Sprint launches LTE in 22 more cities

Sprint’s LTE cells have been popping up a lot lately, and today they’re spreading like the blazes — the carrier just flicked the (official) switch on its faster network in 22 new cities. The focus is primarily on southern locales like Baton Rouge, Miami, New Orleans and Tampa, although the expansion includes cooler climates like Lansing, Napa and Raleigh. The company is also teasing future rollouts for 13 more cities in Michigan, Texas and Washington state. If you want to know whether or not you’ll see the coveted 4G symbol this summer, Sprint has the full details after the break.

Verizon reportedly considers purchasing Canada’s Wind Mobile

Wind Mobile store

Competition in the Canadian cellphone space is on shaky ground when Wind Mobile faces an uncertain future. If The Globe and Mail‘s sources are accurate, however, Wind may get a lifeline from an unexpected source: Verizon. The US carrier has reportedly held “exploratory” talks for a possible takeover of Wind that would help the Canadian firm bid in the upcoming 700MHz auction, improving its chances against local giants Bell, Rogers and Telus. Mobilicity is also a potential acquisition target following Telus’ failed buyout, according to the tipsters. None of the involved parties are commenting at this stage, although Verizon couldn’t just walk into the Canadian market. The provider would have to deal with foreign ownership rules as well as the investment limits of its Vodafone partnership — and neither obstacle is likely to disappear overnight.

T-Mobile says MetroPCS’ network transition is ahead of schedule

TMobile says MetroPCS' network switch is ahead of schedule

T-Mobile is more than a little eager to justify its acquisition of MetroPCS. To its relief, there’s early evidence that the money was well spent: it says that MetroPCS’ switch to a blend of HSPA+ and LTE is ahead of schedule, and it cites the just-started Bring Your Own Phone program as proof. The bigger carrier is already planning to expand MetroPCS’ device mix, too. In addition to the recent launches of the Galaxy Exhibit and Optimus L9, T-Mobile’s refreshed Galaxy S III is due on June 17th. We won’t declare the transition a resounding success just yet, however — when T-Mobile only expects to finish converting MetroPCS customers by 2015, there’s still a lot of ground left to cover.

Finnish carrier DNA confirms it will be the first to launch Jolla phones running Sailfish

Jolla recently revealed its first phone, and now Finland-based carrier DNA has confirmed it will be the first operator in the world to offer the self-titled handset. Running the Sailfish operating system, these devices continue on a path blazed by Meego while also promising Android app compatibility out of the box. The Jolla phone features 4.5-inch “HD” display, dual-core CPU, 16GB storage with microSD expansion slot, LTE and an 8MP rear camera. Our hands-on demo should reveal a bit more about what it’s bringing to the table (including an interesting split design that could allow future hardware augmentation), interested local residents can hit the source link to pre-order one now.

MetroPCS launches GSM-based Bring Your Own Phone service in four cities

MetroPCS launches BYOD service for GSM phones in four cities

We’d heard rumors that T-Mobile would take advantage of its MetroPCS deal to offer bring-your-own-device service to more customers, and it isn’t letting us down with the launch of MetroPCS’ Bring Your Own Phone. Much like T-Mobile itself, MetroPCS can now offer its plans to customers with unlocked GSM phones. Don’t be too quick to hop aboard, however. Only those in Boston, Dallas, Hartford and Las Vegas can switch service right away, and the carrier’s official support is limited to Android, iPhone and Windows Phone devices. Should everything line up, though, Bring Your Own Phone is available today.

Leaks detail PC Mobile postpaid contract pricing, launch delays

Leaks detail PC Mobile postpaid contract pricing, launch delays

June 5th came and went, without the introduction of PC Mobile’s new postpaid plans and smartphone lineup. MobileSyrup heard the launch had been pushed back to today, but is now reporting the MVNO is delaying it further. A few more details of what the Canadian carrier is expected to offer when it eventually follows through have emerged, however, including the all-important price points. Three contract tiers will be available, costing $35, $50 or $65 per month, with the number of any-use minutes and data allowance increasing with the spend. You’ll also be able to purchase “stacks” that give you extra chatter time or megabytes for the month. Full details of the plans are available at the source link, but exactly when PC Mobile will begin promoting them alongside a refreshed handset selection is still anyone’s guess.

HTC One coming to C Spire

HTC One coming to C Spire, eventually

While Samsung has launched the Galaxy S 4 through just about every US carrier under the sun, HTC has largely kept the One to the very largest American networks. That should change soon: C Spire has confirmed that it will carry the aluminum flagship, albeit only at a vague point in the “near future.” That’s a horrible tease, we know, although it’s good news for those who don’t want to give up a regional provider just to get a premium device.

Telus drops its attempt to acquire Mobilicity

Mobilicity store

Telus’ bid to acquire Mobilicity was primarily a play for more spectrum, and the Canadian government’s obligation to block the related frequency deal largely killed the merger’s reason for being. However, the carrier isn’t fighting that fatal setback to the bitter end, AT&T-style — instead, it’s backing out entirely. That’s undoubtedly a relief for Canucks wanting a competitive cellular marketplace, although we wouldn’t cheer too loudly. Mobilicity was partly hoping the deal would eliminate its financial woes, and it now has to fend for itself once again. There’s also no guarantee that we’ll avoid an eventual repeat: it could be open season on Mobilicity when there’s no longer a moratorium on spectrum transfers.

AT&T follows Verizon’s footsteps, upgrade policy pushed to 24 months

After Verizon changed its upgrade policy back in April — bumping it up to 24 months from 20 months — AT&T has decided to do the same. However, those with contracts that end prior to next March will still be able to upgrade at the 20-month mark, but for those whose contracts end in March
