also shows total driving time, lap distance covered, and individual lap times along with latitudinal and longitudinal acceleration. Clearly, Porsche expects people to take this big SUV on the track. Pricing for the Turbo S starts at $146,000.
