Telsa announcement to both “up the ante” and “fix mistakes”

In what is now the third time in a month that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has shouted out about an upcoming announcement with Tesla Motors, he took to Twitter again today to say that the car company will be making an announcement tomorrow that will supposedly “up the ante” as well as “fix some mistakes.”

tesla-model-s-580x41611

Of course, we’re left with very little details, which means we can only speculate on what Musk and company will be unveiling tomorrow. However, in a reply on Twitter, Musk elaborated slightly on what the announcement would cover, and he says that tomorrow’s announcement will be “about getting a prior announcement right.”

This means that it involves either Tesla’s new financing option or their new warranty system. However, based on these two options, tomorrow’s announcement will most likely have something to do with the company’s new financing scheme, which seemed a little off in the first place. This new financing option would allow customers to own a new Model S for just $500 per month.

We’re guessing that Musk will clarify any confusion with this new financing plan. We’re not exactly sure if he’ll change the financing option altogether, or if he’ll simply explain himself better and say, “yup, you can own a Tesla for just $500 per month.” Considering how expensive Tesla cars are, though, we’re guessing it would take years and years to pay off the car with only $500 payments.

Corvette C7 ups C6 weight by 90 pounds: technology not feather light

This week the difference between generations in the Chevrolet Corvette have come down to the overall weight of the vehicles. In the 2014 Corvette Stingray, aka the Corvette C7, we’ve had our own up close and personal look and run-down of the vehicle straight from Chevrolet, complete with assurances that the interior of this vehicle has been given special care this time around. With the transition in parts and style, has Chevrolet made the C7 too heavy?

IMAG0680-2014-Corvette-Stingray

Additions like the Infotainment system in this year’s Corvette add a significant amount of weight – at 31.5 pounds on its own, this system weighs more than any other single totally new element in the vehicle. According to GM Authority, a list of items from bigger breaks to new structural safety requirements add their own bulk to the system. New seats come in at 17.2 pounds, a larger fuel tank adds 3 pounds, reinforced differential and half shafts at 18.5 pounds, and together a 35.2 pound addition is included in Active Fuel Management (AFM), variable valve timing, and direct injection.

The total estimated weight of the Corvette C7 coup without the Z51 package was confirmed this week by Chevrolet to be 3,298 pounds (1,496 kg), that is 90 pounds (41 kg) heavier than the standard 2013 Corvette C6 coupe’s curb weight. Weight additions in the Z51 performance package are not yet confirmed, but have been estimated at between 150 and 200 pounds on top of it all.

According to Chevrolet, the weight is not going to bring you down. On the contrary, they’ve made it clear that this model will be more capable and handle better than any model in the past, and they’ve made every effort to emphasize the luxury points throughout the vehicle since it was first revealed.

Toyota 2015 fuel-cell car gets ambitious price as eco-tech matures

Toyota has announced that it plans to launch a fuel cell powered vehicle in 2015. Research in the fuel-cell vehicles has been going on for years for many of the major automotive manufacturers. However, the technology faced some serious challenges before it was ready to come to market. Fuel-cell powered vehicles use hydrogen as fuel.

tfc

The good thing about using hydrogen is that when it’s burned it produces no pollutants. The downside to hydrogen is that it’s a volatile fuel requiring specialized storage and there is no hydrogen refueling infrastructure in place in much of the nation. One of the biggest drawbacks to early fuel-cell powered vehicles will be the price.

Toyota had previously said that prototype fuel-cell vehicles cost about $1 million each to produce when they were developed about a year ago. The cost to produce the fuel cell vehicles coming in 2015 is predicted to be around $50,000. That would mean buyers can expect to see sticker prices of under $100,000.

Currently Toyota is planning to sell its new fuel-cell vehicle starting in 2015 in states covered by the California Air Resources Board mandate. The production vehicle is expected to be sized similarly to the Prius and Toyota’s FCV-R concept car unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo auto show. Toyota executives predict that even with the company only selling its fuel-cell vehicle in California and New York it should be able to sell 11,000 units nationwide, which is how many units the company sold of its Prius when it launched in 2000.

Nissan reveals 2014 GT-R Track Edition pricing

Back on February 8, we reported that Nissan had unveiled the 2014 GT-R Track Edition, a limited-production racer that, at the time, was without a price tag. Fast forward a couple months and Nissan has announced the pricing for the GT-R Track Edition, which is set at $115,710, making it an option only for racing enthusiasts with deep pockets.

GTR Track

Says Nissan, the 2014 GT-R Track Edition is meant to take the popular GT-R car up a notch, heading towards the realm of competition racers. To facilitate the differences, the Track Edition features things like specialized brake cooling guides, carbon fiber air ducts, and – instead of normal backseats – a quilted cloth. Other cars in the GT-R family include the GT-R Black and the GT-R Premium.

Both of those GT-R models are cheaper than the Track Edition model, with the Black being priced at $109,300 and the Premium being priced at $99,590. The Track Edition in particular will have a very limited production of 150 vehicles, which are already on sale at select Nissan GT-R dealers across the United States. Both the Black and Premium editions are also available.

Unlike the other GT-R models, the Track Edition features Bilstein DampTronic gas-pressure shock absorbers and high spring rates, giving it an updated suspension system. Nissan says that the Nurburgring was heavily used in the suspension’s development, putting it through testing and aiding with benchmarks. The front seats are high-grip, the tires are nitrogen-filled, and the rear spoiler is handmade from carbon fiber.

Aston Martin Rapide S first hydrogen car to race around Nürburgring

Last month we discussed Aston Martin’s newest project, a hydrogen-equipped hybrid version of its Rapide S sports car. It’s going to make its official racing debut later this month during the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring, but the car already ended up making history as being the first-ever hydrogen-powered car to take a lap around the historic track.

rapide-s-hybrid-hydrogen

The car raced around the roughly 15-mile Nordschleife circuit in Germany for about four hours, but the company didn’t reveal lap times unfortunately. However, we’re guessing the car is able to go pretty fast, especially if Aston Martin is confident enough to enter it into the 24-hour race later this month.

The car is powered by a prototype twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine that’s capable of running on hydrogen, gasoline, or a combination of the two, allowing it to go the extra distance on zero emissions. This is the same engine that will be in the production Rapide S that will hit show floors in the next few weeks, but without the hydrogen hybrid feature of course.

While the test laps are impressive, the real test for the hydrogen-powered car will be racing a non-stop 24 hours come May 19-20. Nobody’s really sure how the car will hold up for a straight 24 hours, but if the hydrogen portion of the car does end up failing at some point, at least there’s the gasoline portion that will keep on chugging along.

Prominent car dealer supports Tesla sales in Texas

While Tesla has several car dealerships located around the US, some states still aren’t letting the company in (including Texas and Virginia) since they require that cars be sold through a middle man, and without the middle man, car dealers wouldn’t make any money. However, a prominent car dealership in Houston is speaking up by saying that the ban on Tesla should be lifted in the state.

tesla_model_s1-580x386

A long time ago, car dealers ended up getting their state lawmakers to pass legislation that would ban the direct sale of cars straight from the manufacturer. This was a precaution to prevent auto makers from undercutting the car dealers. However, Sterling McCall, who is a popular retired car dealer based in Houston, says that this kind of ban is hogwash.

McCall says that “we ought to welcome competition — and the innovation — that Tesla brings, just as dealerships already compete to sell more gas-powered, hybrid and natural gas vehicles from the country’s larger manufacturers.” McCall continues by saying that this is essentially something that the public wants.

However, it’ll be a hard fight Musk and company, as Tesla was recently denied a dealer license in Virginia for the same reasons that they can’t sell cars in Texas. Musk is currently urging lawmakers to introduce a new bill that would either reverse the ban, or simply allow direct sales in these states.

Driving Miss dAIsy: What Google’s self-driving cars see on the road

We’ve been hearing a lot about Google‘s self-driving car lately, and we’re all probably wanting to know how exactly the search giant is able to construct such a thing and drive itself without hitting anything or anyone. A new photo has surfaced that demonstrates what Google’s self-driving vehicles see while they’re out on the town, and it looks rather frightening.

google-car

The image was tweeted by Idealab founder Bill Gross, along with a claim that the self-driving car collects almost 1GB of data every second (yes, every second). This data includes imagery of the cars surroundings in order to effectively and safely navigate roads. The image shows that the car sees its surroundings through an infrared-like camera sensor, and it even can pick out people walking on the sidewalk.

Of course, 1GB of data every second isn’t too surprising when you consider that the car has to get a 360-degree image of its surroundings at all times. The image we see above even distinguishes different objects by color and shape. For instance, pedestrians are in bright green, cars are shaped like boxes, and the road is in dark blue.

However, we’re not sure where this photo came from, so it could simply be a rendering of someone’s idea of what Google’s self-driving car sees. Either way, Google says that we could see self-driving cars make their way to public roads in the next five years or so, which actually isn’t that far off, and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is even interested in developing self-driving cars as well. However, they certainly don’t come without their problems, and we’re guessing that the first batch of self-driving cars probably won’t be in 100% tip-top shape.

Apple looks to boost in-car integration with iOS 7

We’ll most likely hear about iOS 7 at some point this year, possibly at WWDC in June, but in the meantime we’re left to speculate on what we could see in the new update. However, it’s reported that iOS 7 will focus more on in-car integration with Apple Maps and Siri. The company is said to be improving in that section of iOS in order to deliver their technology to more cars.

PB279605-siri-sonic--580x326

According to 9to5Mac, several sources “familiar with the initiative” say that Apple is in talks with multiple auto makers to bring iOS integration to more cars once iOS 7 hits the mainstream. It’s said that Apple is trying to get auto makers to add native iOS integration to infotainment systems in more vehicles in time for the launch of iOS 7.

It’s not exactly certain as to how Apple wants its products to be integrated into cars, but one possibility is that users can plug in their iPhones into the infotainment system and have a redesigned version of Apple Maps show up on the infotainment display, instead of using the iPhone’s smaller screen.

Siri would also be another feature that Apple is trying to get inside of more cars. It would be similar to what Ford and Chevrolet offer, which we took a look at both recently. Chevrolet is putting Siri integration into the new Sonic, and Ford has its SYNC program, which we also took a look at during CES back in January.

ZR1-spec Corvette C7 could revive LT5 name for 700HP monster

Chevrolet could be planning a painfully potent version of the 2014 Corvette C7, it’s claimed, packing a supercharged version of the new car’s 6.2-liter engine and splashing out a heady 700 HP. The worked-over musclecar, tipped to be branded as the Corvette ZR1, though may not hit showrooms until at least early 2014 so as to avoid cutting into “base” C7 sales.

2014_corvette_c7_stingray

It’s under the hood that things could be expected to get exciting, of course, and that’s where a clutch of new trademarks – believed to be connected to engine variants – come in. Most interesting is the LT5, spotted by GM Authority, which is rumored to be a supercharged LT1 V8.

That would hark back to the original LT5 engine, which GM used to good effect in the Corvette ZR1 C4 of the early 1990s. At the time, GM looked to Lotus for help tuning the original LT5, though the company is expected to take the reins itself for coaxing extra power out of the new variant.

Reports from mid-February were already claiming that the Corvette Stingray C7 shown off in January for the first time would not be the most potent iteration of the car. Work is already afoot, Motor Trend claimed, on the Z06 and ZR1 engines, even if the cars they’d power were at least a year out.

Before then, of course, the Corvette C7 – which itself musters almost 450 HP from its small-block V8 – will arrive on forecourts, with Chevrolet only just announcing pricing for the car. Deliveries should begin in Q3 2013.

2014 Corvette C7 set to be Indy 500 pace car

The Indianapolis 500 will be taking place later next month, and it’s known as “the greatest spectacle in racing” and one of the biggest racing events in the world, right up there with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The pace car that will lead the pack to the green flag will be Chevrolet’s all-new 2014 Corvette C7 (a.k.a. the Corvette Stingray).

corvette

Of course, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise if you’ve been following the Indy 500 the past few years. The race has used a Corvette as the pace car every year for the past 10 years or so, but this will be the first year that the Indy 500 will be using a brand spankin’ new 2014 Corvette C7.

The photo below is a spy shot of the pace car that will be used in the race next month. Obviously, it’s nothing too special, save for the blue and white paint scheme and the strobes plastered all over the car. We’re guessing that the car will eventually be suited with Indy 500 decals on the sides to make it look more official, but in the meantime, the car sports a rather plain look.

Screen Shot 2013-04-29 at 2.16.23 PM

We took a look at the new Corvette last month at the New York Auto Show, where we also got to chat with the chief engineer behind the new car, as well as get a look at the interior since the outside of the car is only half the story. If you’re curious about learning more on the 2014 Corvette C7, we highly suggest you check out our in-depth look at the car.
