Ariel Atom to get even lighter thanks to new titanium chassis

There are number of automobiles on the market constructed by very small boutique manufacturers. A number of these incredibly low production automobiles are constructed specifically with motorsports in mind. The vehicles are street legal, but are very minimalist and are designed for drivers who often spend a lot of time racing the cars on a road course.

airel-to-get-titanium-chassis-545x245

One of these vehicles is the Ariel Atom. This car is very minimalist and is typically built using lots of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and a tube-frame chassis. The vehicles have no doors and have no roof. The company has announced that it is making its already lightweight vehicle even lighter by using a new material for the chassis of the sports car.

Typically, the cars are made using a tubular steel frame and Ariel Motors is now working on a special edition of the Atom that we use a titanium chassis. The titanium chassis is said to be 40% lighter than the tubular steel frame Atom uses currently. The manufacturer says that the new frame will reduce the overall weight of the car by as much as 8%.

Ariel Motors is targeting a weight below 500 kg, which is about 1100 pounds in the US. If the company meets that target weight, that would make the special edition Ariel Atom weigh about half as much as a Mazda Miata. The special edition titanium frame Atom will use the naturally aspirated Honda engine featuring lightweight mechanical components. There is no word on pricing or availability for the titanium Atom at this time.

First images of 2014 Cadillac CTS leak

General Motors is set to unveil the new 2014 Cadillac CTS during the 2013 New York Auto Show. The New York Auto Show is the next major auto show to be held in the United States. We’ve known for a while that vehicle would make its official debut at the show and GM has already offered up information on its new V-6 engine that will find its weight under the hood.

However, one major detail we didn’t know about the new CTS was exactly what the vehicle will look like on the outside. Some official photographs of the 2014 Cadillac CTS have leaked online ahead of the car’s official launch in New York. The images show a distinctive front grill and a front bumper area that has a sporty look.

The images also show what appear to be LED daytime running lights, HID headlights, and LED fog lights. The rear of the car has a small deck lid spoiler, LED tail lights, and the familiar Cadillac crest. On the inside, the car is all-new using lots of leather, real wood trim, and Alcantara along with contrasting color stitching.

There will be multiple engines available in the new Cadillac, the most powerful being Cadillac’s new twin turbo V-6 engine. We previously talked about that new V-6 in depth and it will provide the new CTS with 420 hp and 430 pound-feet of torque. Cadillac says that the CTS fitted with this engine will be able to reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and have a top speed of 170 mph. I’d wager that engine will be available in the CTS V performance version only.

HondaLink telematics system promises interesting features for smartphones

Honda has announced a partnership with two other companies to develop the HondaLink telematics service. The other two companies include design firm frog and DENTSU Inc. The telematics service allows drivers to establish new forms of communication and companionship with their vehicles. The system uses apps that will be available for the iPhone and Android devices.

figure_section6

Features of the HondaLink system include advanced GPS navigation with the ability to predict traffic conditions. The system also has a dashboard featuring infographics and data visualizations allowing drivers to check fuel efficiency. The system also sends the driver or alerts and messages delivered in the form of conversations with emoticons.

These messages are delivered like conversations complete with smileys is an attempt by Honda to create a human-like connection between the driver and the vehicle. The app can also be customized to give the vehicle its own name and users can customize the color of the app. One of the key functionalities in the app is to help the driver keep up with routine maintenance.

The app is also able to keep the timeline of travels for a vehicle including places visited, when the tank was filled up, odometer updates, and other tidbits. Drivers can also get full navigation within the app for the vehicle. Honda’s app also has a built-in function to send the driver coupons for service and other offers from their local dealership. The apps are expected to launch this month and will hit Thailand first.

Corvette Racing’s rear radar system demoed in video

Pratt & Miller has created a rear-facing radar that can track approaching cars, with the information gathered being offered to the driver via a display. The system was shown off at 12 Hours of Sebring, and is said to be the only currently available of its kind. You can check out a video of the intriguing radar after the jump.

radar

Corvette Racing’s radar system is similar to the camera systems used to provide visibility in blind spots, but with a sophisticated vehicle tracking feature that can provide racers with information that could be difficult to get otherwise, such as during the night time. Check out the video below to see it in action.

Pratt & Miller embeddded systems engineer Chris Hammond said, “The system uses a rear-facing radar sensor to track up to 32 objects, and runs on a custom-built Linux PC with a Core i3 CPU. With a momentary glance the driver knows how many cars are following, how far back each one is, their closing speeds, and whether or not they are probably a faster class.”

The radar works something like this: The camera keeps an eye on the vehicles nearby, and whether it is bright and sunny or dim and rainy (or after dark), the system will use symbols to indicate things about other racers. For example, a yellow symbol is used to identify vehicles that are going the same speed as the driver’s car, while a green symbol is used to show a car that is going slower and a red symbol to show cars that are going faster.

Honda recalls 93,000 Acura TSX sedans due to potential engine stalls

Honda has recalled about 93,000 of its Acura TSX vehicles due to a problem with its ECU (Electronic Control Unit) that could set of a series off problems culminating in engine stalling. Depending on when the engine stalls, the driver could potentially be at risk for crashing, resulting in injury. The information comes from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report.

800px-Acura-TSX

The process by which the engine may stall is a bit complicated. According to the NHTSA report, the vehicle’s driver could transfer a chemical found in de-icing products to the car’s carpet by walking on it. From there, the de-icing compound could then be transferred to the Electronic Control Unit where its case meets the carpet.

At this point, the chemical could then lead to corrosion, and the corrosion could cause a stall, with the engine stall potentially causing a crash. As a result, Honda elected to recall just under six figures worth of the Acura TSX model years 2004 through 2007. Of this number, approximately 76,000 are located in the United States, and the rest are located in Canada.

As you can imagine, however, those in some states aren’t likely to come in contact with a de-icing chemical, which is why the recall has been limited to certain states (all of which experience icy winters): Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Owners will be notified next month.

Hyundai to reveal HND-9 concept at Seoul Motor Show

The Seoul Motor Show is coming up next week, and there will obviously be a handful of new cars to be unveiled on the show floor during the week, one of which will be Hyundai‘s HND-9 coupe concept. It’s said that the design of the concept will be meant as inspiration for Hyundai’s upcoming vehicles — possibly a next-generation Genesis.

Screen Shot 2013-03-21 at 11.34.15 AM

Hyundai says that this design of the HND-9 is described as a “modern reinterpretation of the classic premium sports coupe,” and we’d have to agree with them. The concept has the classic Lambo-style doors, as well as the fastback-esque rear design, with the dual exhaust on the back, along with the mean-looking taillights.

Screen Shot 2013-03-21 at 11.34.30 AM

The concept that will be making an appearance at the Seoul Motor Show will sport a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 GDI engine that spits out 365 BHP, and it’ll be accompanied by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Of course, this may not be the exact setup that will come to production vehicles in the future, but it could be template.

We’ve already seen a couple of Hyundai’s concepts over the last few months. The company showed off their HCD-14 sedan concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit back in January, as well as their Veloster C3 hatchback concept back in November, both of which look really sleek.

GM recalls 33,700 cars over gearbox glitch danger

A fault which could see Buick and Cadillac cars switch unexpectedly to Sport transmission mode has forced General Motors to recall almost 34,000 sedans and crossovers, the automaker has revealed. The software glitch, affecting the 2013 Buick LaCrosse and 2013 Cadillac SRX, will inconvenience drivers in the US, Canada, Mexico, China, and the Middle East, and require a swift reprogramming in order to fix it.

cadillac_srx_2013

That attention will require a trip back to the dealership, and can’t be done remotely. General Motors says that 26,582 of the impacted cars are located in the US, though insists that it’s yet to hear of an injury or a crash caused by the problem.

Exactly what the cause of the software issue is, GM hasn’t said, only that it identified the fault while testing a 2014 engineering model. However, the end-result is clear: during driving, the auto gearbox can unexpectedly flick over from manual mode and into Sport mode, something which could increase the risk of a crash.

That’s because Sport mode has the side effect of “removing any transmission-related engine braking effect” GM explains [pdf link], so that taking your foot off the gas doesn’t allow the car to naturally slow itself. General Motors expects to kick off the recall on March 28, and owners of affected vehicles should speak to their local dealership to arrange a fix. There’s more information
