Samsung has quietly formed a new carbon-fiber joint venture that will see the company develop new casings and components for electronics, among other things, paving the way for lightweight but super-strong phones and tablets. The new Samsung SGL Carbon Composite Materials JV comes as the Samsung Petrochemical division inks a deal with SGL Group, a
The eternal debate—of whether to soak in the tub or lounge in a hammock—has just been rendered moot, thanks to this stunning carbon fiber hammock tub that lets you do both at the same time. Made by the UK company SplinterWorks, it’s called the Vessel, and it makes for an awesome centerpiece for your bathroom, assuming you’ve got the room for it (and the cash).
Children are impossible to please, no matter now many Lunchables you ply them with. But even the most ungrateful tykes will appreciate getting one of Mores stunning Petitpierre kids bikes crafted from carbon fiber so they’re easier to ride and maneuver.
Lightweight carbon fiber is a must on any so-called “hypercar,” but what about a car that was named after the element carbon itself? How does it stack up against the rarefied competition? You needn’t worry, because it will probably smoke any other car away, thanks to its awesome power-to-weight ratio.
The Lamborghini Sesto Elemento’s name simply means “sixth element” in Italian, and it’s a two-door, two-seater, lightweight limitededition hypercar. Naturally, it makes extensive use of carbon fiber. Its chassis, body, drive shaft, and suspension are made out of the durable, lightweight stuff. The whole car weighs an astonishingly light 999kg (2,200 lbs), which is comparable to a subcompact car like the Honda Fit.
The car has an all-wheel-drive system, which is mated to a 5.2L V10 engine generating 578 HP. The six-speed, semi-automatic transmission comes with paddle shifters, of course.
All of this engineering helps the Sesto Elemento go from 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds. Holy speed demons, Batman, better hold onto your shorts!

When a company like Lamborghini describes a car as “extreme” then you know it’s going to be uncompromising; unsurprisingly, then, the Sesto Elemento takes no prisoners on its first trip to the track. Designed as a limited edition to demonstrate the Italian company’s carbon fiber talents, the 999kg Sesto Elemento is capable of a 0-62mph
Years of hunching over his laptop took its toll on James Olander. He claims that the damage on his nerves reached an extent that he was advised by his doctors to lay off laptops or he might not be able to type again. Fortunately, James is an engineer. So he designed a laptop stand that can help him and the millions of other people who have hunchedoverlaptoposis. Or whatever its medical name is.
James calls his laptop stand The Roost. There are hundreds of different laptop stands already on the market, so why would you want The Roost? It’s not on fire, but there are three things that make The Roost stand out. First is the sheer height at which it can raise a laptop:
Here’s another shot that shows just how high it raises the screen:
Unless everything else in the image above is really tiny, I’d say that the MacBook Air is at or maybe even above eye level there. The second advantage of The Roost over other stands is that it folds into a very compact shape. Finally, The Roost is made of carbon fiber and a flexible and durable plastic, making it strong enough to support up to 200lb. even though it only weighs 5oz.
Pledge at least $65 (USD) on Kickstarter to get The Roost as a reward. You can check its official website for the list of compatible laptops.

Koenigsegg Aircore carbon fiber wheels appear in metal-free, hollow construction
Posted in: Today's ChiliCarbon fiber is a great piece of technology. It can replace metals in many instances, including car wheels like the new Aircore wheels from Koenigsegg, which come with the auto maker’s new 2013 Agera R automobile. These are made from pure carbon fiber, with the spokes and hub of the wheel being completely hollow and constructed in one piece.
Koenigsegg says that the only metal part of the wheel is the air valve that allows for filling up the tire. The company also claims that the wheel’s strength is “much higher than any forged aluminium wheel,” and it weighs a lot less than a traditional wheel. According to the auto maker, it’s carbon fiber wheel weighs 40% less than a forged aluminum wheel.
The video above demonstrates the lightness of the Aircore wheels, and while Koenigsegg didn’t reveal any technical specifications for the new carbon fiber wheel, we can clearly tell that the wheel has “5950 gram” inscribed on the wall of the wheel, which converts to around 13 pounds, which is quite impressive.
As for the car that the new wheels are being equipped on, the Agera R is claimed to have a top speed of 273 mph, which is faster than the Bugatti Veyron, which recently held the record for the world’s fastest car. Koenigsegg says that the Agera R can go from 0 mph to 200 mph in 17.68 seconds, and vice versa in just 7.28 seconds.

I’m not a musician. I never learned to play the guitar, although I tried when I was a kid. When I couldn’t go from beginner to full-on rock star in a month I gave it up. But despite my lack of musical ability, one thing I do know is that guitars can be pretty easily broken. If you’re the sort of person that likes to travel off the beaten path and keep your guitar handy, a fragile wooden guitar can be a problem. This is where a company called Alpaca steps in with its durable Carbon Fiber Travel Guitar.
Not only is carbon fiber lightweight, it’s also incredibly strong allowing the guitar to go anywhere the musician might want with the ability to withstand elements. In addition to carbon fiber, the guitar is created from flax fabric, and bio-derived resins.
Alpaca promises that this combination of materials creates an incredibly strong instrument that still offers a brilliant resonant sound. The guitar also has an embedded daisychain on the back giving a universal attachment to any of your outdoor gear, and its strap is made from rugged paracord. The Alpaca Guitar is built in the United States and will cost you $575(USD).
The only downside is that you can’t smash this thing on stage.
The new model “GW-A1100″ from Casio’s SKY COCKPIT series will be out on June 28. With high-accuracy direction measurement performance, reinforced architecture and improved readability.
Casio’s analog drive system moves the watch’s hands by multiple motors and sensor technology which together make this a crash-proof watch.
For the watch’s hands, carbon-fiber is used to keep stability even in harsh situations such as intense swing motion.

It looks like the Lamborghini Veneno just couldn’t wait to be shown off at the Geneva Motor Show event later today. The car has been revealed right before the show is set to take place, and it shows off the beauty of Italian craftsmanship. The Lamborghini Veneno was inspired by and created to mark Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, and it’s going to take on the likes of the McLaren P1 and the successor to the Ferrari Enzo.
The Lamborghini Veneno has a price tag of about $4,600,000 or around 3.5 million euros, which is unfortunately way over our budgets (or anyone’s budget who isn’t in the top 1%). But that’s alright, because Lamborghini only made three of these cars and all three have already been sold. Each car will feature one of the colors from the Italian flag (green, white or red) to show off their uniqueness. The Veneno being shown off at the Geneva Motor Show, however, will display all three colors on its door.
The Lamborghini Veneno’s design was based off of the Lamborghini Aventador. It sports a 740 horsepower 6.5 liter V12 with a seven-speed single-clutch ISR transmission and all-wheel-drive. The Lamborghini Veneno is reported to have a top speed of 220 miles per hour and will be able to go from 0-62 time in under 3 seconds. The Veneno will also feature a beautiful, all carbon fiber body.
The Veneno is truly a beauty and a beast and will spark envy amongst all of those attending the Geneva Motor Show. The owners of the Lamborghini Veneno, with two of them being located in the United States, will revel in the fact that they will possess a car that’s one of a kind. With the Veneno, the Ferrari Enzo, and the McLaren P1 being shown off tonight, the Geneva Motor Show looks like it will be incredible.
