iBeetle revealed: real iPhone-friendly vehicle set for 2014

Today the Volkwagen iBeetle has been announced – and it’s not just a concept car. This very real, very ready for the market vehicle has been unleashed at the Shanghai auto show with full iPhone 5 integration. But it’s not coming with an iPhone out of the box – you have to buy that separately.

sadfads

In an effort to engage the younger generation once more, Volkswagen’s new “iBeetle” will be working with a phone dock that appears above the dash, ready for your next-generation iPhone. And just incase you were wondering – yes, Apple is in on the release.

With the iBeetle you’ll be seeing Apple releasing some car apps created specifically for the vehicle. Extra instrumentation viewing and control, connections wirelessly for both control and sound, and a new app that sends “digital postcards” of your location based on GPS information. Unlike many other in-car infotainment systems we’ve been seeing of late, this system is wholly dependent on the iPhone.

ibeetleiphone-4_3_r536_c534

This system is said to be working in the near future with a set of Apple-made (in collaboration with VW) applications that are as follows:

• Live reading of social networking messages (likely Siri-related)
• Car data readouts for g-force, oil temperature, coolant temperature, compass, timer
• Data for time, distance, fuel in relation to one-another
• Instant photo transmission when app is activated
• Spotify – it’s unclear at the moment how this differs from the basic Spotify app

This vehicle will very likely change the way we see the car industry as far as how important a specific smartphone or tablet is to the vehicles being produced. Never before has a manufacturer placed such specific reliance on a single device before! At least in the past, they didn’t name the car after the smartphone, that’s for sure!

Northrop Grumman unveils latest generation of its CUTLASS unmanned ground vehicle

Northrop Grumman is one of the largest defense contractors in the United States and the company works on a wide variety of projects for the US military. Many those projects have to do with aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles, but some of the projects aren’t designed to fly. Northrop Grumman has announced the launch of its latest generation CUTLASS unmanned ground vehicle.

cutlass

The ground vehicle is specifically designed for remote handling and surveillance of hazardous threats. Northrop says that the vehicle uses a modular design to allow the end-user to deal safely with a range of hazardous threats from a distance. The vehicle can be used for detecting and disposing of explosive ordinance among other tasks.

The design allows the vehicle to accommodate a wide range of payloads, sensors, and tools. Northrop says that the CUTLASS’ ability to accommodate a wide range of payloads means that users don’t have to deploy two standard unmanned vehicles. The main tool for the CUTLASS is a three-fingered gripper arm with nine-degrees of freedom.

The mine-degrees of freedom gives the robotic arm greater movement capability and agility allowing it to move inside limited spaces. The arm also has specialized sensing systems allowing for a high level of dexterity and minimizes damage to property. The high level of dexterity for the arm also allows for the preserving of forensic evidence. The vehicle is able to reach speeds of up to 12 kph and features a six-wheel design allowing for mobility on all sorts of terrain and in all sorts of weather conditions.

Chevrolet’s 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel trumps non-hybrid vehicles with 46MPG

Chevrolet‘s 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel car has beat out all non-hybrid passenger cars in the United States in highway gas mileage, coming in at 46MGP. Such a mileage rating offers drivers approximately 700 miles on the highway per tank, basing it on the EPA’s highway estimate and, obviously, the gas tank’s capacity. Chevrolet boasts the vehicle over its competitors, saying the Cruze Clean Turbo beats out the VW Jetta TDI auto in multiple categories.

Turbo Cruze

Says Chevrolet, the Cruze Diesel beats out the Jetta TDI automatic in several ways, including with its standard MyLink infotainment system, leather seats, better powertrain limited warranty, maintenance plan, and larger wheels, which measure in at 17-inches. The Cruze Diesel offers 258 lb-ft and a 148 horsepower 2.0L turbo diesel engine, as well as a 0 to 60mph in 8.6-seconds.

According to the announcement, this engine is General Motor’s cleanest passenger car diesel motor, featuring a 90-percent reduction in Nitrogen Oxide and particulate emissions over older diesel engines. Of the 2 million Cruze vehicles sold across the world, Chevrolet says that 33,000 of them were of the diesel variety.

The Chevrolet Cruze Diesel’s Chief Engineer Gary Altman had this to say: “We harnessed generations of diesel expertise to adapt our world-class global engine for the North American market. The Cruze Diesel is the best diesel passenger car out there. Chevrolet is redefining the meaning of great fuel economy with this car.” Price starts at $25,695.

Honda recalls 204,500 vehicles over potential shifting problem

Honda has announced plans to recall 204,500 of its CR-V, Odyssey, and Acura RDX vehicles from 2012 and 2013 due to an issue with the braking system. When temperatures drop below freezing, a problem with one component could allow the driver to shift without pressing the brake first, something that hasn’t caused any issues, instead being discovered in an internal investigation.

Honda Odyssey

The numbers break down to 59,000 2012 and 2013 Honda Odyssey minivans, 128,000 2012 and 2013 Honda CR-V SUVs, and 17,500 2013 Acura RDX vehicles. Those with an affected vehicle will have a component in the brake shift interlock system replaced with one that isn’t prone to failure in sub-freezing temperatures. According to Honda, no customers have complained or experiened any injuries from the problem.

Snail-mail notifications will go out to those with one of the affected vehicles some time in the middle of May. Once the notifications begin rolling out, customers will also be able to check if they have one of the models by visiting the respective Honda and Acura “Recalls” website (recalls.honda.com and recalls.acura.com) or by calling the customer hotline and pressing “4″.

This follows a recent recall over faulty airbags by the manufacturer, with the airbags coming from Takata Corporation. The airbags were made from 2000 to 2002, and concerned a problem with the inflators that could cause abnormal inflation when deployed. Toyota and Nissan were also forced to issue recalls over the same airbag problems.

Mercedes-Benz GLA concept sports laser video projector headlights

Mercedes-Benz likes to keep this high-tech and modern with their vehicles, so naturally it makes sense that the company’s latest concept — the GLA — has laser projection headlights capable of beaming videos. The CUV is set to make an appearance at the Shanghai Motor Show next week, but it seems the company wanted to tease it first before its official unveiling.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Showcar; 2013

The laser projection headlights are something of amazement it seems, and thanks to some pretty nifty technology that’s built right into the headlights, drivers can project any image or video onto a screen. The images or video can come from a phone, tablet, flash drive, or even the internet using the GLA’s in-dash COMAND system.

However, Mercedes didn’t add projection to the GLA just for kicks and giggles — there is a logical purpose behind this, and the company says the projection system can be used as a real-time GPS navigation overlay.  It’s certainly something different then just looking at a small GPS screen during the whole trip.

The headlights feature a cooling system composed of a series of fans, so you won’t have to worry about the inevitable overheating of most projectors. Plus, there’s even a pair of HD video cameras mounted to the roof of the vehicle, and they’re detachable so you can take them with you when you’re not driving around. As for the engine specs, you’re looking at a turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder motor pushing out 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Ford launches 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine

Ford continues to add new fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines to power a variety of vehicles in its global vehicle lineup. Ford recently announced a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine that will join its lineup of fuel-efficient turbocharged engines. Ford says the new engine will help to meet the strong global demand for four-cylinder EcoBoost powertrains.

ecoboost1-5

Ford now has the capacity to build 1.6 million EcoBoost engines annually with the addition of the new 1.5-liter model. By the end of 2013, Ford will have six plants across Europe, Asia, and North America producing EcoBoost engines. That is three times as many facilities producing these engines as Ford had in 2010.

The 1.5-liter engine is the fifth member of the EcoBoost family and will be produced initially at Ford’s facility in Craiova, Romania. Mass production of the new engine will begin later this month and Ford says that other manufacturing locations for the engine will be announced in the future. The first vehicle to get the new 1.5-liter engine will be the Ford Mondeo that will debut in China later this month at Auto Shanghai 2013.

The 1.5-liter engine will also find its way under the hood of the Fusion sedan in North America and the new Mondeo in Europe a later date. The engine uses an aluminum block and has twin-cams. It also features the integrated exhaust manifold introduced on the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Ford says that the 1.5-liter EcoBoost will deliver similar horsepower and torque compared to its current 1.6-liter EcoBoost.

Ford builds the one millionth Mustang

Of all the automobiles that Ford builds, one of the most iconic is the Mustang. This week the Ford Mustang celebrated its 49th birthday and on Wednesday the one millionth Mustang rolled off the assembly line. If you’re curious, that millionth Mustang appears to be a convertible ruby red GT with the Track Pack designed for high-performance driving.

KGT_5115e

The one millionth Mustang was constructed Wednesday at Ford’s Flat Rock. The same plant will also build the Fusion beginning in late August. The Ford Mustang was first introduced as a 1964 1/2 model 49 years ago. Mustangs have been produced in Flat Rock since 2004. Before assembly began at the Flat Rock plant, America’s first pony car was built at the Rouge plant in Dearborn.

While the one millionth Mustang is a significant milestone for Ford, the automaker and fans of the Mustang are really looking forward to next year. To celebrate the 50th birthday of the quintessential American pony car, Ford will be rolling out a completely new Mustang. When that new Mustang will launch remains unclear.

The Ford Mustang is the only American pony car that’s been in continuous production. Competing products such as the Camaro, Challenger, and Charger have all been discontinued at one point or another. The plant manufactures the Mustang, will begin manufacturing the Fusion, and has the flexibility to build up to six models. Ford says that the plant output will be adjusted to produce a mix of Mustangs and fusions depending on customer demand.

Mercedes-Benz GLA compact crossover concept leaked ahead of Auto China 2013

We’re three days away from China’s Auto China 2013 car show to be held in Shanghai this weekend, but that didn’t stop someone from leaking a roster full of images across the Internet. Over a dozen photos of Mercedes-Benz‘s GLA compact crossover concept vehicle have hit the Web showing off the car from nearly every angle. And while the SUV itself is a sight to behold, it is the interior shots that are truly outstanding.

2

According to Carscoop, this crossover concept is similar the vehicle itself, which Mercedes-Benz won’t be unveiling until the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. If you like what you see and you have the funds, you’ll be able to nab the car next year when it goes on sale globally by mid-2014. Price and exact release date are yet still unknown.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine offering 208 horsepower, the same found in the A-Class A250. The 7G-DCT transmission is a seven-speed dual clutch accompanied by a 4MATIC AWD feature. There’s said to be other engine options as well, with this being the base offering. Moving along is the interior, which is more than eye-catching and featured in the gallery below.

The interior is a smorgasbord of familiar components from the A-Class, with leather seats and what appears to be leather trim throughout the console and dashboard. Blue LED accent lights are featured in the concept images, as well as what appears to be a vertically-mounted display. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the official showing this weekend, and will update you then!

Dubai adds Ferrari FF to police fleet

Just days after adding a Lamborghini Aventador to their police car lineup, the city of Dubai has added yet another awesome sports car to its fleet of police vehicles. On top of the Aventador, the Ferrari FF is being added to the roster as well. While it’s only a three-door shooting-brake, it can still haul up to two bad guys off to jail.

ferrari-ff

While the Ferrari FF may not look all that sleek and exotic (it looks like a BMW M Coupe for crying out loud), it still packs in that luxurious sports car feel, and they sell for around $300,000 a piece. It squeezes in a 6.3-liter V12 engine which produces 650 HP. It’s the largest capacity production engine that Ferrari has ever produced.

Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim, who is the Dubai Police Chief, said that Dubai is a unique city, and because of that, everything in the city should be unique. Apparently, that was reason enough for Dubai to add a Ferrari to their police force. Tamim wanted to confirm that Dubai is magnificent and extravagant in all the services it provides.

Of course, we can’t blame them for wanting to spice up their police force in order to be unique. Dubai is a pretty unique city where the buildings practically scream “money” at you while you’re driving down the road. Long story short: Don’t expect to outrun the Dubai Police in whatever piece of crap you’ll be driving at the time.

BlackBerry’s QNX Inks Deal With 7digital For In-Car Music Service, Gears Up For Automotive Rivalry With Apple

qnx

BlackBerry has been hit hard by Apple and Android in the enterprise smartphone market, and now it’s making some moves to make sure that it doesn’t face the same fate in the automotive segment. QNX, BlackBerry’s operating system subsidiary that makes the new BB10 operating system, today announced that it would be adding music streaming service 7digital into its in-car entertainment and information system, QNX CAR.

The deal gives QNX more leverage against Google and its own car ambitions, as well as Apple, which has made some moves into the automotive segment, and is the world’s biggest seller of digital music today. The QNX deal will see access to 7digital’s catalog of 23 million tracks, and HTML5-based music store, via the QNX system; the music service will work across the 40 countries where 7digital already has licensing agreements. It follows on the heels of QNX deals with other music providers including Pandora, Tune In, and Slacker.

(As a point of comparison on footprint, yesterday music streaming service Spotify added several new markets in Asia, Latin America and Europe to its global coverage, and now works in 28 countries.)

QNX says that this will in turn mean that automotive OEMs and others working on in-car systems can now build customized digital music stores into QNX-based “infotainment systems.” These will link up with 7digital’s wider service across mobile and web platforms so that subscribers can access their music on all of them.

The move is another sign of how everything, including cars, are fair hardware game today. “The lines between in-car systems, mobile devices, and the web are blurring,” said Derek Kuhn, vice president of sales and marketing at QNX Software Systems, in a statement. “Our partnership with 7digital is a testament to how well digital music services can be integrated into a seamless automotive user experience.”

At the same time, digital music specifically has a huge opportunity in the next generation of cars — something companies like Spotify and Apple are also considering as they also look to integrate with new platforms.

“Connected and mobile devices have changed the way music is consumed, but one thing that hasn’t is people’s desire to listen to music in the car,” said Ben Drury, CEO of 7digital. “We’re already working with partners in the automotive sector and now, for the first time, automotive companies using the QNX CAR platform can leverage our HTML5 music store, where their customers can access the largest collection of digital music from the convenience of their vehicles.”

For 7digital, this is another way of making sure its service remains relevant for its existing subscribers. It already has a strong relationship with BlackBerry; the service is preloaded on a range of the company’s smartphones, including the newest BB10 devices. The company, based in the UK, has raised $18.5 million to date, with its named investors including Sutton Place Managers and Balderton Capital. Its last round of funding, $10 million in October 2012, came from “two public technology companies.” I’ve reached out to 7digital to ask if BlackBerry happens to be one of them.

Samsung is another strong partner of 7digital; the streaming company powers the world’s biggest smartphone maker’s Music Hub music service. 7digital also works on Pioneer’s in-car system.

For its part, QNX, which was acquired by BlackBerry in 2010 as part of its bigger drive to update its mobile platform, has been an early and strong player in in-car systems for years already, and it works with companies like Audi, Toyota, BMW, Porsche, Honda and Land Rover.

Interestingly, it has something in common with BlackBerry in that both have reputations as workhorses. “The only way to make this software malfunction is to fire a bullet into the computer running it,” an automotive customer once said of QNX.

But as the mobile industry has shown us many times, it’s not always the early movers who are the long-term winners in this space.

While QNX has built a reputation with reliable in-car navigation and other legacy car-computer systems, in the new age of connected everything, the car could well become a hot battleground, like the smartphone is already, in the bigger war of ecosystems. QNX has been, like others, developing next-generation systems to meet that demand.

There are already companies working on ways of synchronizing the apps in one’s phone with those in the car, and companies like Apple and Google, as well as automotive companies themselves, all want a piece of the action. Cars and car news featured prominently at both the CES and MWC events earlier this year.

The bigger risk for BlackBerry is that QNX goes the way of its crown jewel, the BlackBerry smartphone, which was once the default smartphone — the only smartphone in many cases — used by enterprises. These days, it’s a different picture. IDC noted last November that iPhones are bing bought “in droves” instead of BlackBerry handsets. Some of this is down to individual users bringing in their own devices; and some is down to larger corporate contracts.
